Digging up a pool that's been filled in??

We know that the home we're in now used to have a pool in the backyard. One of the previous owners filled it in. We're thinking that sometime either this year or next, we'd like to have a pool built. Does anyone have any idea what this would involve? Would it be the same as just digging up for a new pool or would they have to put the pool in the exact same spot? I'm sure it wouldn't be where or how we would want it now. Has anyone had this issue? Thanks.

Go to the city and look up the plans and find out where the pool is suppose to be and if you like the shape and placement. They should have filed plans and permits if this is recent history. They you will be better able to decide.

I don't think it has to be in the same spot. However, the pool company, I would think, would likely want to charge you more to demolish parts of that old pool that end up being in the way of your new one. The more they have to crack and haul away, the more they charge. I would be upfront with them and make sure its included as a part of your PB contract no matter what they find.

Can you tell me where I would to to look up this information? I'm not sure where to start?

Let's say it IS in a good spot and we can keep it where it is...would they not need to tear it up? I mean it can't be in good condition, right?? Obviously, I'm new at this! Thanks so much for your help and advice!

If your tulips are diseased you need to find out why. There are tulip disease which will persist and planting more is just throwing good money after bad. The symptom of distorted petals is typically down to poor bulb treatment the previous summer, possibly poor conditions over the winter, and occasionally insect damage. Diseases, other than tulip breaking virus, tends to affect the leaves quite badly. Lifting tulip bulbs over the summer is indeed a good thing to do if your climate and suitable are not ideal. Tulip bulbs in heavy soils can receive too much water over the summer which will cause them to be weak the following year. Or they may split excessively and never become large enough to flower. Hot humid climates seem to cause the same problems. You might want to leave some in the ground and lift others, just to see how well they do in your garden. If you are going to dig them at all then dig them now, or as soon as the leaves go yellow, and store them cool and dry over the summer. Replant them in November, or maybe October, once the soil has cooled down but before it freezes solid. You can plant annuals in the same area but it isn't ideal for the tulips. Some people deliberately overplant to hide the dying foliage. This is bad because the foliage needs maximum sunlight to recharge for next year. Beds with annuals also tend to get watered quite a lot over the summer, again not good for the tulips. These are two of the reasons why tulips often repeat poorly. If you are going to leave the bulbs in the ground and overplant, think about doing it fairly late to give the leaves as much sun as possible, and think about using plants that don't need extra water and fertiliser, like Cosmos or Iceplants.

I can hear that you're very frustrated, but I don't understand why you want to take such drastic measures, lol. Though, I have thought about scrapping the whole thing from time to time. I'm a first time gardener. I have to tell you that we had snow on May first, lol, so it sounds like we have similar areas. If your squash are otherwise healthy, you shouldn't get flowers until now anyway. Spray the evil bugs off with your garden hose and then give em a real good spray with soapy water. I was a little freaked out over a few different kinds of good bugs in my garden (ex: pill bugs eat compost). Are your cucumbers small because they've just formed? Or do they need to be pollinated? If they're healthy, they'll just keep producing more cukes until a few get pollinated correctly and one grows to full ripeness. If you planted in mid-May, most tomato varieties won't be ready to produce yet, lol. I have two romas that are two feet tall. Every other plant is four feet tall or taller, but those romas I started a bit later (mid-May, btw) and haven't started their real growth yet. One of them has decided to keep up with the Joneses and is trying to produce, and that has it's own set of issues. Overall, if your leaves are green, you're doing just fine. Toss a bit of compost on those squash and get rid of those bugs. One word of caution is, if those little bugs you found are squash bugs, I understand they'll saw right through your stems, so you should take immediate, decisive action. Pool to Pond Conversion, fill pool with gravel?

I did this for a gunite pool awhile back. I felt the same way, 8' deep is a lot of water. I broke a 3' square hole in the deep end and another in the shallow end which is required by code in San Jose CA. I built a block wall to divide the pool in half. The shallow end as a pond and filled in the deep end, then a liner and pea gravel over the liner for plants. I broke down the pool edge with an 80lb electric jackhammer which I rented. The edge of a gunite pool is 12'x12' with lots of rebar. An 80lb jackhammer was barely large enough, took a long time. A larger jackhammer would have been better. To remove all that concrete, the fill needed and proper tamping, $8K sounds about right. I filled in with concrete from the edge and then sand from a sand blasting place which delivered for free. They have to land fill otherwise. It worked well enough. Filling in the pool with sand or gravel and then laying a liner is not a good idea. If/when water gets under the liner it has no place to go. If the gravel fills with water the liner will float up. Busting a hole in the bottom provides drainage. Another choice is to leave a gap between the pool and liner where you can install a length of 6" or better drain or PVC pipe down into the gravel. A pump can then be placed down inside the pipe to remove any accumulated water as needed. Just filling the pool with sand or gravel will indeed 'get gross'. But so what? Lots of things are gross. A natural pond bottom is going to be gross too by most people's standards. It's only gross if you have dig in it. If I did this again I would just use it as a 8-10' deep pond. It doesn't use any more water than a 3' deep pond with the same surface area as far as evaporation goes. It doesn't get dirtier. The water chemistry and temp will be more stable. It's just as easy to clean. Looking back I made a mistake filling in and doing all this craziness. The cost to fill with water vs to fill with gravel...way cheaper. Way easier. I would vacuum a couple of times a year. A ran the pool as an 8' deep pond for about 4-5 years before doing the conversion. A lot of leaves accumulated and big chunks of muck started breaking loose and floating around. That was gross.

Lily of the Valley, Mixed Dutch Irises, Mixed Freesia, Stargazer Lilies, Mixed Platycodons, Calla Lilies, Mixed Lilies, and Mixed Hostas. You have a mix of annual and perennial bulbs here. You don't have to dig anything up now. Let them grow. However, in the fall what you should leave in the ground to come up and flower next season are the perennials : Dutch irises, stargazer lilies, mixed lilies, platycodons, hostas. The freesias and the calla lilies are not going to stand the winter outside, so put them in pots and bring them inside.

The same place where you get the permit to build the pool. Just go online and look up your city government pages.

I don't know the answer of whether you can undig a pool shell and reuse it. I think it would have alot to do with how long its been down there, how old it is and what building standards it was built to. Concrete is pretty permanent and a pool filled with water or filled with sand I would think would be subject to a lot of the same forces of nature.

However, I think it might cost the same to undig one though as to build a new one...

However, you really are going to need to know exactly where it is in terms of building a new one....

Many pools are broken up before they are filled in. Something else to consider, and something which would make your excavation costs through the roof.

If it was broken up first, why would that make excavation costs more expensive? Wouldn't that be just like digging for a virgin pool? I guess I'm worried more about it being in the wrong spot more than anything else. I know the previous owners (right before us) extended a patio. It's concrete and nice. Then we had it covered. I'd hate for the patio to be covering the pool. If the pool is far enough out, then we're OK I suppose? But would I be able to tell if it was broken up??

Because there are likely huge chunks of concrete, rather than just digging up dirt. That means different equipment and more time = more money.

The codes vary widely on this. Some codes allow the pool to be abandoned in place and filled with dirt. Others require the pool to be broken up into pieces which can then be left as fill in the existing hole with select fill being placed over that. Still others require that the entire pool structure be broken up and removed. First I would try to contact the previous owners and find out what was done to the original pool. Then discuss your options with a pool builder. I would forget about trying to restore a pool that has been filled with dirt, there are too many unknowns in that scenario and I seriously doubt any PB would warrant it against leaks.
