Do you think a custom Bluestar would do it for me?
Comments (2)The Bluestar was my absolute first choice. I just LOVE those burners! However, I was scared away by the many posts that described the *tinkering* factor. I'm not a tinkerer...I don't DIY, am not interested in playing with gas levels and replacing ignitors and all the other little things that many Bluestar lovers don't mind at all. It's certainly worth it for some...it is an awesome cooking machine, but I knew it wouldn't work for me. Also, I've read over and over again that the doors get quite hot! I dont' have little ones anymore, but it could be an issue for you. I really wanted induction, but after my double ovens didn't fit, decided I needed a range and wasn't willing to spurge on the mysterious Diva induction range (that no one seems to have) and DH thinks it's hideous (but boy is it powerful...it's really my dream range). DH really wanted fire so after I gave up on induction and couldn't have the Bluestar it was all about form. That's how we ended up with the Lacanche. We've had a DCS for the past 12 yrs, all 4 burners are 15K btu's. I found this to be enough power for what I do (though they can't heat a pan as quickly or evenly as induction). I don't think 12K would be enough. Have you looked at the Five Star range, comes in black, can get brass trim, highest burner is 18.5K btus. It looks pretty nice but has 6 burners, not 5....See MoreWhat do/did you look for in a custom cabinet shop?
Comments (14)My requirements are that: 1. PEOPLE HAVE INTEGRITY, ARE TRUTHFUL, AND USE QUALITY MATERIALS 2. PRICE & PRICING FORMULA IS FAIR FOR ALL CUSTOMERS: pricing cabinets should be fair and not be reduced to a subjective formula, i.e., "10% the value of your home" or such nonsense. This is criminal in my book. It's not "what the market can bear" pricing that is fair. I TRULY BELIEVE THAT IS CABINET MAKERS PRICED CABINETS MORE FAIRLY THAN THEY DO NOW SO THAT THE AVERAGE HOME OWNER COULD "DO THE MATH" AND KNOW WHAT "X" CABINET WOULD COST TO BUY OR HAVE INSTALLED, THEN MORE KITCHENS WOULD BE REDONE. There would be so much business that you could not keep up. But no, NOT ONE CUSTOM CABINET/ OR SMALLER SHOP I WENT TO PRICED FAIRLY. ALL PRICING WAS SUBJECTIVE AND CONVOLUTED. THEY WERE SIZING UP MY BANK ACCOUNT BASED ON HOW LARGE OF A HOME I HAVE. 3. TALENT & PRIDE = QUALITY PRODUCT 4. SERVICE In a nutshell, I, too, went with the guy that had been in business for a long time and had a HUGE portfolio. He was not organized with that portfolio and I even offered to organize his thousands of photos and put them online! THIS is how impressed I was about his work. Furthermore, my bro is a builder and cousin is a builder here in Jax and used this guy's shop before. MY SISTER's kitchen was done by this guy two years earlier. I was very confident with his talent. I'll bet I went to his shop over half a dozen times just to see his work because they made FURNITURE, these HUGE phenomenal stained glass windows for a church in D.C., pulpits, GORGEOUS entertainment systems, etc. This guy's bread and butter works were affordable, custom cabinets with beautiful paint techniques. His work was like buying Tommy Bahamas cabinets by Lexington for half price. THAT being said, when I hired him, I had my ducks in a row and contract very detailed. I'm not a kid, nor am inexperienced in business. I KNOW WHAT I'M DOING. MY KITCHEN WAS DESIGNED AND NOT COMPLICATED. My problems stemmed because he just flat out lost his talent; over 80% of his workers had QUIT and he did not tell me. He later told me he had spent my $10K he had for work so far and he was left to do my kitchen himself. And it was a crap shoot! He didn't do ONE, SINGLE CABINET CORRECTLY. NOT ONE. AND HE LIED CONSTANTLY. He mis-measured, no appliances fit, installed shoddy and unleveled, mis-ordered the door profile, and made me madder than I have EVER been in my 49 years of living. I HAVE NEVER, EVER DEALT WITH SUCH A NICE, BELIEVABLE LIAR. I trusted him and he $crewed us. We have had to have 30+ doors reordered because of all of the mis-measurements, etc. I am almost three years into this fiasco and got motivated to get back to it. I went to install two drawer fronts last month and they were 1" too short. I'm going to have to reorder two drawers more. It's like a case of never-ending-BS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The end of this story is CabFiascoGuy changed his inc.'s name before our court case came up. He sued, we countered, I won but got nothing because of how crappy our laws are. The State of Florida allowed a thief to steal $10,000 of our money. We've put over $38,000 into them trying to FIX them. I just wish I had gutted everything and started over. It would have been CHEAPER. But no, I thought we could work this out and I had our granite installed so I'm now stuck for many years. I have a horrible ordeal detailed here on garden web. What a can of worms you opened this morning. I think Ill work on these cabinets today. IÂd like to be done before I hit the three year anniversary of when they were installed. I need to re-order two drawer fronts tomorrowÂ....See MoreHow did you decide between Pure White and Creamy White Cabinets
Comments (17)I had the same situation between which white to choose. I completely agree with everyone that says you can't really choose a color until you see the sample in your new kitchen. I picked during the framing stage by putting all the samples next to each other in what was to be the kitchen and looking at them at different times of the day over several days. I hung a tarp over the exterior wall to try and simulate the lighting of the kitchen after sheet rock. I have a hard time with creamy whites because they go yellow in the evening here (Seattle) so I picked BM White Dove, which was the middle of the road in my samples. Of course I was second guessing myself right up until the end, but I'm glad I went with the the mid-white of the samples as it does tend to go a little yellow at night and it's not too stark during the day. The grey undertone helps keep the yellowing minimal. Here's what I came up against that others should know...my cabinets were site finished and they were sprayed with a primer of bright white. Talk about operating room! I was glad I didn't go with the brightest white of my samples. Then the first coat of BM White Dove Satin Impervo went on. Each time I had to shut down the job site for three days and crank the heat while the paint cured. I hated waiting three days to see the cabinets and all the built-ins! Anyway, after the first coat of White Dove I snuck in the house at night. The cabinets were the dingyest yellow of all yellows! Yikes! Of course I cried because I had picked the wrong color when I was hoping I had picked the perfect color. Back to square one. Ugh. But then the next day as I moped around the job site I noticed that the cabinets didn't match my sample from the store. Here's what happened...I went to my local BM store and bought several quarts of tinted Satin Impervo paint mixed at the store. After I chose the White Dove, my painter went to his BM wholesaler and bought White Dove Satin Impervo off the shelf as it is one of BM's stock colors. Although most say the formulas are the same, they aren't! The difference was horrifying! Luckily it was the first coat, I was able to figure out the problem and the final coat went on perfectly in store mixed White Dove paint. Sadly, we had already finished all 40 shelves and 74 doors when the carcasses were painted and the mistake was discovered so we had to go back and redo all of them. My point? No matter what you choose, always go with the exact same formulation as your sample!...See MoreWhat Do You Do "When Customs Wrongfully Confiscate Your Plant?
Comments (14)I'm not sure what to do. I would either file a complaint with customs to try to sort it out or message Iyares on eBay and tell them what happened. They may be able to sort it out or offer to send you another plant. Last year, I had a similar situation. I ordered a Christmas cactus from a seller on eBay and Customs either seized it or sent it back to the seller. Three weeks later I received a letter from Customs explaining that because it didn't have a phytosanitary certificate and other necessary documents it wasn't allowed to go through customs. Also earlier this year, I ordered a Hoya Kerrii from a seller named bkinterplants and the poor plant was in transit for over a month and the poor plant was so stressed out that it died a week later from a fungal infection. The seller offered to send a replacement plant if I ordered another plant but I decided to get a refund from eBay. It took a couple weeks to get the refund after a case was opened for item not as described. You can always explain the situation to eBay and ask for a refund since eBay covers your purchases....See Morepalimpsest
