I think glass shelves are great. They would mirror the glass in the shower stall.

I think glass shelves would look great, too. However, I wouldn't decide against a nice print either. As it is now, it looks like the toilet has a nice little nook, somewhat separate from the rest of the bath. I wouldn't bother me to not be able to see the print from the doorway, or even to see just part of it, any more than it would bother me to not have a full shot of the toilet. You will see it fully when you walk facing the toilet and probably also reflected in the vanity mirror. If it really bothers you, you could do 4 prints (two across and two up and down) centered in the space so that you could see two of them fully and two of them would be visually behind the shower corner when you enter.

i've come across "corner" glasss shelves, either sold individually or as a unit. i guess a unit (usually 3 shelves) wouldn't be considered floating since it would have metal (nickel in my case)to hold the unit together. maybe a unit would look better?

i was also thinking (bear with me on this) about putting a straight floating glass shelf with the depth of the shelf butted up against the corner to the left and another one, lower down, with the depth of the shelf butted up against the corner to the right.

olychick, at first i didnt mind so much when i did have a print above the toilet. but the concensus was it accentuated that half wall look (i get intimidated real easy). if i do get 4 smaller prints, should i then get silvery or nickel look frames? i purposely bought that branch print with the dark wood frame to compliment my dark vanity, and it looks real nice. so i'm thinking the other frames should be light?

I think you might be over thinking it. Actually I am not sure that you want to make that corner a focal point anyway, since it draws your attention to looking at a toilet. A print over the toilet, half hidden or not, would probably be fine.

lol i tend to over think everything. but i'm not quite understanding how glass shelves (or whatever)would bring more attention to the toilet than a print would. the shelves would be probably hung higher than a print.

I was thinking if they were in the corner or that recess to the side. But you are right, shelves or print over the toilet would be about equal. What is the pale blue color in the hallway? I like that.

its bm 505. sorry cant remember the name. i have that color in the living room and throughout the hall. it takes on a very light pale blue (as shown) but in reality it has a lot of green in it.

anyway, here's a pic of the print that was behind the toilet. i love the print and decided to keep it. i stuck it behind the door for now.

Is this a bath that most guests use when visiting or a more private bathroom?

I would think that worrying about how the toilet looks at that angle, and trying to decorate for that, would result in an odd view when standing in front of the toilet or looking in the mirror over the vanity,which I assume lines up straight with the toilet and wall.

If you want to compensate for the partial wall view, I would think about hanging some decorative wall piece, perhaps branches, that doesn't have such specific perimeter lines but flows through the space. Something like this, perhaps:

If you end up with branches that flow more sideways, I would try to have itr run from right to left, so that the eye is carried into the room and across.

As an alternative, you could also get the great wall decals that are out there and do some branches and leaves.

I think the original pic is gorgeous and would look terrific there. It seems like you only are standing at the door for a moment before you are in the room and the pic is fully in view. It also would draw your eyes up and away from the toilet; you'd be anticipating rounding the corner to see the full pic. Can you hang it above toilet again so people here can give you an opinion?

justgotabeme, funny you should ask. thats kinda how i screwed up in the first place. it's a guest bathroom and i should have kept that first and foremost in my head. there was ever any "need" to have a bigger shower. right now my son uses it and, yeah, it's nice for him but he'll be moving on eventually. i have my masterbath and will only take my shower in that. so this should have been treated as a "powder room" with a little shower if needed for guests.

I actually like that long green picture you have behind the door. If you placed that above the toilet, it would be simple, complements the framed branch print on the other wall and it fills that space with color. Seems like people are only spending a few seconds "walking" into the bathroom to see the angles of the shower glass. They will be spending more time inside the bathroom and the view will be more even (if I understand your pictures correctly). Nice artwork!!!

Again, I want to say that it is a toilet, not a fireplace, so the sense of "entry" and focal point you would expect in a room meant for living is not really as important in a small bathroom. In a perfect world each room would be perfectly proportioned, etc. This is a small bathroom, nicely renovated, and decently sized and laid out. I guess because I live in a city, I am used to seeing small bathrooms (smaller than this, and often awkward)even in expensive properties and I don't think about it all that much.

all your assumptions are correct about the vanity mirror reflecting whatever i hang above the toilet. i'm leaning towards putting the long print behind the toilet as suggested. but i'm curious about hanging a(dark wood) cabinet in that recessed wall. thank you all and if you have any other suggestions, please let me know.

I agree that the picture is really nice and would look fine there. I don't like cabinets or shelves over the toilet. To me, they feel claustrophobic and I worry about things falling off of them into the toilet, yuk.

I don't think you made your guest shower too big at all. In fact, where we live 36" is code. Even if it isn't used much once your son leaves, the added size will be appreciated when you have visitors. It's lovely to be able to treat guests to all the comforts of home.

I think a cabinet on that wall would look odd. If you have the pic above the toilet, it might be too crowded looking, with both pics and cabinet in view from the door. Do you need the storage space? If so, could you do a recessed cabinet there? If so, I'd paint it the same color as the wall to recede it.

Can you rest the tall painting on a box or something on the back of toilet to mimic hanging it, so we can see? If you do that and then take a dark piece of paper to mimic a cabinet the size you are imagining and tape it to the wall where you mean, you can see how it would look.

so i found a box, propped up the print and the camera lost power! my son took a pic with his phone and emailed it. still waiting for it to come through.

anyway, i wouldn't do the print above the towels, a cabinet and a print above the toilet..i agree, would be too crowded.

i agree that both a cabinet and the print would be too much. (although that little alcove with the toilet paper seems to be asking for something!) i think the print looks fine there and complements your other pic. i also think a cabinet that matches your vanity would look fine there too---one or the other tho.

if i go with the print as is (behind the toilet) should i hang it a little higher? or lower for that matter? do i want the top of the frame the same height as the other frame?

I would probably put the center of the picture slightly below eye level if that works over the toilet.(since it is long). I don't think it has to line up with the other picture. That one is on a completely different plane, and it might look a bit 'static' if its too lined up.

thanks! great suggestion. that was my thinking, too (didnt think of the word static, though lol). originally, i would have thought to hang it a little higher, but you're right...lower is the way to go.

should i leave that recessed wall alone? is it screaming for something? if so, what? i dont think i'm opposed to letting it be as i'm leaning towards a pared down look as i'm getting older.

Yep. Leave that wall be. It's not important. You don't want the room too cluttered. And yes the dark wood frames are great. Relax, you are over-thinking.

I agree that it looks wonderful. I'm surprised you second guessed yourself from when you first put it there. I wouldn't put anything on the wall in the alcove, but if it really bugs you, how about something like this? Not any of them specifically but a wall unit, mirrored maybe or clear glass...or a cool wall hung magazine rack above the toilet. Something horizontal might be better than another vertical piece..just an idea

thanks guys. still gotta get a mirror for the wall opposite the wall where the towels are hung, glass for the vanity lighting (all 3 broke when the guy was installing the lighting) and a cover for the baseboard heating. when it's all done i'll post pics of the whole room.

here's the kinda ironic part of this whole thing. before i even ordered the glass for the shower (the 36x36 base was already in)i was in the bathroom forum and almost everyone suggested that i go with clear glass...if i had done that, i wouldn't be in this pickle!

dont get me wrong, as unpopular as it is, i DO like the glass i got, just not the size. but i'm rollin' with it and trying to make the best of the situation.

Personally I wouldn't have wanted clear glass. It may look pretty, but I'd have added curtains around it to feel private while taking a shower.
Yeah, I'm the type that could live on a deserted island ALONE and still feel the need for curtains.
