As for the window treatment, are you wanting to get rid of the white blinds, or just the handkerchief valance?

I think wood blinds the color of your newel post would be wonderful, perhaps with black tapes, and then a valance hung high so that it just covers the top of the window by a few inches, to give the window the illusion of more height and to keep it as uncovered as possible. A fabric valance in something like this would be great, I think, as the colors seem to fit, and it would bring some of the curves of the carpet pattern up onto the walls, to balance all the rectangles:

Thankyou Les, I take that compliment highly. I love your ideas. In order to save on money is there anything I can do if I leave the blinds. I actually don't even need them since I leave them open all the time. I have two windows in the hall. The one you see and there is one on the top landing. I love the paisley idea and yes I have learned here to mount the rod higher than the window. I will look into the cost of wood ones with black tapes (love that)

I really like Les's idea about the wood blinds with the black tape, would tie in that window beautfully with the rest of the area. Right now your window treatment looks weak in comparision to your bold runner. I dont think I would do any topper especially a patterned one though, I think it might look too busy. The wood blinds with the black tape is a brilliant idea.

Love the picture you have hung by the stairs, the colors and frame compliment that area now.

I just wanted to say how much I love your runner and that foyer! Have you posted more of your home on this forum? From what I can tell in the above photo, your home looks like the house of a friend of mine. It's sort of an old mission style (I guess) with a large wide front porch.

It was a dump when we bought it and my husband re-did everything..kitchen, 4 baths, porches, basement apt. for my mom. It's hard when you try to redecorate with what you have. Change one thing, and it throws off everything else.It's like the domino effect! I am trying to do the best with as little money as possible. I finally got rid of the old owner's navy blue with rose colored flower runner. It was hideous and went with nothing, but my daughter's upcoming wedding was a good excuse to talk my husband into getting rid of it.

Oh, I remember. I was the one that suggested the "no, no" shutters. lol

Really nice! I removed the previous owner's carpet runner from our stairs and now our small dog has trouble going up and down, so I need to have a new one. May I ask who installed yours? The guys at Lowe's told me I'd need to pay for a wall to wall room installation, which seemed a bit wrong since putting the runner in will probably take less than half the time...

I got it at a place in Long Island, NY. I had gotten different prices from 4 places(only smaller carpet stores, not HD or Lowes). I was surprised that they beat the prices significantly ($2,200 compared to close to $4,000). It goes all the way up to the third floor attic(including hallways) and really turns the look of the attic rooms into something more polished and quiet (stairs creak). Everyone's price included installation though. This place didn't charge anything extra for stairs.
