Stain for IPE deck....
Comments (5)I just got done staining our new Ipe deck with Woodzotic and was pleased with the results. As I couldn't find a picture of what the stain would look like when applied, I was a little apprehensive before ordering. Now I'll just have to wait and see how it holds up. By the way, I did not sand before applying and didn't have any trouble. Here's a link to a page with pictures. Comments (3)Lets try one more time to remove the mith, sanding ipe with 60/80 grit has no effect one way or the other far as it taking finish.I dont know how that got started but lets stop it right now. Messmers is junk finish. Remove candle wax with hot soppy water/scrubing just like the Army it solves everything. A quick sand with an orbital after its dry. Use twp 116 rustic on ipe. Comments (9)Ok..you guys are great & I finally had to register rather than just lurk! My ironwood w/cable deck was just completed & I'm trying to make a gameplan for keeping it dark. Oiling it often is ok for me...stripping is not. Do you recommend leaving the wood exposed for a month if you just plan to oil it too (penofin)? My contractor keeps telling me it should be done immediately so I've done the posts & rails but not the decking. My rails came beautifully beveled from the lumber yard with a lovely surface. However, my contractor sanded down the plugs in various places so the oil is absorbing unevenly. (I obviously found this website one day too late!) Is it best to keep oiling it, let it rest for a month or have my contractor sand the full length so it will all have the same absorbtion rate? I've searched the site but can't find a clear answer to this. Thanks!...See MoreIpe deck white railing options?
Comments (4)srercrc is going to think I am picking on him but I wouldn't use cedar if you are going to paint. New growth cedar is horrible with respect to rot. A small amount of moisture will rot it right to the core (and quickly). Why not use the cheapest material (PTP) and properly prep and stain it with a solid. Solid stains offer breathability whereas paint does not. On verticals you should be fine with keeping it clean and maintained like sre recommended. I would guess every 4-5 years you would need to recoat....See Moresweet11395
