I just got through using 516 on ipe worked just fine, the second coat took a lot longer to dry than the 116.

Cedartone has the least amount of uv protection.I am not understanding the water moving it out of the way or whats wrong with the finish in the first picture. J.

I don't understand either, why after water sat on the deck, even a small amount, the stain was removed, and there was a black oily ring left behind. Additionally, mold spores were having fun in the light areas created by the water.

Any way, it didn't work for me, by any measure. The distributor I spoke to when trying to get 116, specifically told me not to use 500 on ipe, and that it would not penetrate exotic hardwoods. Seems to have been the case for me. Maybe it went on too hot and flash dried with no penetration. Maybe ipe was too much for it.

Nice job alb. Looks awesome. The WoodZotic is made for hardwoods. TWP, while a great product in and of itself, is not made for hardwood application as it is a deep penetrating tinted sealer.

I guess I am gonna have to fly to Oklahoma and tar and feather Hyatt with a solution of WoodZotic and Ostrich plumes.

Why is the TWP 100 series not made for hardwood applications? While others on this forum have said that TWP even states their product is not for hardwoods I've never seen that.

And the manufacturer does say the 100 Series is recommended for hardwoods.

My post is about the 500, I have never used the 100. The distributor I spoke to specifically said not to use TWP 500 on ipe. The website has the same language for 500 as you posted. The distributor told me that although it was recommended for hardwoods, it was not recommended for "exotic" hardwoods.

I haven't seen anyone that used the 100 report the problems I had.

I had the exact same experience.
I used TWP516 - faded after a month. Tried a second coat, same result.
Called the manufacturer and they said do not use on IPE. It is too dense it will not penetrate and will remain on the surface.
Tried TWP 116 and really I am still not happy.

This is not the right material for your type of wood. No wonder it does not last very long, it is sitting on the surface. This is the first time I read or realized (I can be slow that way) that this was something other than a "traditional" decking material. Certainly, Ipe and Cumaru are becoming more of a commonly used product. I would use TWP 100 series for those types of wood. Those species are extremely dense and hard (don't need to tell you, you have a deck of the stuff), TWP 500 series base oil will not penetrate very well on extremely dense woods. It is more for Pine, Ash, Cedar, Redwood, all species that are relatively soft compared to what you are using. 100 series works very well on Teak, Ipe, Cumaru, and a few other exotic species that I am aware TWP has been applied on. So, what to do. First, the 500 series should be removed. I would make up a solution of 3 gal water, 1 gal Bleach, 1 cup liquid laundry soap, and 1/4 cup TSP (tri sodium phosphate). Apply with a bug sprayer, let sit 15-30 minutes, scrub with a pine bristle broom or scrub brush on a stick (no hands and knees, that is no fun) and rinse clean. You may have to do this more than once, I give you this recipe versus telling you to go to the store or sending you a cleaner myself. Here is why, Cumaru and other similar woods, have very high tannins. So what you say, well, if you use a cleaner with NaOH (sodium hydroxide) it will turn the surface of the wood very dark.

Just be forewarned, TWP 116 (low VOC version of TWP 516 -- both named rustic oak) looks like redwood... not oak.
