Wooden Handrailings for Front Entrance Steps...

Our current house has an entrance of 6 steps up to a 5x5 covered "holding area" in front of the door. We have resurfaced the crumbling contrete steps with bluestone treads and "thinstone" risers.

We removed the black iron railings - the inferior installation of which had caused the bottom concrete step to crack where the railing was supposed to be fixed.

The entrance has an existing white wooden post holding up the roof at the corner of the holding area - we wish to replace the iron railing with wooden railings - more in keeping with the style of the house perhaps.

Question, what type of wood should one use - bearing in mind it will be painted (white) after installation - or should it be white plastic? And how would the wooden railings vertical posts be fixed to the bluestone treads?
