Quilt Backing for Working in Wools

calliope

I'm getting close to wrapping up a quilt top and planning ahead for my next project. Many years ago I bought a tremendous amount of 100% wool suiting and think I'd like to address a very homespun looking quilt using this material.

I'm a little uncomfortable in mixing wools with other fabrics, since I've never sewn in wool, save making........well.....suits, and backing them in the satiny dress lining, expecting them to be dry cleaned.

So, I'm asking the more experienced quilters who have done, or seen done a wool quilt their suggestions for batting (synthetic or cotton) and especially what is an appropriate backing material. Also, the only wool quilts I've seen are tied, as opposed to quilted. These, btw, were done by a farm wife who was using heavier blanket and coat weight recycled wool. Is the wool suiting fine enough to even consider hand quilting it to finish it off?

Any suggestions for working with wool suitings would be appreciated. Thanks.
