Storm Door Help Needed

We had a wood-core storm door installed by a contracter several years back. The door now is starting to rot due to a leak we had. We are looking to replace the door.

The problem lies in the fact that my wife is IN LOVE with the designs on the tempered glass window in the door. We pretty much need to replace the door but keep the window.

What makes this harder is that there is NO label on the door or frame identifying the manufacturer. The identity of the contractor is unknown. The people at the local big-box home improvement stores say the door can't be fixed, and shouldn't be fixed due to possible mold inside, and say the door is probably covered under warranty, but alas, without a label...

There IS however, a label on the tempered glass. Here's hoping that somehow, someway, someone is out there somewhere who can either identify the maker of the door, offer advice on how to find a new door that will accept this glass, or even offer some ideas that I haven't thought of.

The window measures 27 5/8" W x 69 5/8" H. The door measures 35 3/8" w. The label on the glass says "Glass Unlimited, Tempered, ANSI Z97.1-1984, 16 CFD 1201-H, SGCC-598 1/8L, C2830, BS6206A"

Thanks in advance for ANY advice or ideas offered.

Larsen storm doors was what our contractor used and they have a great selection and are used by many builders/contractors . Not sure they would custom do a door with the old glass but the other option would be to have the glass removed and have a carpenter build you a door using the glass. Good Luck.

Have a woodworker make a custom door from solid wood. The door is mostly glass, so the actual door is really only a frame about 6" wide to hold the glass. The problem with wood core doors is the core is pressed wood. Once you cut in for a window, the pressed wood core is not protected from the elements. I would make the new door from solid Oak, Cherry, Mahogany, or other hardwood and completely seal or varnish all sides and bottoms before installing the glass. Call some local custom cabinetmakers, or maybe you have a friend or neighbor who is a woodworker.

Good morning, SGCC 598 is registered to American Glass Company, AGC. Can you be more specific about the "designs" on the glass? Does the door use patterned glass? Are the designs etched into the glass? If they are a specific pattern, then it might be possible to find that pattern elsewhere...otherwise I might suggest finding a capable finish carpenter to take a look at your door to see what advice he or she might offer, rather than discussing with the big box folks.

Front doors should stand out and be welcoming, color that pops. You could try something like a Raspberry Truffle in the reds, or maybe a Bermuda Blue.

Your school system certainly has more relaxed rules concerning drop off/pickup of a child. My town mandates a parent/caretaker be outside, at the bus stop with the child, for pick-up and drop off….no exceptions. If it is pouring, the driver will wait the extra minutes necessary to allow both parent and child to approach the bus. The adult must accompany the child to the bus. As for your door, I like a full view door. A new ,properly installed, door will need no storm. We had a screen door made for the summer, easy on/easy off, with the wood painted the same color as the door. Or: a full view door with sidelights. You new door examples show sidelights, but I don’t see sidelights in your photo.
