IPE decking question

I have just ordered my ipe for my deck project and have a couple of questions....

1)uning 1x6 and 5/4 x6 how close to the edges should I place the screws?

2) I've read that anchor seal is not recommended but will twp or another product seal the end cuts?

3) any recomendations for saw blades?

1 - I like the wide look of the 1x6 boards so I made sure my screw placement accentuated that. I took a scrap piece and drilled a few samples. I made a 'spacer' block by holding another small scrap next to it and made marks so I could easily keep the spacing the same for the whole deck. I think mine ended up being about 1 1/4" in from each side.

2 - I didn't use anything on my ends per John Hyatt and PressurePros advice. I used end trim on all exposed ends and made all butt joints tight. I haven't seen any problems.

3 - I used the Diablo blades that are available at HD based on a few other recommendations here. They worked great both on the circ and miter. Towards the end of the build, you could tell they were getting tired though. If you are building a deck larger than 250sqft, I'd recommend planning on two blades per saw and switch them mid-build.

Go with 1/2 to 3/4" max from the edge, using 1 1/4" with 1x6's is asking for cupping problems down the road.

Itauba is a laurel species and is used here in Amazonia for making wooden boats. It is an oily wood and extremely good around water. For that reason it has been traditionally used for boat construction. It sounds like the deck you looked at was originally cut to European specifications. In Europe many more species of wood are used for decking than in the USA. It would be nice if this trend also took hold in the U.S. as the more species that are harvested from the forest under sustuainalbe forest management programs the better. dk

Im on "the Island" and did IPE last summer.... I ordered from George at East Teak after getting some competitive pricing from him, a comfort feeling I didnt get from a local shop, and good conversation... The 2 I almost ordered from were Burt Lumber in Huntington Station, (knew their stuff, but were expensive.. they are the ones behind postcapsandrailings.com) Kleet Lumber... decent pricing, but that customer service feeling (or lack thereof.. kinda like when you call a mechanic and they just want to deal with the pros and cant stand a question or 2)... wasnt there and A third place that wasnt bad was Family Lumber.. I think they are in Bethpage.. Good luck.. and even if go local.. it cant hurt to give George the chance to bid it out...

After looking at the link that's not water, looks like some sort of a clear finish. Those look good only for a short time then fade. The brackets on the rails are made by deckorators. You can purchase them online at their site or by any dealer that carries deckorators, AWDS is one of those. The cap looks like 5/4 x 6 material. Glueing is overkill imo & not really needed. Screwing the cap every 12" is more than needed also, every 16 -24" would be fine. Do screw into the post tho. Al
