Looking for advice on Solid Color Stains
Comments (5)Are you asking about concrete stain or wood stain? If you are asking about a solid stain for wood - I have used Olympic Solid Color Stains (for decks, fences, siding) with excellent results. It hides the woodgrain, allowing the texture to show thru (taken off the brochure). We added to the existing deck that runs across the back of our house, removed a screen porch, changed the railing - added additional support, etc - on a budget. The previous owners had never cleaned or stained the wood. We tried to use a transparent stain, but it showed all the different new & old woods. The Solid stain covered it all, made it look the same, fresh, and clean. That has been about 8 years ago. I power wash lightly to keep it clean, and reapply the solid stain as needed mostly to the floor (about every 2 years), where furniture scrapes across it - snow shovels, etc. It takes alot of abuse. We used the Cape Cod Gray. While we are in the Northeast, we do live on the water, and the wind and salt and tree sap is a factor....See MoreRemove paint/stain from composite decking
Comments (8)try these steps for either vinyl / PVC siding or decking (as I did) *latex paint - when paint is wet: start with 100% rubbing alcohol and dilute with tap water at max 50/50 on a white cotton rag and wipe surface when paint is dry: use 100% acetone (e.g., nail polish remover) and dilute with tap water at max 50/50, with same type rag vigorously wipe then - since paint will have been spread around (looking like a stain) - use Goo Gone and finish the rest until clean, is now nearly spotless *oil-based paint - for wet or dry oil-based paint, start with 100% acetone (e.g., nail polish remover) and dilute with tap water at max 50/50 on a white cotton rag, vigorously wipe surface if stain from paint is still apparent, use Goo Gone (what I had) and finish the rest until clean nearly spotless I tried a lot of different solutions, literally, except for those that research had informed would be ineffective for what I was doing or would damage the surface (powerwashing, abrasive scrubbing with fine steel / plastic type scrubbers) This post was edited by craig1721 on Sat, Oct 18, 14 at 15:58...See MoreCan I stain the front porch a different color from rear deck?
Comments (4)Thanks Renee. It might not show up well in the photos, but the stonework around the porch has a lot of grey in it. And the door is a gray-toned blue. We also have a lot of rocks in the landscaping. So I guess I was wondering if I should play off those. I don't mind the brown, but just wondered if breaking it up would be better. I also questioned if a dark brown porch would be "too much" with the roof and the mulch....See MoreCan you remove stain from ipe deck?
Comments (2)If you used one of the recommended oil-based finishes (e.g., Ipe Oil or Messmers), you can just wait a year or so. It'll fade to gray naturally. Or you can sand it if you're in a hurry and don't mind doing the work....See Moredmhmeh
