New England Quilt Shops

Hi everyone, this is my first time to the Quilting Forum. I am in the middle of many quilting projects, since recently I picked up the quilting bug again (after 30 years) when my first grandchild was born.

I am wondering for those New Englanders out there: What are your Not-to-be-missed favorite quilt shops? Your local favorites? I am in Maine but not far from the NH and Mass. borders. In fact, I will be in the Boston area this weekend. I am always willing to travel in search of yet more fat quarters!

Definitely Keepsake Quilting in Center Point, NH. It's in sort of a triangle area - I missed it the first time I went there.
BTW, where in Maine are you? Mom and dad used to live in Sebago Lake.

I agree! I love Jinny's fabrics, especially the tone-on-tone prints. You can always find something to "blend" with something else. The best part is, they keep reprinting some of the classics! She also has a great book on choosing colors "Color Confidence." That book was very helpful to me, explaining about shading, deep darks and accents and why they work. I've been designing applique lately, and I can see the influence it has had on my color choices. BlueBars

Hi, There is also a lovely quilt shop in North Conway, very close to a nice seafood restaurant called Jonathan's. Here is her website: www.quiltshopnh.com. She recently relocated to her own building from a nearby strip mall and has a very enticing selection of fabrics. If you get to Sanford, ME. from Saco, there is a quilt shop: www.kathiesquiltshoppe.com and also a discount place called Marden's that sells end lots of fabric at unbelievable prices...about $2.99 a yard. I have found fabric there that I paid full price for at Keepsake before. Keepsake has a new sales corner. They do have lovely fabric but the last time I was in, I saw some priced at about $9.25 a yard. There is also the Barking Rose in Cornish, ME. - a bit off the beaten path from N. Conway but you might end up in that neck of the woods. She may have a website, I'm not sure. Enjoy your trip! lots2do from NH (grew up in Maine)

I'm actually surprised this doesn't happen more often. I have only been burnt one time ordering anything, and it was before the inet stores were mainstream and it was a mail order made through advertising in legitimate gardening mags. I paid up front, and it was to a legitimate "name" I knew professionally and the check was cashed immediately. And the business number was always on an answering machine and the calls never returned, the merchandise never came, and the money never returned. I pursued it through some government agencies I knew that particular business to be governed by. Yep, the business had new owners, they had quality problems and were inexperienced, and they just got in way over their heads. They had no business cashing checks for new orders, however when they knew darned good and well they would not be filling them. It was through the mail, across state lines, and if I had pursued it any further, would have been nasty for them, I'm sure. The funny thing is, one of the fairly prominent gardening mags several years later actually listed them as a source for certain kinds of material. LOL. So, I no longer bought that magazine, because those articles could not have been written by anyone current in that industry. I have ordered material of all sorts from many places in the world over the inet. It's a wonderful alternative to being locked into the few box stores I won't shop at who are dominating many rural areas. Yes, I am careful from whom I order, and often make sure they've had references from friends first or are companies I already know and trust. It's also a great equalizer for home based businesses, in that they can compete against the 'giants' on equal footing since they don't have to maintain a billion dollars worth of store fronts and overhead. One of these days, down the line, I think they'll be more highly regulated, and until that time, one just has to be careful.

Cotton Weeds in Freeport Maine changed my life - for the better! -LOL- When I visited my favorite B&B (for the second time in 3 years) the owner of the Inn told me to go there when I told her I wanted to "buy" a Maine quilt. Well, needless to say when I walked in I not only bought a beautiful quilt I went away with a quilt kit (just to see if I liked quilting)!! My life has been better from that day forward...that was November of 2008.

It's a lovely shop and you can see what it looks like online. They don't sell online but have a lovely web site.

I live in southern Mass. just north of the Rhode Island state line. It's about 50to 60 minutes south of Boston. The Quilter's Stash in North Attleboro is my local quilt store and well worth a trip. They not only have gorgeous fabric but lots of inspirational samples on the walls. Emma's Quilt Cupboard in Franklin is only about 20 minutes away and also a very nice shop. You could see two great shops in one trip.

There's a quilt shop in Rockland, Me . . . Quilt Divas. I liked the fabric and overall selection there. I live in NC and my hubby is from Bar Harbor. I made him stop on the way up 2 years ago. I fell in love with the blueberry fabric and bought some to make my mother-in-law a blueberry lapquilt. When I got home I didn't have enough and had to go online and buy more. In Trenton, Me there is another shop, Quilting by the Sea, I think. I like it too. My hubby goes with me and talks to the owner while I browse. Thanks for the info about the shop in North Attleboro. My daughter moved to Providence last year we haven't had time to explore the area. Will check it out next time we are there. Darlene
