Have you seen similar? Knife storage cutting board

My sis and I were both at the Housewares show in Chicago last weekend but took different paths through all the zillions of booths. (I spent a long time in the Wusthof booth and am jonesing for some really good knives.)

She ran across something kind of intriguing but the vendor was only there for some initial feedback (it's not for sale; he didn't even have business cards.)

It's a nicely made cutting board that can sit flat on the counter or stand upright (that's why the bottom is flat on the round one.) The back is tiled and has a magnetic strip for knives. So basically, you tip it up to get your knife of choice, then lay it flat to cut. Seems like it could be handy.

Have you seen anything similar? Or, do you have any other ideas knife storage? I'm going to order a big honkin' set of Wusthof, and right now my main storage option is to use a knife block. (I have used up my drawer space and have a tiled backsplash so I don't think I can install a magnetic strip there.) I have spice racks on my upper cabinet doors on the inside so no space for magnetic strips there.

It's an interesting idea. I would worry a bit about safety if I had many guests or people unfamiliar with my kitchen, who might be moving the knife block and having knives fall or cutting their hands as they reached to the back of the block. I wouldn't be confident that I could remember to warn everyone.

By the way, you *can* put a knife magnetic strip on a tiled BS if you want one there-- it might look wrong to you, but we have the technology.

I use edge guards and can fit all of my knives into one very small drawer. I have utility trays to keep them neat.

Edge guards don't dull your blades like some knife blocks do (though I would hope that Wusthof's wouldn't).

If you really like the magnetic strip, you can also put it on the side of an upper, by the sink (for example). You can even trim out a box around it and add a door.

If you really like the cutting boards and aren't up for making one yourself, you could hire a handyman or carpenter to do it for you. Making a simple one yourself would be pretty easy if you start with commercial cutting block with legs.

Writersblock, the black walnut is from the nice people on ebay that I mentioned in a previous post. They were much faster, more responsive and CHEAPER than the local John Boos distributors. You can find them on ebay as seller elaineart1901, they advertise cutting boards but will do custom counters up to four feet long. Perfect for me. And yes morton5, I can now threaten anyone in my kitchen with grievous bodily harm in a split second. Did you know mayhem literally means cutting the limbs off a person? Just sayin'. And while the bulk of the kitchen is done, I learned the hard way that it's virtually impossible to design cabinets for a space that hasn't been built yet, so I'll be coming to the boards seeking advice for redesigning certain cabinet areas, like around my fridge, and in a blank spot where I thought I wanted negative space, and now I think just looks -- unfinished or something.

len, you’re welcome. You won’t regret it. I hope you intend to cut right on the island, not just have a beautiful wooden island that you’re paranoid about getting marked up. We passed the 10 year anniversary this past June and while I’ve toyed with sanding it down a bit as mentioned above, I think we’re going to give it a few more years. Of course a few weeks after we hit 10 years we got a really bad stain from where I left the metal disc from a food mill sitting on the counter overnight. I don’t understand why a wet piece of metal leaves a dark black stain in the wood. There’s some sort of reaction between the wood and the metal when it’s wet. It’s not a rust stain. The marks are black. I’m sure it will sand out if I bother but… who cares? It’s a kitchen, not a museum.

What dulls a knife is using it against a hard surface. Always use a cutting board when using a knife, don't put them in the dishwasher and don't let them bang against anything. They should stay sharp for home use with just an occasional use of a steel. If the cutting edge rests against wood or plastic, it should be fine in a drawer. It's not sitting there that dulls it. It's banging on metal or a china plate or something like that (and of course, using it). For my slicing knife, I wrap the blade in a towel and put it in the front of the drawer. There are also knife shields that you can get at the restaurant supply. I have one called edgeguard. You just slip your knife in it, and it protects the edge. (I'm a chef, so keeping sharp knives is important to me.) bk

Seems fairly straightforward. Looks like a standard spice pullout. To make the knife block, use 3" (measure actual available width) wood pieces. Run wood through a table saw with the blade set at minimal depth to create the knife opening. Optionally, maybe a router could create the openings. Create blocks with different width openings to accommodate difference size knives. Glue the blocks together & install in the spice drawer pullout. Similar to the instructions here. I'd prefer the knife storage be closer to the prep zone than beside the stove as shown, assuming the photo above has a prep area closer to a water source. HTH, tmy

I think it'd be too heavy to flip once you'd loaded it with knives, especially Wusthofs.

I did stick a rotating knife holder thingy under my cabinet to hold some knives and it works okay, but doesn't hold that many. It has holes on both sides so you can stick two short blades in the same hole from opposite sides. I might move it to my trailer but I really shouldn't have that many knives for camping.

Works great until you need to use the pan and have to get those magnets off.
