Hi, thinking about replacing P/T deck with P/T deck....

Hi all,

Live in northeast, presently we have an elevated deck maybe 15x25, 2x12 joists, 16OC, sits maybe 8 feet up off the back of the house on piers.

Now, i have heard about trex problems etc, and have read about the other materials available.

I am leaning towards replacing the P/T with new P/T stuff. The existing deck is 18yo, reasonable decent shape, has a few nails popping up, splits in wood etc.

Is P/T that bad? we are the types to maintian it, meaning that I plan on painting etc. How bad would the deck look after 18 years, no worse than the present and I think the previous owner never really maintained it and does going more expensive really make sense (does it add value to your home, "materially" reduce your maintenace issues, easier to install, after 20 years what will happen,,,etc)..

I think, maybe the composites, ipe, etc are bit of a hype, and maybe not really worth big bucks...Myabe its better to pour money into other aspects of the home?

18 years old,that project was done with CCA mateial. Buy now and you will get acq material the life of said is no place near the cca stuff, in fact no one has any idea on what the life span of even .40 acq will be. I do know when I cut into acq the center is still yellow the preasure treatment looks like spray paint. CCA never did this.

Composite material on the hype scale is hmmmmm around 10 points with #1 being no hype at all. Ipe is 0 hype or #1 on the hype scale. Will a high $ ipe deck last 20 years with a acq.40 frame under it ? Now that is a hype question. It has nothing to do with ipe, everything to do with the green mafia pushing big money into an area they knew nothing about. Then drifing on over to the wine/pasta bar after calling jane fonda on the cell in Carmel and asking how the grilled shirmp was.

I have a Wallet over here with a 20 year old pt cca project fairly big one,same kinda thing splits,splenters, but hey!! the thing still stands and dont look all that bad in a realative sort of way. I did some replacement,very cool ipe benches with allum balusters, couple of coats of twp finish,braced up the tiled bar,things like that. Tina is good for another 20 with some upkeep and furture replacement of the decking but I cant see any problem with the frame. J

Thats exactly my point,, after 18-20 years or so,,, is a more expensive deck really worth it.

My existing structure, I am replacing just the decking, the rails, stairs etc ,are sturdy and will look brand new after tossing a fresh coat of paint on it,,,, and once again several years hence.

Florey, it has nothing to do with stylish or directness. As Puffy said, it's often not easy to convey in the title what a post is about. More than that, as others said, the posts very often wander from the original content intended, and we like it like that. Well, I think most of us do. There is a nice freedom here to let our minds wander where they will and express what any thread brings up even if not 'on topic'. It's really the heart of this place to me. These days there really aren't all that many posts to keep up with that I feel I miss many... eventually. If you find this hard to follow, just be glad you weren't here a decade ago when we were really prolific. Smiles. On the other hand, it's too bad you weren't. Relax, enjoy, read and post as you will.

Hi, Ianna :-) Yes, it IS a good question, but I'll be hanged if I can figure out the answer. As much as I appreciate the existance of this forum, NOTHING I've ever sent to Tech Support has been answered. I've asked them to delete double-posts, or sent tech questions, and the result has always been silence. True, none were actually big-deal things, but still..... As far as I can see, if you want a new name the only thing to do is to come online and create a whole new account for yourself. That's a bit of a pain if you want to keep your trading lists and other attributes, but just want to change names. It's easy enough to get a new account; I've still got my old name/account here, and if I wanted to use it as "another person" I would. But why? I suppose it could be my Evil Twin for angry replies, but the whole POINT of coming here (for me anyway) is the community that's created by like-minded (and been-there-done-that-ness) gardeners. You come here to form relationships, not to yell "you're so STUPID you don't know chickweed from alfalfa!" at someone. Flame wars on a gardening site...strange concept. I only wish Tech would tell me how to delete my old name, it's annoying to know it's still in the system. (Come to think of it, what DOES alfalfa look like?) As for getting mail, I went down that road already. Here's the final tally: if you send mail to someone and choose to hide your email, then good luck ever hearing from them again (unless you include your username, they come online and find your page and mail you through THERE). There actually ISN'T any forwarding service "from" GW. I thought you could reply to "user@gardenweb.com" addresses and they would pass them on while keeping the email private. Not so. Yeah, I know: then why bother sending an anonymous email, unless it's a nastygram? Why? Well, it's because...I mean, it's a good reason for....ummm.....can I get back to you on that?

Hi Joe, I'm sorry to hear this too! I've had a few disasters here and there due to our monsoons right not. And poor Josh has had his share of fun with critters. I'm with Josh. I think bright shade would be the best for it. And maybe a little more water. I treated mine rough, and on the dry side and lost a lot of leaves too. Same with my Desert Rose. I would wait to water when the caudex was soft, and it would lose leaves! I just moved it outside yesterday, we'll see how it goes. Josh, Put your peppers to work! I've read a spray made of peppers and garlic will keep anything away! LOL! The only problem with aphids right now is on our sunflowers. JoJo

Jim, I just replaced my deck (lower and an upper) as a DIYer and did not find it very difficult. Ipe was a new wood to me so I spent some time researching it on the web and everything kept coming back positive. This site helped tremendously as questions and issues had already been addressed that I had not thought about. Using the search in this forum for "Ipe" (Bottom of page) will provide you a wealth of information. You will get answers to questions you did not know to ask. In addition, The pros here really help. Post progress pics and any specific questions and you will get all the help you need. I know you didn't ask my opinion jimrac. But I wouldn't paint it from the stories Iv heard.

I also have a old (15 year +) CCA 2x4 deck with the small shallow splits and knots. But its very solid. My mom built a deck a few years ago with the ACQ and its rotten and ready to be torn down.

I want my CCA deck to last another 15 years and wondered what to use on it. It has Olympic acrylic latex semi transparent gray stain with a few coats of linseed oil based PPG weatherscreen Clear wood preservative over the stain applied 2 years ago. It looks a bit faded, but my home is gray as well and the color suits me. I think the linseed oil didn't mold because its CCA. Only a guess.

john_hyatt.. Do you recommend the twp over the finish I have? And which twp? Or would I need to strip the old finish first. Which I dread because of the new siding on my home. Or should I continue with a clear linseed oil over the old finish?

No problem, its always good to hear other opinions and experiences. From what I gather, most tradespeople tell me the exterior acryliic paints are just as good as the stains and probably even a tad better based upon the brand of paint one buys. They say, most homeowners whom do decide, dont do the necessary pprep. ands prime work in making sure it lasts. I feel comfortable with paint.
