Help!!! need ideas on layout of gutted kitchen

We recently purchased a foreclosed home and are in the process of gutting it. The kitchen is my hangup. We are going to try and salvage the original cabinets as they are wood and in good shape just dirty. They are only 24" deep base and 15" deep wall cabinets. The kitchen is 20.5 feet long and 11'9' deep it is open to the family room and there is a half wall between the DR and kitchen which we are planning on taking down. There is a support pole also to consider, I am thinking a one wall kitchen with an island. My DH is wanting to incorporate the pole with some cabinets ??? I will try to attach a photo so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I would gut the cabinets and those soffits.

Then I would get the best layout I could and include an undermount sink. Possibly building the cabinets so that a regular size fridge appears built in. Possibly recessed lights.

I don't know about the pole.

Here are pictures of our design. We had the same half wall and made it a penisula, that looks at to our sunroom/DR. If you have a large family I would suggest extending the penisula to the pole so you can sit 4-5 stools. Where is the 20 foot wall that leads to the sliding glass door? is that across from the 1/2 wall? Do you plan to use that as the kitchen or is that the DR?

I would leave the sink where it is and work around it, especially since you have an existing window above it. I hope these pics help. I'm sure you'll get alot more responses. good Luck!

We definitely need a plan with dimensions. My first thought is to put the fridge & freezer on opposite ends of that back wall with the range centered between them. You'll want a pot filler, but it shouldn't be a problem as there's already water there for the fridge. Put the microwave and warming drawer in the island, and leave the sink where it is. This way you don't need to move any walls, or mess with the floors if you don't want to. And I would definitely remove that crazy soffit over the island! :-)

A paid professional will be your best bet. There's too much lacking here to get you up to speed on. You'll need the plans to file with your municipality anyway. I'm surprised that you began such an extensive job without having written plans, including those from an engineer to support all of those walls that came down. There may be some heat from the codes office for that. You are forgetting the human element in your plans. People need to have room to move through the space, and you are forgetting that most of all. A LOT of things you are proposing are below code and/or extremely poor design choices. Kitchens need 3' aisles minimum, and are better with the NKBA recommended minimum of 48". Baths need 60" minimum for a double vanity, and 30" of space for the toilet. You also have to have minimum walk spaces for each fixture. Humans occupy a minimum of a 2x2 cube when moving through the space. Chairs have to be pulled back to be occupied. Closets have to have room for people to access the hanging space. I could go on and on. Pay a pro. It'll be well spent money.

We have a pocket door on the 3/4 bath inside the master, and honestly we almost never close it. We close the bedroom swing door if we need privacy. The pocket door is there if we need it. But for a full bath going out into a hallway a swing door would be much better.

The DR area will be to the left of the half wall and the 20.5 wall is where the window is it is 20.5 from the half wall to the sliding glass wall. I will need to incorporate a computer desk area at the end on that wall also. We plan on taking the half wall down or at least opening it up to the dining room Thanks for your advice
