Thinking out of the box. Have you tried a stained glass gallery--the kind that sells supplies and gives lessons?

They have all kinds of glass and the owners are usually very talented and creative people. Upon discussion of your project, they may give you a solution that hasn't occurred to you.

Thanks. I actually have a friend who does stained glass. I'll have to contact her. I'm an art teacher, so I should be able to figure this out, shouldn't I? It's also why I can't afford the Glasskote!

I love that site edlakin. I need to give them a call. I'm not going to go that blue. I actually went to a tile place and brought home some samples that I though would look great jsut like that one, and it was too much. I have a glass cutting board that I used to have on my formica counter, and I tipped that up and loved it. Ever since we put in our dark counters, I've wanted to light things up without going too white. I think it will look great with out gray floors in out kitchen, and the cherry floors in out family room. I just want to keep any pattern to a minimum.

Here's a picture I took with a sample I brought home and the cutting board (It just one of those clear glass ones with the painted back).

Whether you go with solid glass or glass tile, you should look into replacing your outlets with plugmold so that you don't interrupt your gorgeous glass with ugly blobs. Someone on this forum also placed her sink light switch in a shallow box with a switchplate matching her cabinets mounted under an upper cabinet--very cool!

Try to find mindstorm's kitchen in finished kitchen blog. I think she has what you're looking for and I don't think she paid a forture for it.

We're using a slab of back-painted glass for our backsplash too. Look for a glass shop that does mirrors, shower doors, etc. They usually do a variety of things and will have samples of all types of glass.

They can back-paint the glass literally any color. They use an automotive paint called Chroma Base. You can bring a sample of your paint, tile, countertop, your favorite sweater, what ever you want, & they'll be able to match the color. They have a color chart but are happy to do custom matching.

Also you can request Star Fire glass which has a low iron content & makes the glass very clear. The colors are more accurate because you don't get the green tint of regular glass. Or if you like the greenish tint go with regular glass which is a lot less expensive. We're doing a bright white so we're going with StarFire glass.

The same shop is doing our backsplashes, shower doors, stair railings, & mirrors.

Judeny, I just looked at Mindstorm's kitchen and her backsplash is Glasskote. Darn! I was hopeful.

ccc123, when are they doing your backsplash? I can't wait to see it. Where do you live? Please tell me SW Florida because then I can use the same place. kristen, as part of a volunteer project (donor wall) I'm going to use thick acrylic panels that are green from the side and which look like the tempered glass I think you are talking about. I totally thought it was glass, actually. I don't know how acrylic would compare in price, but I bet the cutouts are easier to make. The link below is a company I might use for the standoffs. I don't have any other association with them, I just found them via google, but this page has close-ups that might be useful.

Having looked into Glasskote, I ended up also doing other research with local companies etc. The pricing was cheaper and it seemed easier to work with someone local to get the right color, supply, delivery etc. For other mostly aesthetic reasons, we are going with tile. I've looked at the us colorglass site before and unfortunately the nearest dealer is about 2 1/2 hours away. I do love the gallery section and the light blue tint is probably close to what I'm looking for.

I wrote the lady at Glasskote and told her that it was disappointing to me that their glass was something that only high end clients could afford.

I often get disappointed because I have champagne taste on a beer budget. I like beautiful, simple, modern things and they always seem to be the priciest. Thanks, everyone for helping me find a way to make this happen.

One other thing about Glasskote - they told me that they could give a better price to my contractor. Of course, they could not tell me what that was. I had some very weird and frustrating conversations with them.

I got on to all this glass research because I orginally saw a friend's kitchen in England who did a really striking piece of glass (bright orange) but only in the area behind the range. It was absolutely stunning. I got a quote from Glasskote for a behind the range piece that I think ran approx $900.
