Glad I checked Trex on internet before having my Taos, NM, south-facing deck replaced with it. But I'm totally confused about which way to go, not only for it but also for a full-sun-exposure observation deck on top of a carport that will be built next spring. I hate the feel of Pergo underfoot, so I'm thinking I might not like synthetic. Anyone have anything to say about TimberTech or Moisture Shield, which one blogger elsewhere recommends? Would ipe or ironwood really be better than cedar or redwood in a sometimes-snowy, sometimes-rainy low-humidity environment? We're kind of lackadaisical about maintenance, so what's a decent level that we can get away with and have the deck last 8-10 years?

After much research, we built with Correctdeck CX . That is the relatively new mold resistant version. We live on the peninsula south of San Francisco, CA, about five miles from the ocean so we get lots of moisture, even in the summer. and it does freeze in the winter. We have oak and eucalyptus trees near the deck that shed leaves (the euc. stains) and get lots of bird droppings, raccoon tracks, etc. We also get two large labs who visit. After about eight months, the deck looks great. During the summer we got black spots in a large area but realized it was from the oak. They washed off with plain water, as does everything else. The dogÂs nails do not scratch. You definitely can scratch this material (itÂs harder than other composites though) but it takes an effort. So just put pads on the bottom of your metal chairs. Some worry about the shiny surface of CX. As the website tells you, that shine all but disappears in a few months. It has a sleight sheen, about the level of satin paint. For the railings, we used the correct deck posts, then their dimensional lumber for the rails, and aluminum powder coated balusters. Our aim was minimum intrusion on the view, and it worked. We love the deck. Yes, in direct sun it can get hot but since the color is gray, less so then the previous dark wood deck. It feels wonderful under your feet. Everyone remarks on how great it looks. If we were money-heavy, we would have gotten Ipe and had people in once a year to re-stain and treat it. As it is, weÂre quite happy with the result.

We have a Fiberon Horizon deck built in Fall 2018. This summer 2022 will be its fourth. Our deck gets morning sun and late afternoon shade. We live in the Colorado foothills at 7600' elevation with big snow loads in winter, strong UV in the summer, and incredible 40- to 50-degree temperature swings in spring and fall. We chose steel framing, which helps the decking to lay nice and flat. When deciding which decking to purchase, I laid out on our existing wood deck a sample of redwood plus about 7 samples of composite and PVC decking from different manufacturers for about 2 weeks. Some definitely got hotter than others, but the Fiberon Horizon was only very slightly hotter than the existing wood deck. If I needed something on my feet to walk on the hot Fiberon decking, I would also have needed it to walk on the hot wood decking. Our deck builder uses Fiberon Horizon because it causes him fewer problems afterward, and time is money. In the end, that is the product we chose in ipe color and with walnut color at the edges of the deck for contrast, clip-type fasteners, and we LOVE it. Easy cleaning and maintenance, no warping or sagging or twisting, no delaminating, no rot, no fading even with the strong UV here in Colorado. Has held up to the snow load and is not noticeably slick when wet. Surprisingly tough and scratch resistant. So far, so good. I would make this choice again. I think it important that the material is stored properly before the build and that the installers know what they are doing.

We recently finished building our dream home in NW Wyoming which included a110' long x 14' wide x 11' high elevated deck on the east side of the house that's 140'+ long. We used Trex grooved deckboards ( 225 16 footers ). Along with Trex hidden fasteners. Just the deckboards, fasteners, and labor to install costs $22,000. It's a beautiful deck but we have one problem,it howls when the Wyoming wind blows 15 -22 miles per hour, which is a lot. After researching this extensively, we believe that this is caused by grooved deckboards and the elevation of the deck. You had a post 8 years from Jeremy in 2006 which had the same problem. We have contacted Trex and they are saying that the problem is site specific and isn't related to grooved deckboards or hidden fasteners, therefore can't aissist in materials or labor for fixing this problem. My family moved in to the new home the 1st of Aug. with our master bedroom right inside the howling fog horn sound that lasts 3-6 seconds but repeating over and over again throughout the night and day.It actually has a harmonic vibration on the deck and even inside our home. My wife says it's unbearable and cannot sleep those windy nights, it's driving us nuts. Going underneath the deck and sticking your head up between the 16" spaced joists during the howling is deafening. We believe the fix is replacing the entire deck with non grooved deckboards and screwing it down.unfortunately with no help from Trex that's going to cost another $13,000,we paid an extra $4000 to have Trex's latest and greatest hidden fastener system hiding the screw heads. If you or any of your members have any ideas for us, please reply back..We've got to fix and eliminate this nightmare, so we can enjoy our new home and save our marriage. PS I did try to e-mail.
