Weird to have different trim in bathroom than rest of the house?

We are three weeks away from our small master bath remodel. We are gutting and redoing, and I'm trying to decide whether to have the contractor salvage the current trim around the door or if it would be OK to install something different.

Currently, the entire house has the same tiered pine trim painted white around all doors, windows, and corners and a basic 4" crown moulding and 5" baseboard.

I'd prefer a craftsman style trim in the entire house, but my husband might have a heart attack if I suggest redoing all the trim. Would it look odd to have different trim in one room? You can see the room from other parts of the house, though not the door casing, just the crown moulding, which could stay the same. The new medicine cabinet also has a craftsman look which would match much better to the plan trim rather than the current style.

Well I can't say that I don't like that style of trim because it's similar to what we have in our home.
Are your other window and door trim mitered at the corners?
Do you think eventually you could redo the trim one room at a time?
I can see having something similar or some painted and some stained trim, but I'm not sure I'd want something so different in just one room of the house if the other was always going to stay the same. But I do always say it's your home, do as you want.

I would *LOVE* to redo the trim eventually, but we have SO many other projects that need to be done, it's not high on the list.

All the other trim is mitered.

I suppose it costs me nothing to just reuse the current trim and then if we ever decide to redo the trim we can do it then. I just hate to not get it done now while we're redoing the room anyway.

Hi wi-sailorgirl. Our master bathroom is quite modern and clean-lined (you commented on our vanity in another thread). The rest of the house leans a little more towards cottage-y. The exterior is (will be!) very new England-y beachy shingles, varnished craftsman fir door, onion-glass lamps. The kitchen we just did has natural-cherry shaker cabinets, marble counters, and white subway tile backsplash. The house has hardwood floors, white trim, and shaker-style 5-panel doors. So, our master bathroom is significantly more modern than the house's permanent fixtures. However... our furniture and lighting contains a lot of mid-century modern stuff, so there is a bit of continuity there. Another thing: although the bones of the bathroom are modern, we kept some cottagey things, like we continued the divided-light windows that the rest of the house has. And we continued the old-fashioned 2-part baseboard that the rest of the house has. I also added some things to soften the straight-edged modern, like a framed drawing and a soft, floral-embroidered panel as a window treatment. I defintely think you can blend cottage and modern successfully! Especially if its what YOU really want.

thanks all! our house is a multilevel (about 2000 sq ft altogether) - the 3 bedrooms and 1 bath (to be tiled) is on the top floor, then the main entry (already have beige tile) and kitchen (same beige tile) and living room (beige carpet, same as bedrooms) are on the next level. One level down is the other bathroom, hallway to garage/mudroom. Then the lowest level is the basement (carpet). So 1 bathroom pretty much sits on top of the other one. And no tiles will be adjust to another... one time i'm considering for the upstairs bathroom is the one shown on the bathroom thread (see http://www.tileliquidators.biz/jadesage.html and also see the link posted below in a real life bathroom which looks very pretty, but will only using 13x13). The other tiles i'm considering for the downstairs bathroom will be in a random pattern of squares/rectangles: http://www.tileliquidators.biz/canyonsagerandom.html or this color http://www.tileliquidators.biz/canyonmuskrandom.html (the pictures shown aren't very good - the lighting was bad and didn't show the true tile colors - yes I'd seen all 3 tiles in real life). So they are different tiles, but have some similarities (tiles had variation of colors like slate). The downtown hallway is kinda choppy so the tile person thinks it'd work better with the random pattern. Is it awful to have spindles different color than rest of trim?

It depends on how it looks. When you look at the room overall, is it obvious they are a different color? If not then just leave it. If so, then you may need to repaint. I just repainted my bedroom in a different color but left the alcoves the original color. While the undertones are different, they are so similar, that you don't really notice the difference, except that the new feels warmer than the old. So if it just looks like the rails might be in shadow or a different light, leave it.

Coming from someone (me) who's lived in a home for eight and half years (will be tomorrow anyway) that is still a construction zone (just got our real stairs installed a week and a half ago), I say if this is what you really want, then do it. It's the best way to get the change for the rest of the house on the list.

It does not have to match. Do any kind of trim you like. I love the trim in your inspiration photo. It will look fantastic in your bathroom.

I have at least 6 different trim styles in my house. Though I think one of the reason it works is that it's not just one room that is different from all the rest.

We've also been working on our house since we moved in almost 9 years ago, and we did one area at a time. My house is over 100 years old, built at a time where having nicer woodwork in some areas and something less formal in others was common.

If they are both painted white I think it would be fine. To me, it would look odd to have different kinds of trim that are both different styles and different colors--- with notable exceptions, like a paneled library, perhaps. If there is some unifying principle ( the color, for example) it would be a more subtle difference and work. I love the Craftsman trim :)

i did a much different baseboard in our master bath than the rest of our house and beefed up the window trim and door trim in the bath as well... i did carry the door trim out to the sitting room of our bedroom, but left everything else the same. i never gave it a 2nd thought and think it looks fine!

we also have different, but similar, crown moldings throughout the house.

Can you use the casing from the rest of the house on the sides of the bathroom trim, then do the top and bottom as in your inspiration photo? Then later if/when you would like to change out the trim in the rest of the house, you just cut off and replace the tops and everything would then match perfectly. Or, do the bathroom the way you want, then later cut off and replace the tops of the mitered trim and everything thing would then almost match.

I too like the craftsman look and have mitered trim, so the above approach is what we are considering doing one day. DH says he doesn't even need to pull the casing off the wall to cut off the top! Replacing trim is expensive and wasteful, and painting trim is a PITA, and this would be a good middle ground :)
