Hardware & kitchen lighting - match rest of house?

Would love your expertise, please! We are remodeling our kitchen in our 1950's California ranch home. I'm trying to take the house in a more cottage-y direction. The kitchen will have painted white shaker cabinets with dark-stained hardwood floors. We currently have oil rubbed bronze hardware (door knobs, hinges) throughout the house.

Do I need to continue the oil rubbed bronze into the kitchen? I would prefer to change to brushed/satin nickel in the kitchen. I'm not sure I want to make such a bold statement with my hardware and the dark bronze against the painted white shaker-style cabinetry will be a stronger look. We will have stainless steel appliances (fridge, dishwasher, range, hood) so the satin nickel will pick up on that.

So, for the 2 pendants over the island and the 1 flushmount fixture in the kitchen, should I match the kitchen hardware or the hardware in the rest of the house? I'm also facing the same dilemma in the newly added laundry/mudroom.

You don't need to match the appliances -or- the predominant finish for the door hardware with the kitchen cabinet hardware or all the lighting fixtures.

Do what you like best with the cabinets.

There has been lots of threads on this recently. It's not necessary to match the whole house. It's sometimes not even necessary to match hardware to lighting if done properly. I am doing shaker white cabinets also in my remdodel with stainless appliances and polished nickel cabinet hardware and faucet. The hardware in the pendant lights above my penninsula will be black. My penninsula chairs and kitchen chairs are also black, so it will will all tie together and allow for a little pop of style and contrast with the lighting without it looking misplaced. If you look at inspiration pictures on houzz.com you'll see lots of island lighting that does not coordinate with the cabinet hardware. Have fun with it and go with what you love!

This type of question comes up a lot. You can search and find out what others were told. It seems it is just a matter of taste... everyone is different. I am in the OCD camp where everything has to match. Thus, my house is ORB EVERYWHERE. (It is a new build, so... it wasn't hard to achieve.) I remember being a kid and walking thru houses...... when the metal finishes didn't match, it really bothered me. I have no idea where I got that preference (our kitchen growing up was nothing spectacular....) :) I suppose it is up to you and your taste.... do you want everything to match? does it bother you when they don't match?

I'm having a similar dilemma only it's regarding having lower and upper cabs all the same color, but the upper cabs will have black hardware while the lowers will have polished nickel! Now is that crazy or what?! The upper cabinets (and on the other walls too) are hundred-year-old cabs which are multi-paneled and have little multi-bevels around each panel. The lower ones are brand new with only one panel each and simple shaker style - so not matching except for in color and in being framed and inset/flush as the uppers are. But to change out all the original black hardware (or old, if not original) would be too costly right now. So I'm hoping that having them be different is okay. I want PN on the lowers because it looks so beautiful w/ the gray-green color I'm doing all the cabs in (based on my inspiration photo). I'm telling myself that because my lower cabs have feet where it bumps out in the center (about 6 or 7 feet in width), that I can pretend it's furniture and therefor has the right to be different. But I won't know till it's all done, and yes I'm probably going to ask Garden Web's members for their .02 on the matter, too! ;) If it looks horrible I guess I'll just change either the uppers or lowers out and lose that money. So my long-winded point is that yes, I think you can and should have your island hardware be different! And I think that while the faucet et al is like a T-shirt, it will still go nicely together, if only sub-consciously. Do I mean sub-consciously, or do I mean unconsciously? Well you get the idea!

Another vote for consistent flooring. It will help make your home feel more cohesive, like it was planned that way, not done after-the-fact. Do the two woods touch? How will you handle the transition? Even if it's the same type of wood, you may need to feather it in. BTW, what type of floor is it? Maybe the existing flooring can be refinished to give you more of a look you want. (some woods refinish better than others). FWIW, the "property brothers" say if you can stand anywhere in your home and see three types of flooring, you've done something wrong. Just their 2 cents...

Thank you all! I’ll send some photos.the existing floors are engineered. The herringbone is a great idea. I have a sample...it’s actually been difficult to find a herringbone or chevron in a close color to the existing floors so I have a black sample. I’ll send a photo of that as well to get your opinion. I’m leaning towards that option. Underneath the carpet is just the concrete, etc. I was hoping to find something amazing but to no avail.
