Shopping suggestions in West Palm Bch?

I may be taking a short trip to West Palm Beach soon. I'll have about one day to shop, so I'm wondering if anyone here is famliar with shopping in that area and what places you would suggest. I love MCM and vintage but also shop retail if a place has unusual and beautiful decorative items.

Any recommendations of favorite shops, places known only to the locals, thrift or vintage stores with MCM items, or antique stores where you can find a good bargain would be appreciated. Thanks!

If you're going to West Palm Beach, you need to visit Worth Avenue (in Palm Beach). Can't promise any bargins, but its a great area to browse.

In a day you can cover City Place, Clematis and Worth Ave in Palm Beach. They are all within minutes of each other. It's already getting real HOT. Wear comfortable shoes and cloths that do not show sweat marks. Keep travel baby wipes & travel deodorant in your purse for quick refreshers if you want to dine later in a nicer restaurant. Don't wear pants or you will die. A little further south is Antique Row which used to be great but is not so great now. Still if you had an extra day to kill you never know if you might get lucky looking through the junk. I would start at City Place and then walk to Clematis. From there you used to be able to take a water taxis across to Palm Beach. However, the off season is coming so I'm not sure about the boat.

There is a nice looking trachycarpus fortunei 8 to 10 feet tall on the corner of caldwell mill road and mountain view parkway (between Spain Park and Valleydale Road). It's on the right side of mountain view parkway in the front yard of the house behind the Altadena South Sign and looks very happy to be there. The are two Sabal Palms on 280 in Chelsea at the entrance to a self-storage business. They are large trees, but one of them looks stressed.

A/C Condensate - catch it in a bucket or use flex tube to direct the flow. Your neighbors condensate also? One drought year in Pompano I hooked my washing machine output to drain into a young heliconia bed. It kept them alive! I have used All Free & Clear for years FWIW. My FIL says his Aunt has the best banana crop around because her kitchen sink drain is directed out the wall and into the banana bed. I've read recently to keep a 5 gallon bucket in the kitchen and dump any and all liquid you can into it. I'm no expert, but it seems that whacking the shrubs back would do them more harm than good right now. Maybe providing some shade for them? Large palm fronds or shade cloth? Seminole County is not nearly as hard hit as Broward and Palm Beach, yet driving around you can see too many dead trees. Dead native oak trees. Sad. We have an irrigation system in the front, I recently worked on it to concentrate as much water as I can into my veggie beds, so I can use my watering day to the max on what I care most about. The yard is a blend of tough stuff and can hang by itself. Houston, TX has been having a hard time. You might bounce in the TX forum and see if you can find any hints. It continues to amaze me that HOA are allowed to refuse people to keep rain barrels in their yards. This is Florida, it has to rain sometime doesn't it??? Oh, and assuming that it must rain again sometime, you might want to read up on rain gardens. Essentially directing the flow of water from your roof into areas in your yard where it will sink in and do the most good. Or, reduce runoff. Texas again has some really good resources on rain gardening and rain harvesting in general. ~dianne

Its sad to see so many landscapers with so little knowledge around here. Im glad that Southern Magnolias and Crape Myrtles are finally used a lot around here, but about 10 years ago I saw a wealthy community with lots of palms right near me. But there was a problem. First, they used hurricane cut sabal palmettos and Butias which is something that you cannot get away with growing without protection until about Virginia Beach. And second, they planted them in September! Maybe they would of put up a good fight if they were at least planted in the spring, but they were dead by New Years. I am seeing some people plant windmill palms now which is great to see (a few are surviving the winter too!), but I have yet to see one nice sized needle palm! I really doubt that a large needle palm would have a problem in our winters, and if you plant them close the south side of a home, they would probably really thrive! -Alex

Today we ventured to the Salvation Army in Ft. Lauderdale. Although there were people actually waiting and watching as a truck was offloaded with furniture, there were no finds there. We hurried out. Then off to my favorite place. I wish I lived here so this could be my favorite store...Circa Who I know it was wrong, but I fell in love with a crescent shaped desk, painted aqua, with 4 elephant heads as the legs. Marble top. Oh, it would have looked great with my white patent leather wing back and white shag rug. It was a little over my budget at $4600, plus the shipping so I wished it a nice life and moved along. But they did have the most fabulous selection of stuff I have ever seen. Tomorrow the conference starts, so I might head out in the morning to Boca Bargoons to check out the fabric while my dh goes to the meetings and then off to the beach. Mitch, what is the deal with the drivers around here? I've never seen so many people just pull out into traffic from shopping centers or side streets, and not get in the right lane, but all the way over into the left, while almost side swiping the people in the turn lane. I mean I know the motto is "sit low drive slow" with the state flag having a steering wheel with 2 hands on it (kidding of course--old Jerry Seinfeld joke) but yikes! We almost slammed into a woman yesterday who just decided to pull out in front of us on Rt 1. Luckily the antilock brakes worked well and we skidded to a stop about a foot from her car. Then she actually rolled down her window as if to yell at us. But I told my dh perhaps she wanted to apologize... He just waved her on. I have to say that it is very difficult to be on "vacation" while our friends in Boston and all over are so sad about Boston. I'm hoping Marcolo, bostonpam, and all the others up there are ok.

P.S If you go to Clematis you might want to ask or check the side streets near. There used to be a great thrift store on Olive ave. Sometimes you come across some cool little art shops. I don't have one to recomend as they seem to have a short life span. The slow summers can be brutal on small businesses. The best deals around here are after mothers day when all the snow birds go home and a bit past sept. That's our off season.

Having grown up in WPB and attended college there, I was ready to jump on this post but you all have done a good job covering it!

Then there is a HD Forum member who currently lives there and could add to the suggestions if she sees this post.
