I don't know the geography of NY very well but have you looked at Room and Board? They have a store in NYC, can also order online but I think their shipping costs are high.

Other ideas: Pottery Barn, West Elm, Crate and Barrel. Just thinking about where I have seen espresso wood.

My neighbor ordered stools from Room and Board. She ordered just one first, to make sure she liked it and it was comfortable (so if she had to return it -- it was only one and not four stools!). She was happy with it, so she ordered the rest.

Ditto on the places sueb20 suggested. Luckily most are within driving distance of Rockland!

We ended up ordering our counter stools online. It was the only place I could find that had ours in leather. We ran down to the Design Within Reach (?) outlet in Seacaucus, NJ to check them out in wood before ordering them, figuring, if they were comfortable in wood, they'd likely be even more so in leather.

Only other places I can think of would be Restoration Hardware, Signature Leather on rte 17, or Jensen Lewis (?) and Desiron, in the city. There are other places in the city (esp SoHo area) but don't know names or locations.

We ordered ours from overstock.com. We bought one to make sure we liked them and we did, so ordered the rest.

We did go with swivel seats and are glad we did as its easier to get in and out and saves wear on the floor with less sliding.

artefac.com has good selection and reasonable search features. If you can make it to Buffalo (or Toronto) they have small showrooms where you can see, touch, and sit on stools/chairs to determine comfort.

Ballard Designs doesn't appear to have any stores in that region, but the website has some pretty stools! Way out of my budget...but fun to look at.

For what you are describing you might want to look at Holsag barstools...good bang for your buck! The barstools are commercial grade European beech construction, come in 7 different heights, choice of brass or chrome or no footrests, they have 28 different finishes and 90 seat fabric or vinyl choices. The delivery for me was faster than promised. I used this brand at my high top breakfast nook table and they were indestructible while my sons were living at home. The other great thing is that the stain goes into the wood like it should. I looked at many a barstool where I could scrape off the finish with my finger nail. These stools look a 1000 times better in person than they look on web sites, in person you can see the quality and feel the weight.

Note: There is a huge difference in prices on these stools from site to site. If you see a style you like do a search of the chair name,make sure it's a Holsag though.

I just bought 4 Pottery Barn Napoleon bar stools - all for $120 total. They came from a beautiful home that was being redecorated, and are in perfect condition.
