my advice would be to call up a local septic company and explaint eh area you are considering and ask what the general requirements are there. they probably do enough work inthe area to give you a general idea. in my area the dept of health has to tell you what you require. you give them the house plans and they tell you your minimum sizes for tank, field, etc. you cannot get a system installed without their approval, and it MUST go inteh approved location or you have to get a new approval. my house has 2 septics. the one for the baths is in the side and front lawn, the one for teh kitchen and laundry is in the other side yard. since i have the room, mine re both single pipe pretty much run straight out. but in smaller locations you can install multiple pipes. for instance, if the tests say you need 100 ft of line, then you run 4 lines 25 ft each side by side with 4-5 ft between them.

Anyone have experience with a UV System? This one in particular is being recommended by a PB: http://www.tridentuv.com How much of an upgrade is this? Will we really save chemicals long term? We are located in DFW, TX. Looking at a 18x34 volleyball / play pool. Not sure of the pool finish yet. Any feedback is appreciated.

A properly balanced pool will not smell. If you smell chlorine, it's fought something and a complete chem check is called for, especially free chlorine, combined chlorine, and cya. Something has happened and the pool is telling you it's sick. UV Ozone is different than straight UV. Straight UV is a specific light wave length generator disables a pathogen's ability to reproduce. UV Ozone generation creates ozone(O3) gas, a highly reactive and effective oxidizer that also can kill most pathogens. Both may reduce a system's chlorine demand, but neither is particularly cost effective with residential pools and neither will do anything in the main body of water where the vast majority of a pool's chlorine demand is needed and used. Both are only effective at the equipment pad. They can only supplement a sanitizer such as chlorine. Scott

Hi, Ridge48: Yeah, this is one of those things you probably don't see on your neighbor's average pool, so there has to be a bit of faith going into this in addition to what you read. That's why I value any experienced input we can get from others on this site. I don't know that the UV systems can't do what they say, but as Racket points out you will still have to use some other sanitizer like chlorine with the goal to reduce in quantity (cost) and it's harmful by products. So far, I haven't seen real negatives (other than how well it actually might work) like the staining issue with ionizers or health issues with some types of Ozone. Here are some company product links for UV pool units. I have contacted some of these companies myself for more information and spoken by phone with others. But again, I still need to get a pool built, so I have time to figure this one out. I just wanted to know what not to buy upfront so that I don't overspend now on a product I don't think I will want later. I will definitely start out with a basic chlorine feeder type system and then will consider adding a UV unit perhaps as mentioned above. I think I have ruled out SWG from consideration but the cost will probably be similar for the UV.
