Ideas to level area for patio

Hi,

At the end of our gravel driveway we have a 14'x14' "makshift patio." It's basically the gravel from the driveway, surrounded by big boulders. The patio slopes down on one end and we want to make it level. But we don't want to spend a fortune getting a contractor to level it, press it, and then add pavers on top. It's a vacation home and we want to keep it as "nature-focused" as possible. Any ideas on INEXPENSIVE ways to level get it level? I've tried just moving around the gravel, but there just isn't enough of it. The slope isn't huge, but because it spans 14', it makes for an arduous process.

I don't know what delivery of stone is to your property or if you have access to a trailer but my choice would be to lay down 2" of pea gravel and rake it out. Pea stone is very natural looking and is comfortable under foot. If raking out that area is a bit much for you I believe any neighbour with a strong teen would love to make a few dollars. For a young fellow or gal it should take no more than 2 hours to do. Double that would give them plenty of time to spread it, rake and level and tamp it by hand. I would have no problem paying $50.00 and a lunch for them. A yard of pea gravel here is $125.00 delivered, however the quarry is only a 20 minute drive. A hand tamper is $20.00 a day to rent.

can you post a pic? Without seeing what you're dealing with, it'd be irresponsible to offer a solution.

along the lines of the above, for an additional $50 or so you can rent a gas-powered plate compactor or a jumping jack. In 20 years in the business the only person I've ever seen get anything resembling decent compaction from a hand tamper was a 300 lb powerlifting firefighter who worked on our crew part time. Otherwise a hand compactor is great exercise but you're accomplishing very little actual compaction.

Hi! Ok, I DID want a gravel patio until I was reading more about it here... :) Right now, this is what we have: a wooden "patio" which is about 4x6' and is coming out ASAP. This thing is set directly on the ground and we are having an issue with water coming in under our back door and into the house. Part of this will be solved when we unclog the french drain that exists (we just moved in on Thursday into this house). Another part will hopefully be solved when we dig another french drain against the foundation and maybe even put in a dry well. Apparantly, the builders who built this house cut through a spring in the hill 8 feet from our house and when it rains, water is abundant. Our "backyard" (on our house level-- we have 2 higher terraces) is a mini-swamp. We're actually about 10 feet above the street so diverting the flow to the front is the obvious solution to the water issue. My question is, when we go to replace our patio (we do want something there), will the normal methods be ok? digging down and setting up a base of sand or whatever, then putting pavers or stone on top? We are 6b, but the average low here is 9*F and we rarely stay frozen for more than 2 days in a row or even during the day. There isn't much frost-heave since we don't freeze that hard. Of course I am considering the fact this area will be wetter than the normal ground. There is also no top soil in our backyard-- it's all sub soil. There is that horrid creeping grass on top of the sub soil, so that means that this area must not flood all the time or else it would not survive. I would also like to use something "breathable" so water can evaporate from either through or between the pavers. I am thiking through the pavers is not a possibility because that would mean the material would break down in the free/thaw process. I was thinking about putting sand or small gravel (like pea gravel) inbetween the pavers. Any other ideas? Thanks!

I am having the same problem. I had to lay out the stones tonight to see what I had to work with and ended up with a rectangle shape that is coming out nicely but now I don't know what I am supposed to do. I guess mark it then dig around the outline then take the flagstones off, dig deeper on the higher ground than the lower ground, pour sand in and start the layout process all over again. I plan to grow moss between the cracks. I even bought some Irish Moss at the Home Depot and it's gorgeous. Any suggestions on leveling besides what's on here? on_greenthumb, your firepit area is lovely. I really like that. I love the idea of a rubble patio, and perhaps can use that as the center of ours (which we hope to put in late summer or early fall). However it has to be flat (unlike my walkway of broken concrete: each source comes with a different thickness) for my Mom and my pal (who is blind) to navigate more easily than the front walk (which I will need to get laid flatter, eventually). I think if you plan on using really heavily weighted items like a stone fireplace, grill island, sink etc. you need at least some of the area poured. We plan on having a "primitive" kitchen (mostly cement items) around the edges, so we need stability: we also need a footer for a knee wall around the edge to keep any flooding waters off the patio and kitchen area. That said, I really want to keep things as do-it-yourself as possible. I have fun doing projects like hosenemesis patio area - and enjoy the feeling of a job well accomplished! on_greenthumb's area would be a nice "landing" for a hammock. Someone gave me a hammock last fall, and once we get some backyard happening, I'd like to find a place for DH to snuggle down into the garden and relax...

Thank you both.

I have attached a picture. Right now, we basically put rocks around the perimeter, but the stones inside are the same as what is all overa our stone driveway. All the orange are dead leaves that I have to clean out :).

I don't know how I double posted at 4:17 PM I wasn't even home!!!!!

Good point about the hand tamper Marcinde, I didn't mention the gas tamper because it's not for a first timer without good instruction and experienced supervision, not a toy.

I don't want to be too critical here but that patio isn't really a patio, it's a space with some furniture on it. I would get rid of the rock perimeter, they really aren't boulders. To me it's a tripping hazard and doesn't really serve a purpose. I might suggest you go online or to a big box store and get some design ideas for a patio for a natural setting and develop a plan before you do anything. A good design here really won't break the bank. My wife is an interior decorator but has some unique ideas here at our lakeside cottage. I'll show her and we will she if she has a suggestion for you.
