Seeking Words of Wisdom for Wrapping a Wooden Porch Post Column

Have a three year old mahogany deck that we put down after a contractor framed the area. Finished with Penofin and it looks simply great!

The still very sound but old pine 4x6 posts (columns), which are not pressure treated, need to be wrapped because of typical age related weathering/cracking etc.

Was thinking of using MDF, clear pine or clear poplar. And some horizontal ornate molding that will blend with the rest of the 1870's house.

Looked online, and didn't see details about framing around a post column, for wood anyways.

For instance, should there be a gap in the material under the base molding to prevent wicking of water?

Materials advice and installation tips would be appreciated.
