I think the attempt at a colonial look just does not mesh with the organic modern look it also had. I know it was done often as well as with the Spanish look (stucco, beams, etc...), but I just don't care for it. I think you could bring it forward into a more 70s natural look. Keep the ceiling and the slate floor, and try to work in clean elements and curves. Using raised panel doors and those hinges just did not look great when new, so to recreate would be period appropriate, but a mistake. I think a retro modern kitchen and vibe would make the most sense. Like noted above, you can use regular cabs under a curved counter. I could see it looking groovy with vertical grain veneer cabs, some retro color accessories and modern art. You can do an older style in a fresh way. There is no need to be a slave to someone else's vision for it, whether the original owner/architect, or some future buyer. If you added curves to your pix from 15:42 today, that would be quite nice. I am not sure you should whitewash your wood, but it is not a bad option. I would hate to see it get painted though. The workmanship and lines of it are really nice and that would sully it. I don't see too many painted surfaces as working in your house. I can picture grass cloth wallpaper and maybe some white walls. Certainly, you should skip crown molding.... Some funky table lamps in chrome would fit in as would some plants and macrame. I'd try to go for an ahead of its time look from years ago....

I agree that in order for the house to look welcoming, the way to the front door must appear visible. There needs to be a spacious landing the full width of the porch. The walk needs to be least 4' wide, and 5' is OK. Walks can be widened and decorated at the same time by adding a border of brick (an 8" strip) running along each side. (If the walk is too close to the home, I would not add a strip of brick on the side that makes it even closer.) If there is too much to be changed, it might be better to demolish the old walk and create a new one. I would not run a second walk straight out unless there is NEED for it. As far as making the scene look cozy, there needs to be no spaces that should be filled with plants, left empty. The obvious one is along the wall with two windows. There should be some shrubs growing below the windows. The next place is below the purple-leaved tree. A circular bed of groundcover would enhance the scene. If we had a wider view, we might see something similar is needed at the right half of the yard. Achieving coziness is not helped by letting things become untidy. The lower branches on the trees are impeding the view of the house and the canopies need to be lifted and tidied up. I think the house would become very plain looking without the shutters. They're an important trim piece. With modern windows, we all know no one actually uses shutters for storms, and that they're just decorative. So they don't need to close -- or even look like it -- in order to be valid.

Your roof should overhang your porch floor. From personal experience, unless you are pouring a concrete/cement porch floor, you really do want treated deck boards (thicker 1x6 w/rounded edges) used for your porch floor. You will want the ends of each board against your house and the other end at the front edge of the porch. You do not want board flooring running parallel to and beginning against the house because rain will, inevitably, blow onto the porch. Leaving a tiny bit of space between the boards of the floor (and having the ground beneath the floor sloped away from the house) will enable water to drain off a level porch floor more quickly not only making the porch last longer but also decreasing the slip/fall hazard of a wet porch. .If you are using wood boards, pay attention to which way any board may be trying to cup as water that lands on a deck and/or blows onto a porch can end up standing in a board if it is lower in the middle than on each side. That also makes it more difficult to clean. Using 8' deck boards usually being more space for dollar cost effective (less labor than cutting a twelve foot board in half) is only one reason why a porch should have an 8' floor. The more important reason is that if you really want your family to be able to sit on the porch and enjoy doing so, you need room for people to be able to easily walk the full length of the porch with chairs on it and you don't want everyone sitting in a chair with its back against the wall awkwardly lined up like a shooting gallery. Some people will want to create conversation areas and that will require chairs be across from one another with room to walk between them --unless you intend for your porch rail to be a bench seat. Beth, Georgian does not equate to Mansion... I am not trying to be rude but I felt like you came for me and tried to throw some shade. Georgian houses were typically built in the colonial era of the Americas. They can range in size from a cottage/shack to a mansion, like some of those you depicted. I posted pictures of colonial Georgian homes that had inspired my design for my house so you should have seen that there were examples of small Georgian homes. Like one of the gentlemen who commented earlier in the thread, it can also be called a cape cod style house. These homes are usually brick or wood sided and feature shutters and columns. The first picture I posted of the ornate column was just an example of the wraparound feature I was looking for, I was not saying that I wanted that column specifically or anything within that realm. I know that that is way too ornate for my house and Georgian homes don't typically have crazy columns like that. They're usually the classical smooth columns. I was just wondering if anyone knew where I could find the wraparound ones. I understand that you're a "PRO" but just because you paid or had yourself verified as a home business person doesn't mean that you know everything about houses and styles. Literally, every example you've posted of Georgian houses have been mansions or very large homes. I realize that the White House is Georgian. I acknowledge there is no way for me to turn my existing home into a Georgian mansion, however, I can turn it into a Georgian style cottage. There have already been numerous photos posted of small Georgian houses so your opinion about it is superfluous. Thank you Katie B. for your input and those photos. You are right that I do not care that shutters do not actually cover the windows. That is not the purpose for me. I don't live on the East Coast or in the tropics or near any coast for that matter that I have to worry about a hurricane or tropical storm winds doing damage to my windows and I would never use them even if they were functional. I don't live in "Tornado Alley" either. As a matter of fact, I live in Southern California, in the southeastern edge of the state where I have Az to my east and Mexico to my south. I'm right on the border and the state line basically. In other words, the only weather I have to worry about here is the heat so my small shutters are the kind that are just for decorative purposes.
