Replacing Rotting Column 'Wrap'

We have four columns about 16 feet tall in front of our Colonial house in Massachusetts. We believe that the supporting columns are metal and that the wood surrounding the column are just fascia board. Since the columns rest on a concrete slab and water splashing up from rain has rotted one of the columns. We would like to replace the bottom molding and twelve inches of fascia that the remainder of the column seems to rest on. I have a couple of questions. First, any thoughts on how this would might be stabilized (i.e., does it just rest on the concrete or should we build a box around the metal pole). Second, can we just prop up the top part of the column wrap with a 2x4 while we work. Lastly, what should we do to seal this to prevent further damage.

Thanks for any thoughts and advice.
