Any rug experts here?

I've been looking for an oriental rug for my living room for some time. Finally found one that I really liked on Craigslist. The guy who sold it to me does a lot of buying and selling of antiques. He thought it was machine made, but I am not sure. The stitching on the back doesn't look completely uniform, but it is sharp overall. The fringe also seems integral to the rug, not added later.
What I love about it most is the subtle koi fish design along the borders. That, and the price ($150) It is 9x12 in size.

I remember when my children were small, I think 1, 2 and 7. We went into Bellingham for the day. Crossing into the US we were stopped and the car searched. No luggage. Three kids........... Looked suspicious. I told them my parents lived in Abbotsford and that's where our belongings were. On the way back into Canada, the Canadian border crossing agent asked who the kids were. I panicked. I had NO proof whatsoever any of them were mine! And I never got written permission from my ex to bring my son out of province, let alone out of the country. I had no way to do that anyhow, as he ran for the hills when he found out who I was going out with...... It was weird how both the US customs and Canadian customs took our word the kids were all ours without proof. That would never happen today.

My opinion on Ruggable: my daughter bought one 18 mos ago (8x10/light gray). She has baby, toddler, dog and 2 messy, red wine spilling adults (lol) (oh, and sometimes messy me visiting). She has washed that rug countless times, both by spot cleaning and washing machine. It comes out great. I loved the idea of one myself but needed a 9x12 and at time they did not offer it. Now they do (you just have to check to see if your washer accommodates the size) & I bought a cream/white one. I LOVE it. Me and Messy Marvin here + 2 dogs and visiting grandkids, granddog, and messy adults have given my ruggable a workout. Spot cleaning for me has been a breeze-have not had to throw the entire thing in wash yet but I anticipate no problems based upon daughter's experience. (truly just about everything has been spilled, spewed, painted, chalked, thrown on these rugs and no problems washing clean, no staining). In case you are wondering about real life hard workout for this brand.

When coir is used in most greenhouse/nursery operations it makes up <10% of the total volume of the grow medium, and is used primarily in bottom watering applications like ebb and flow. In large part, that is because it loses its loft very quickly and compacts severely when top-watered. Coir also has chemical properties that vary significantly enough from peat that it would be unwise to believe that coir can serve as an exact substitute for sphagnum peat w/o having appropriate work-arounds in place that take into account both the physical and chemical differences between the two. Coir is also known to be allelopathic to a notable % of plants, though I can't say with any certainty if almond trees are on the list of plants affected allelopathically by coconut hull products. Most plants I've tried to grow in media comprised of large fractions of coir/ CHCs were not at all cooperative and fared poorly. There isn't enough information to make a diagnosis with any degree of certainty, but odds would suggest that you are up against one of the fungal pathogens often gathered under the umbrella of damping-off diseases; or, compaction of the coir fibers has created an hypoxic root environment favored by fungi that thrive in anaerobic conditions. It's highly likely the seeds that have split into 2 cotyledons are perfectly viable. They can be planted in river sand which has been screened over a 2mm screen to eliminate the finest material. I'm so good! That's what I tell my family when I figure something out. Right after I did this topic I ordered a 3 pack of white vinyl erasers before reading the replies. :) Z, I saw those and thought how cool they are! It may be a gift for next Christmas. Cyn, when drawing you have to be specific on what type of pencil is needed. There are charcoal pencils, colored pencils, even liquid graphite pencils. Also there are different strengths of graphite for different projects. My dad (along with DS) was a civil engineer and I'd find green drafting pencils (wood) on his desk and swipe one. Wish I'd kept just one pencil. I'm good on pencil recommendations via all the money we paid for DS's tuition. 😊

Not an expert, but I would jump on that deal for $150. Beautiful rug! I would love to find a deal like that for my DR.

Before you all think I am such a savvy shopper, here is a picture of the other rug I bought from that guy. It is machine made and about 9.5 x 12.5. He was asking 350, sold it to me for 325. Yes, I paid more than twice as much for a lesser quality rug. But it is cushy, it matched well, and that room gets very cold here in upstate New York. No tag on that one either.

Jo, I think $325 is a bargain on the red rug too! It's beautiful!

I've bought 3 rugs from Craigslist sellers (just picked up the latest one this past Friday evening), and it's amazing what good deals one can find on rugs there if patient enough!

Snookums, I found the rugs on CL Syracuse. We get a lot of great stuff, but a lot of junk too.

The backs of handmade rugs can be quite sharp. Notice some of the wavy red lines on the back. Machine-made rugs will likely have much straighter lines.

I once asked my cousin, who was stationed in Saudi Arabia and had bought some beautiful rugs while there, if a hand-made rug I was buying here was worth the asking price. I loved the rug. He replied that buying a rug was an emotional experience and only I could know. He was right. That was 25 years ago, and I still have a twinge of pleasure every time I look at the rug.
