I had some similar to these - I noticed on this website that you can buy separate cord covers.

My husband hated them. He said he felt like he was at a hotel. I got rid of them when I got a new four-poster bed.

Lamps plus has a lot that come with cord covers, plus cord covers that are sold separately. I went to the site and did a search on 'cord cover' and got all these pages:

We had swing-arm wall lamps by our bed, and loved them. Only reason they went away was they are brass, and I was going in a different direction with the metal finishes in the room when we redecorated.

However, they live on, one by each of our sons' beds for reading. They also each have one over their dressers, a throwback to baby days when they were over the changing table.

We totally love our swing-arm lamps (they're more modern) -- we had them hardwired into the wall when we remodeled. If I'd known how much I'd love them (light on my book, tiltable), I would have just put some up before the remodel and used the cord cover. For me, I stay up reading after DH goes to bed, so they're completely perfect, in that I can dim them completely, move them closer or farther from the bed, and angle the light so it hits precisely on the book.
And the space they make on the bedside table is just wonderful, as we tend to use our bedside tables for books. If you're not hardwiring them, just go ahead and put them up and see what you think. You can always take them down. The cord covers are paintable, too, so they'll pretty much disappear, and I've seen them used in higher-end designs, even, rather than hardwiring the fixtures in.

sorry, forgot link...they're like these, but were less expensive and cleaner-lined. But they're more modern than many - I just loved the functionality of them rather than just one dimension of swing. I see that satin nickel cord covers are sold -- for me, I would probably prefer a paintable cord cover rather than have a metal line running up and down. But that look could work as well, in a different space.
