The reduced contrast, lighter colors and simple window treatments really do keep those rooms from looking as oppressive as other heavily layered interiors we've seen, don't they?

Deee--I think architecture is always there, it just isn't always appealing. Whether you have arches or doorways, trim or no trim on your windows, crown molding or not, built-ins or a fireplace or plain square rooms, there is an architecture to a space. The question is, do you like the architecture of a given space/room? A minimalist might remove crown moldings and window trim and make the walls as blank a slate as possible. A traditionalist might add crown moldings and beef up the baseboards and rip out carpeting to install hardwoods. I've moved a lot, first as a miltary brat and then because my job requires it. The houses and apartments I am drawn to have more traditional bones--older homes with crown molding and carved banisters and wainscoting. The places I don't like as much have a more modern architecture, with no trim on the windows, no crown molding, thin little baseboards, plain doors, etc. To some extent, you can change the architecture of a space. But I once saw a "modern" 1960's ranch decked out in Victorian frills and it simply didn't work. The windows were wrong. The layout of the house was wrong. Even though the owners had added some trim and molding, the house and the decor clashed. To answer the OP's question, I think that, yes, you can have a lightly-layered, non-modern style. But it will take vision and effort to achieve. Take a look over at Apartment Therapy. They are running their Small, Cool contest right now and there are entries from lots of people who have furnished their homes without the help of a designer. Many of the homes and apartments tend towards modern or minimalist design, but they are lightly layered spaces that, in most cases, do seem finished. And warm and welcoming, which minimalist spaces don't always achieve. And there are some more traditional spaces in the entries.

I found this first recipe at Recipelink.com. The second one is from Cooks.com, but seems to be missing directions for the second step. In that recipe, the cranberry layer had pecans and crushed pineapple so maybe that is the one you remembered with the added "crunch" Cranberry Chicken Salad (from recipelink.com) FIRST LAYER 1 envelope unflavored gelatin 1/2 c. cold water 1 can condensed cream of chicken soup 1/4 c. mayonnaise 1 tbsp. lemon juice 1 c. diced cooked chicken 1/4 c. chopped celery 1 tbsp. chopped onion Pepper to taste SECOND LAYER 1 envelope unflavored gelatin 1/2 c. cold water 1 lb. can jellied cranberry sauce Method: First layer: Sprinkle gelatin on cold water to soften. Place over low heat; stir until gelatin is dissolved. Remove from heat. Blend soup, mayonnaise, and lemon juice; stir in gelatin. Chill until mixture begins to thicken. Fold in remaining ingredients. Pour into 1 1/2 quart mold. Chill until almost firm. Second layer: Sprinkle gelatin on cold water to soften. Place over low heat; stir until gelatin is dissolved. Remove from heat. Crush cranberry sauce with fork; add gelatin. Chill until mixture begins to thicken. Pour on top of chicken layer. Chill until firm. Unmold. Serve on crisp lettuce. Serves 6 to 8. CHICKEN CRANBERRY SALAD Printed from COOKS.COM 2 env. Knox gelatin 2 cans whole berry cranberry sauce 2 (8 oz.) cans crushed pineapple 2/3 c. chopped pecans 2 tbsp. fresh lemon juice SECOND LAYER: 2 env. Knox gelatin 2 c. Hellmann's real mayonnaise 6 tbsp. fresh lemon juice 4 c. cooked, diced white chicken meat 2 c. finely chopped celery 4 tbsp. chopped parsley Mix all ingredients in layer 1 together and pour into a 9x13 pan and chill until firm. (here is where there must be some missing directions. Maybe the chicken layer is placed on top of the cranberry layer and then inverted on a platter after chilling. No other directions are given)

Does this Karndean Van Gogh LVP texture layer look smudgy to you?

Hello ishop19, We've successfully installed the Van Gogh line in many homes, and have never come across the point of the "texture" looking like smudges. I do see what you're referring to in your photos, and I'd have to say that it must part of the top layers' added "texture." It's definitely not a mallet mark. Mallet marks do make distinct marks, (and not generally needed for LVT installation, we time the adhesive to optimal tack, and use weighted rollers) but can easily be removed from vinyl. I would agree with picking up one box, and staggering the seams in an area of your home, just to lay it out a bit ( so you can see how the light hits the flooring on a larger scale). If you still see the "smudges" that you're referring to, and wiping it down with windex doesn't remove them, than I'd say that it's, without a doubt, part of the graining texture pattern. Remember, you did bring home a floor sample, so who knows what those planks have been through. Karndean makes some really beautiful products, and I'm sure that if this particular color will "drive you nuts," you'll be able to find a nice alternative. Good Luck The Flooring Blog

Four Euro pillows and two oblong sausage pillows ( 12 by 24 or so). No tiny pillows. Three of the Euro pillows go behind your king sleeping pillows. Plop the other three pillows in front. You can either arrange them to look random, then take a photo to remind yourself what to do or you can close your eyes and throw the three pillows on the bed. Keep in mind that department store displays of beds are often rearranged by small children while parents shop.

Love the lighting, love the rooms, it's one HUGE garage sale away from being livable.

I don't care if they call it "layering", it's clutter. How can you LIVE in a place when you have to move three things to set down a book and a drink?

Yum, love it. The house is gorgeous by itself and then all of those interesting things are put together. I could move right in and be happy for quite a while.

I also think it all looks a bit cluttered. I like a more minimalist approach. I'd use about 50% of what they have in there. But I do like those beautiful windows and the woodwork in the house!

Its not cluttered. I am sure some of those extra things on tables are for the photoshoot. I doubt they keep a hat and a bowl of fruit just "so".

If drinking is one of their important activities too, I am sure they have a large coaster collection, its just not featured.

I love it! Sure, it's more cluttered than I like but I definitely see the allure. The way in which the space is used, from floor to ceiling is especially noteworthy.

I love it too. I am not a fan of the truly cluttered, overly layered look, but I wouldn't put this house in that category. Love the colors.

Some backstory - the house was half of a salvaged hse that was saved & trucked 65 miles to its present location in GA.

Additions were added, and everything was completed in 18 months.

The owner has 40 peacocks.

Speaking of the owner...he's 90!

Wow, very pretty house, not all the decor is in my taste but boy some of the furniture pieces are gorgeous. I love houses with history like that. Thanks for sharing.

I think a little weeding out wouldn't hurt, but it is lovely even as it is. The belonging are all nice, I'd just use fewer of them out on display and rotate a little.
I love the round front chest and funky chairs in the 2nd bdrm pic!

I really like this! Isn't it great that we don't all have to like the same thing. I have an identical twin sister who likes the "less is more" idea, where my thoughts are often "more is better" Fun!

That is EXACTLY the level of layering I love. Thank you for posting...I'm going to have to guy the mag now lol.

I like more color but given the owner does not likely have a five year old with chocolate fingers, I get why he can enjoy that serenity without worry :).

This wino sees plenty of space to set down a glass and enjoy the rooms :). It's perfectly done!

i also don't see this 'layered' house as particularly cluttered---it looks MUCH different than some of the other layered homes you've shown. i like it---looks familiar!! not the furnishings, but the amount is similar to my home, though mine is not as neat!!

Thanks for posting Jim~~i'm another lover of lots of 'stuff', and find it adds a coziness to a house or room. An 'edited' room doesn't have the same vibe. Guess I don't find it cluttered, just very well displayed 'vignettes'. ;o)
