are so old and out of date. There are some forums where no one hardly ever post on, so why keep them open. Some of the forums go back over 10 years.

I think there are just too many forums, I am sure some could be consolidated with others.

I agree and that's why when I do have a question I'll post in a specific forum, but I also post here because of the high number of posters. I get an answer here immediately, but on other forums I am still dusting off my question lol

Schultz Aquatic Soil IS Turface, but you can't use it if it's labeled aquatic soil. When I talk about pine bark, I mean any pine bark that is appropriate in size, regardless of what it's labeled. ... Speaking of labels - I hope you know I was only teasing about not being able to use the aquatic soil (and praying you had a sense of humor. At least I didn't wait until the END of the post to tell you!) ;o) You might be able to find 'Schultz Soil Conditioner', too - which is ALSO Turface that you can't use because of the label on the darned bag! (evil grin) I use horticultural charcoal in the bottom of my very shallow containers. The stuff I have is quite fine & screened to about the same size as the crushed granite or about 1/8". I feel it helps to keep the soil sweet (not pH 'sweet') in situations where a PWT is very undesirable (that would be in very shallow containers, for me), so go ahead & use it if the size is appropriate. No need to drill extra holes in the terra cotta pots. It will make no difference if there is 1 or 100, as long as water can exit the 1 - you'd just be making extra work for yourself. I use grains on my lawn for fertilizer. However, when the weather is especially humid but not too hot (over 90), dollar spot still shows up. Last year when it made an especially strong appearance, I went ahead and bought some commercial granular fertilizer and that help clear it right up. Yes, I do buy into the practice of using organic fertilizers to add beneficial fungus and bacteria, but the nitro count is still a little low if you want to get rid of a strong case of dollar spot. To back up turf toes, make sure it is dollar spot before adding nitro. In my case and in the case of my neighbors, dollar spot is not brown, but has a straw like color. The outbreak spots are also small, not much bigger than a silver dollar (the old silver dollars), the bottom of a styrofoam cup is about the right size. The spots do grow, however.

This past spring we built some planters 2 feet off of the ground, 6 inches deep. I used a mix very similar to Mel's Mix. The compost I added was 3 different brands of "box-store" humus-n-manure type products. I used a double measure of the various "composts" (calling them compost is a compliment they don't deserve) than I did of either vermiculite or peat. As our reliable friend Violet recommends, I mulched heavily. I wish I had used or purchased more high-quality compost! It seems as though my garden is suffering from a severe nutrient deficiency as a result of store-bought compost only. If there is one area I would suggest you concentrate your efforts, find some good, healthy, nutritious organic material to add to your mix. I now wish I hadn't used any peat. I mean, it's void of nutrients, it seems it's only value is moisture retention and, compost performs that task better (I believe) plus, "real" compost has nutients in it. We are experiencing record heat, here near New Orleans. My mix is not at all drying out quickly. I'd have to look at our temps the past few weeks but, I think we got into the mid-to-high 90's every day for 3 weeks. If drying-out were "MY" main concern, I'd add more vermiculite. But again, I believe a generous amount of good compost will do all you're asking.

Good luck with your Thanksgiving cactus! Love to see pics when it blooms! I too use tomato fertilizer on them for the last year, so far it's worked well, good blooms last year. Normally I get 3 blooming periods out of them no matter what fertilizer I'm using, the main difference seems to be is that the plants got much larger with the tomato fertilizer. It's low 40's here in the mountains often at night already so I have to do the inside late night out early morning thing to get good repeat blooms here for the next week or two or whenever I run out of time for it. Your a bit warmer than us so you should be able to keep them out for awhile longer with no problems, also probably no in out lol. Maybe yours will get some buds before you bring them in, mine get buds usually within two weeks or so after I bring them in. I simply can't leave them out until they do, it gets too cold. I keep all of mine in a partly shaded northeast window (lots of bright light but only a little direct sun), house is normally 50-60% humidity all year or higher, it's cooler near the window - probably 60 to 65 degrees, so yours should do well too where you keep them. I've found it can get a bit dark in some areas of the house by early January in my corner of PA so I tend to shine a cheap drop light with one of those curly 13 to 20 watt compact fluorescent bulbs (equivalent to 60 to 75 watt) on any plants that seem to need some additional light. Usually 8 to 10 hours a day has been quite helpful to them if they need it. Cheap to run too. Not enough to make anything but my african violets bloom but enough to make some of the other plants a little happier. Makes it so I can put some plants in some unexpected places when I run out of room!

WOW, ruthie, you sure got out of the wrong side of the bed. I was just making an observation and giving an opinion. To me is something isn't used why take up the space. Take a pill OK. haha

You interpret my question/comment way wrong...I didn't get up in a bad mood at all and I even clarified the question saying that I wasn't being snarky so maybe you are the one that needs to chill.

I was curious and just wanted to know. I too know that there are many out there that are not used but it's not a big deal to me so I wondered why it was to you....no snark dear lady, only curiosity..

I enjoy going to the different forums I remember many were started by disgruntled posters because too many postings on one site were of a lightly off topic than that the original fourum,. Like Paper Arts posts were on Crafts forum. etc.
Sometime a forum will pick up and then go back to sleep for a while

Some of the forums get so little activity they aren't worth checking, like health and exercise, which also get so much spam. The knitting forum has occasional posts, but if you want help or have a question there, it will take a while. Some forums could probably be eliminated. I guess it's easier just to let them be. Good question as I've wondered myself.

I think for some of the topics there are other really wonderful forums, like Ravelry for knitting/crocheting. I'm sure there are other great and more active forums about retiring, parenting, etc., and maybe people go to them rather than little-used places.

I guess if GW wanted to keep the most active forums, someone could go through and "clean house."

I agree, and have written to GW a couple of times to review and either consolidate them, or remove them. Some get quite controversial, especially when it is family, which to me is funny, because they sound made up. Several could be more active if people would at least go to them and post/answer--example Retirement which there is so much information that needs to be out there and would help some of the other forums. Crafting should be combined with others like knitting etc. Maybe if we all wrote in with positive suggestions that would help.

It's kind of like a cupboard that needs to be cleaned out and reorganized...toss the unused items/forums.

It doesn't bother me at all I just wish some of the posters would come back of course they might not be around anymore

Maybe if we were paying the $15 a year like we used to it would bother me

I'm smiling as I read this thread because I also like to visit the HGTV message boards. Over there, there are forums dedicated to shows that have been off the air for years and get only the occasional misguided poster who somehow doesn't notice that the forum gets no views. I've requested that those forums be removed, but nothing ever happens. I suppose in both cases (GW and HGTV) the administrators aren't very interested in spending their resources cleaning house. I know exactly how they feel...LOL!

I find the Menopause forum is very slow. I mean, by the time I get a reply to a question about going *into* menopause, I will be *in* menopause. ha

Fun2BHere, I smiled when I read your post. The Kitchen Table came into being when Spike saw that there was a fracas at HGTV and he set up this forum to fill the gap.

I agree with trimming down. It is fun to go on the Kitchen and home Decorating because there is always up to date activity.
It would be nice if the other forum were active, but the truth is, they are not.
I think that maybe the OP is thinking that keeping them is kind of a waste of time especially for those that go into thme and the see that thye are very outdated.

Its the same way in real life, every time I ask a woman about menopause she takes off on a rant, screaming, fussing, crying and boo hooing for hours, but never once have I got a calm sensible answer.......LOL

I justwent to some of those dormant forums to the galleries and saved over 37 photos of items I posted there . If they discontinue the forums the galleries will be gone

I think anyone who is considering remarriage where either the bride or groom or both already have children should be required to read the Stepfamilies Forum. Nothing but problems and squabbles. It sure is active, though. I suppose those folks need a place to vent.

Some forums have posts at the top that are more than ten years old.

The quilting forum is very active now. For a couple of years it was quite slow but now there are many active new members. I've been on there for almost 10 years.

Enjoyingspring, she isn't being snarky at all, just being her usual self is all.... But IMHO, I think if there are no posts in a years time, that forum is pretty much dead... but then sometimes it is nice to go back over some topics from time to time...
