Need ideas for range hood (Pics please)

Hi dear GWers!

Need your help in deciding what type of range hood to add to my kitchen. So far, these are the things that we have changed from the picture below:

GE cafe stove

Ivory Fantasy granite

Next will be:

-backsplash (take out existing tile in the picture. I will start a new thread on backsplash tile suggestion once I get some samples to show. So far my inclination is towards marble subway tile like the lansdale from the tile shop and decorative accent diamond shape combination of glass, stone and metal tiles above the stove from sonoma tilemakers).

-Undercabinets lights (will go with Xenon from what I learned here are the preferable ones)

-taller crown moldings for the upper cabinets and molding to cover the undercabinets lights)

-Paint the walls a grayish-green like BM Sag Harbor grey to pick up the greyish green veins from the granite.

So, in order to move ahead, I need to decide on the range hood. Two options we are exploring:

1)A raised wood Hood + blower 2)a SS undercabinet range hood. My friend who is a cabinet installer suggested raising the existing cabinet above my stove to add some height from the other upper cabinets and then finishing the upper cabinets with taller crown moldings.

What would you do if this was your kitchen? We would like to add some "interest", "statement" or WOW factor to the stove area. I love those kitchens with "a hearth and a mantle" but I only have 30" to work with.

Raising the cabinet might give you unfinished spots on the side, but you'll be doing new moulding so fixing that might not be a big deal.

Another option to turn that area into a focal point is to go all out on the 'splash behind the range and a barely-there hood like glass or a slideout.

Can you knock a hole in the wall for a niche behind the range?

Fori, about knocking a whole in the wall for a niche, I'll ask my DH if this is possible. I was thinking on doing some kind of decorative tile design with frame moulding behind the range. The range has been replaced with a GE cafe. So, there is more room behind the range. Don't get the "splash behind the range idea with a barely there hood. Do you have pictures to show me. Really appreciate your willingness to help me...

Mine has dowels at the back poking into the wall -- it's sturdy enough for a small teapot and a few bottles, but I definitely wouldn't let monkeys practice their gymnastics on it :) The row of tiles doesn't protrude. I had a plain subway tile wall above the range but it looked a little too plain, so I had the shelf added as an afterthought. HTH. Blue

Happy July 4th!! Thanks to all of you for your suggestions. Okay, here is what I am up against. My husband really wants the back splash to extend up to the ceiling. I showed him pictures of beekeeperswife's kitchen where the backsplash stopped just a few inches short of the base of the hood and the wall was painted just above the backsplash and under the hood. This is a great trick that ties in the painted area to the area under the hood as well. Another option that we both like is adding an arched panel with crown at the top leaving the bottom open rather than an soffit type box. Instead of stopping at the top of the cabinets, extend a few inches down between the cabinets to allow the tile to disappear and go up the wall to meet the ceiling behind it. I am thinking a panel like the arched panels in these pics without the cabinets above it, mounting flush against the ceiling with crown on the top. It could also be an after thought design element tying in the archs from our windows and doorway into the cabinet area. Neverdifficult - We are really second guessing ourselves for not adding that little extra to extend the cabinet heights. It's not like we can't add it now but we like the continious crown molding around the room and adding something like this arched panel might dress up that stainless hood which was my husband's "absolutely gotta have" piece.

oh! but it would if i got a narrowish longish one, cut it in half and had someone who knew what they were talking about (which is not me!) weld it together! that is exactly the type of idea i'm looking for. as my hubby and i were watching burn notice tonight, i couldn't help but look at my space. we are going to panel the ceiling and i thought it would look cool if i had an industrial duct coming off of whatever contraption we decide on. i too am really excited to see some suggestions. some things i've been thinking of: an old galvanized trough. a big rusty wheelbarrel. a vintage john boat. (we live in florida so it wouldn't bee TOO out of place!;)) i know that there are thousands of random items out there that i don't even know about. hopefully something will stick. and my husband will be able to get past the fact that we are hanging something that someone else is throwing away over our new range. :)

Your overall look seems classic and traditional. I could see something like either of the 2 wood hoods or the copper hood I've pasted in below working. I think the copper would be spectacular, and then maybe you could use small copper tile accents in your backsplash.

I think the hoods annes posted are beautiful and truly make a design statement. I just wonder if your space is vast enough to handle it. I think fori may be referring to a glass canopy hood or one that slides out from the cab. The only problem with a wall mounted hood whether glass or more traditional like fori posted is it SHOULD be 3" wider then your stove in both sides. You would lose your upper cab and have issues with both your side cabs. You might be best off with some kind of insert that can fit into the exisiting cab.

Check out Nalcar's hood in the thread linked below (as well as the niches). It's a nothing hood. Barely there. Yours would have cabinets framing it a bit on the sides of course as Nalcar has all short cabs. Modern in that kitchen, but invisible in a traditional one, leaving room to do a fab backsplash. Now, you would need a really fabulous behind-the-range treatment if you decided to take the hood out of the decorating equation.

Not sure I'd DO it, but it's something to consider along with all the other considerations.
