My BP is high

And stressing out about it isn't helping to lower it, so I'm trying to stay calm. Last night we landed in the birthing center at midnight because my home cuff gave me a reading of 155/93. I called and was told to go in (35 minute drive). I have high BP, even before the pregnancy, but my readings have been perfect until now (I've been on meds for 2 years).

I'm so scared--I don't feel ready for this baby yet! They increased my meds and I hope that helps. Doc mentioned bedrest, but we can't afford the leave if I have to do that, but we'll do what we have to do. I'm 35 weeks today. I hope baby can hang in there another 2 weeks.

Did any of you go through this? They have tested my urine for protein--it's been negative so far. I'm scheduled for weekly bloodwork now, and weekly ultrasounds.

two weeks isn't a long time...Just stay calm and focused. You do what you have to do and it's going to be soon.

Linked below is an interview with Dr. Tom Brewer, who pioneered treatment of pre-eclampsia (a symptom of which is high blood pressure) with diet. The official website of the Brewer Diet (which emphasizes protein) is BlueRibbonBaby.org, but I can't access it for some reason.

I followed his diet when I was pregnant with my third child, although I didn't have BP problems. It was just a great diet for pregnancy. I gained somewhat less weight, lost somewhat more after the birth, and delivered a large, healthy baby.

I don't know if this is related, but I can also tell you that when I gave up sugar and simple carbs and increased my protein intake (I was not pregnant at the time), my BP went down. I continue to eat that way, and my PB has stayed down.

Hi, On some web sites backpack blowers had the nickname "Bad Boy" due to their noise. I actually have a Redmax 8001. I am not a pro gardener but have alot of trees and leaves to shift come autumn, actualy right about now. Yes it does make alot of noise, but it is OK if you wear some ear protection. I use those small yellow disposable sponge things AND a set of STHIL ear muffs. I also use the same ear protection when I am running my Honda HRC216 mower too. I find it alot less tiring when all the noise is cut out. As for power, I think you can never have enough. I think the Redmax 8001 is about the most powerful there is. If you have any more power the weight will sort of get to you. The only down side I see on the Redmax is the weight. It sort of gets to me after about 45 mins of use. Then again I am a wimp.... The Redmax has so far been very reliable and I am on my third season with it. All the best, Mike.

I am 73 years old. Some 30 years ago, my BP started going up, and I was advised to reduce salt. I did it and monitored my BP every day, and watched it go down gradually but steadily. and it stayed down for a few years. Then it started climbing again, and I started taking anti-hypertensive medications. I now take two different such medications to keep my BP within normal range, and I watch my diet. Eliminating salt from your diet is very difficult because so many things contain salt. It's not just avoiding the salt shaker and avoiding salt in the food you cook. Most people do not know it, but milk, bread and most cold cuts and cheeses contain salt. Meats and fishes also contain some salt. The only things that contain no salt are potatoes, fruit and veggies, rice, grains, beans and unsalted nuts. You can accustom your taste buds to "like" unsalted food and, after a few weeks, you will find even lightly salted things too salty and wonder how you ever ate them. Depending on your personal situation, you might make life very complicated for the people you live with. If you decide to embark on this low sodium effort, make sure your BP elevation is not so high as to pose a serious risk, because you could do yourself harm if you do not get your BP under control promptly. Another thing to consider is that some people with high BP have a form of the disease that is particularly salt-sensitive. They respond especially well to reduced sodium intake. If your illness is not of that type, then you will probably eventually find that sodium restriction does not afford you the degree of BP control that you need, and you will have to start taking medication. Of you can try calcium supplements, but they can be constipating. The cheapest and for most people safest starting antihypertensive medication is hydochlorthiazide (HCZT), which is available as a generic and costs less than $20 per month. It's a very safe drug, and you will probably not experience any unpleasant side effects. Blood pressure control is one of the few areas where the drug industry has succeeded very well. The available treatments are highly effective and extremely safe. You will hardly know you are taking any medication, and the "silent killer" can be kept safely at bay.

None. None at all. One day, about 6 years ago, I was waiting in the supermarket pharmacy for someone to get a prescription filled. they had one of those free BP machines. I sat down and tried it. The number was waaaay too high for normal...so I assumed the machine wasn't working properly. Because,I felt fine. A couple of months later, one morning, I had horrible dizziness, nausea, and very short of breath. I thought I was having a heart attack, was afraid to drive, and called 911. I walked into the ambulance,sat on the cot, and as a formality...the EMT took my BP. He yelled to the driver to turn the siren on, pushed me down on my back, dialed the hospital...and then started giving me these horrible little pills (nitroglycerin). My BP was 250 something over 180 something ! Turns out I didn't have a heart attack, but whle I was in the hospital the next few days...I lost count of how many people came in to see the woman who was walking and talking with the highest BP they had ever seen, and without having an MI.

Well I did the ultra sound on my uterus and it checked out, since I have been having the anxiety issues, my doctor did prescribe hormones and even wanted me to go on the pill, I refused both, he also gave me a prescription for the anxiety, which I also refused, as soon as I get moved I will start visiting my Chiropractor again, I have also began eating yogurt with different fruits mixed in with it and sprinkling flax seed on it as well, I eat a yam about once or twice a week, I am drinking green tea and ramped up my exercise and I can tell a big difference. My mother was 42-43 when she went thru menopause and my sister was around 48-49, so after they did my blood test they confirmed I was definitely in menopause, I too have been lucky with the hot flashes and no night sweats, don't want to be on the bp medicine for ever either. I am from north Texas and lived 17 years in SE Texas, but have been in Ohio the last year helping my fiance rehab his house, we are on our way back to North Texas in about three weeks. In Houston there is the Doctor Dr. William Hotze, he specializes in holistic medicines geared towards hormones, thyroid and such, I used to listen to his radio show and always said when I go thru menopause I will make a point to see this doctor, he has worked wonders for women all over when they were going thru peri and menopause, the weight gain, being tired, not being able to sleep, allergies and men with conditions they experience with thyroid and hormones. His web site is Hotzehealthandwellness. The only draw back is because of the medicine he practices, he doesn't take insurance, but now they will actually let you set up a payment plan. He is an amazing doctor, I have actually heard callers on his radio show that have come to see him from other states as well. Hope this helps anyone else who is going thru this time in their lives...

Bearcat, my daughter delivered her first baby on December 18th last year. She was due January 1st. He was 2 weeks early and everything was absolutly fine. The doctors usually say the due date is a plus/minus 2 week guess anyway. You're going to be fine. But your blood pressure is important to lower. You really have to try to do your best to not stress out right now. Try and get lots of rest (that's important for an easy delivery) and if you have a few odds and ends to do ask for help from family etc. Good luck and keep us informed.

By the way my little grandson Andre' is a little over 3 months and he's a living doll!! And the doctor says that he's ahead of himself on his development! You are in for a treat.

My bp is always really good, but I think it was high at one point with my first baby. It was fine the next time I went in.

I had trouble with high BP with my second and third pregnancy. I was put on bed rest for 6 weeks with the second baby and had to just take it easy for the third. The most important things is to relax as much as you can. The more upset and worried you get the worse your blood pressure can get. I feel for you,it is always so scary when you are pregnant and things happen that make you worry about the baby. They were worried about toxemia with my last pregnancy but everything went well anyways. I wasn't supposed to have any more babies because my body is pretty much wore out after having 3 babies in 5 years, so had my tubes tied after Hayden was born. But guess what, I am 7 weeks pregnant. They did all the surgery right but they have told me it is just about a miracle that I became pregnant. So we are excited about the baby even though Hayden is only 8 months right now. It is weird to hold a baby in my lap and know that another tiny baby is growing in my belly:)
