Were you going to put any furniture under the sconces like a sideboard? If so, forget about the sconces and just put 2 lamps on the sideboard. If not, the sconces wouldn't look so good anyhow just floating in air. You could always use a pretty floor lamp in one of the corners for additional lighting.

I have a sideboard under a third sconce that is exactly where I wanted it to be (except that they put an outlet on the same wall and it's not centered under the sconce!).

The idea was to put a picture between the pair of sconces at the head of the table. I thought that the table would "anchor" them since it's only a few feet away (and person sitting in chair would be closer, would have a light over each shoulder).

I wanted to put the chandy on a dimmer - I hate glaring light right over the table. Don't want to take up any floor space with floor lamps.

What do you have to do in terms of re-wiring and patching to make everything symmetric? Also, if you just use your dining room for special occasions, I wouldn't worry about having task lighting.

I think you're going to have to center the chandy. If you really want the sconces, I wouldn't worry about the chair being too close to the cabinet- it looks like enough room and people could walk around the table the other way if they had to, and probably no one would need access to the cabinet during meals.

But, I do think the sconces might seem odd not serving the purpose of illuminating a buffet. I would try to turn the whole shebang around, with the cabinet against the sconce wall to hide the holes, and the table then turned to run parallel with the cabinet. Maybe some cabinet lights would look nice in the mirrored cabinet- there was a thread on those a few weeks ago.

What you should do at this point depends on how stressed you are. Building is not an easy project so if you can't face more, just hang some pics for now. If you are still up for more then make sure you measure three times and get the sconces where you want them.

When we built I had to correct several electrical placements that were off-center and I still ended up with a doorbell fixture that is not centered. Don't know why this is not fully covered in Electrical 101.

I am totally stressed and have been for 2 years! I was going to hang pics, but nobody liked the ones that I have (another thread).

DH says just put the sconces back up and no one will notice, but *I* notice every time I walk in the room now that the table is in there! Didn't notice a thing when the sconces were up and we had a plywood floor with sawhorses (I was using it as a workshop for finishing woodwork).

Don't even get me started on all the misplaced electrical (and I had specified where I wanted certain things, said "just do to code" on others and they got about half of it right - when I specify a phone jack next to an outlet, I don't want them 12" apart! And the light switch that was shown on the plans as being 4ft from door is right next to the door - on the hinge side so you have to close the door to turn on the LR light!). The problem is this is an exterior wall (insulation, sheathing, firecode wall to garage). Good thing is, I'd be working within the same bay - posted on Electrical forum asking how hard it would be to move box w/o totally ripping out 16" of sheetrock.

I do have that one sconce over the buffet. Guess I could move the china cabinet (which does have lights) but right now the table is oriented on the longest axis of the room, this is the way I had planned on arranging the furniture when I designed the room around this furniture, and designed the lighting so we didn't just have one central light. I like having the chandy on a dimmer, but wanted some lighting around the perimeter of the room too (probably on a dimmer). I don't know what I'd do on that blank wall where the kitchen door is (and where I'd put the small buffet) if I moved the china cabinet to the garage wall.

My own stupid mistake forgetting that the chandy wasn't centered and letting floor be installed in a pattern. Then this would be an easy decision and I'd just move the sconce. I should have caught it on the plans too, though there were things that weren't built according to plan (some I made them change, others I let slide figuring I'd take care of them later).

I also have problem moving the chandy - at least right now, since last year they retaped my cracking ceilings but I had to pay to repaint them - and the paint the 2nd painter used doesn't touch up without flashing! I can still see the cut-in line he tried to touch up a month later above the china cabinet where he didn't roll close enough to brush strokes. I'd have to wait til we needed to repaint the ceilings (in 10 years or so?) b4 DH would let me spend more money on paint. We've already spent about $6000 in the past 2 years b/t original interior paint and then repainting the repairs - and we still have some exterior painting to do (thank goodness we have vinyl siding!), plus some touchups to foyer, MBR ceiling, and we also have an unfinished bath that will have to be painted at some point.

Bellacor has the same collection as this chandy and my foyer lights. I have flushmount in the foyer, thinking of semi-flush to dress it up (and move the 2 flush to upstairs hall). I am also thinking of replacing the track lighting in my FR with a semi-flush (if it won't interfere with the Xmas tree) to match the nickel pendant over the breakfast table (Canterbury collection) and the ceiling fan.

Before I order all the semiflush fixtures, should I also order the single sconces for the DR (in polished brass), or the 2-light "bath bars" - I am hoping to cover the hole/patch where I have to move that one sconce, but don't want the back wall of my DR to look like I should have a 2-sink vanity there LOL! I don't have a 5-6ft long console table to put there, nor do I have room with the table centered under the chandy to put anything on that wall.

I did find a bronze-framed (traditional style) mirror at TJ Maxx last night for $70, but was afraid that I would need something under it. For some reason (sconces in hallways in hotels?) I think I can put lighting on the wall, or even hang pictures, without having furniture underneath, but mirrors make me want to have something under. Maybe b/c I'm just used to seeing mirrors in baths and foyers (with a small table under).

Or should I look for something different for the DR, change out the chandy too? Maybe in antique brass? I will keep the polished brass in the foyer since I have 3 lights there and want them to coordinate, don't want to change flushmount at bottom of stairs. Plus all my door HW is polished brass.
