Show me pics of your Island Legs

I didnt really like anything that our cabinet company offered, so we are having our two island legs made.

I like straight lines, nothing ornate or fancy. The cabinets are a shaker style. Show me what you got! I need suggestions/ideas :)

So I see that you have decided on the white cabinets....that was the one that I was voting for. I also am having legs made for my island so I am excited to see different options. BTW I asked my husband how much our stain shop charged per door to see if it was more or less than you were quoted but he didn't remember. I can give you the number to the shop if you want it...also DH said that Keim takes a truck to the shop and makes deliveries so you wouldn't have to worry about transport. Here are my island legs, but I'm afraid they might be similar to what you already have in your drawing, lol. Excuse the light "grungy" area around the base of the legs. That's where there was a very big disconnect between me, my builder, and the flooring guys. They put oak quarter-round on all my toekicks and table legs!!! Since the granite was installed already, we couldn't replace the legs easily. Luckily, there wasn't damage that couldn't be touched up once all the quarter-round was removed. Since these pics were taken, the floor has been re-sanded and poly'd so it doesn't look grungy anymore :)

I think the island effect is much more attractive in settings where lawn is not the surrounding material. Arizona gardens which use desert plants and trees set in a sea of gravel could also be considered islands of plantings, but look more natural. Here in coastal California, islands are often created using groundcovers of various heights as the medium that knits the islands together, often incorporating stone or gravel paths for access. Something about a soft flowing mass of Blue Chalk Sticks/Senecio mandraliscae, or Mexican Evening Primrose/Oenothera berlandieri, or Snow in Summer/Cerastium tomentosum in lieu of lawn makes all the difference in my mind, and saves water to boot in our mediterannean climate with 7 months of dry season. Or, if turf is to be the linking material, then why not a more natural meadow using a low growing grass that can be left natural or only cropped at intervals during the season? Some of the dwarf Carex species are superb for this effect here along the west coast, such as Carex pansa or Carex tumicola/Berkeley Sedge, (which has lately been found out as a non-California native imposter from the east coast/England, but still does incredibly well here with minimal to no summer irrigation. My favorite "island" planting schemes are the natural vistas I see here along the coast where our soft chaparral natives combine soft grays and greens along with succulents and bush lupines to make undulating mounds interspersed amongst lower growing bunch grasses, or the very similar appearing fynbos vegetation of the Western Cape of South Africa with the proteas, succulents, restios and heathers giving a similar effect. Mown grass as the linking planting would just look out of place in such a panorama...

Suggest you go to a lighting store. Two national chains are Lamps Plus, and Lights Fantastic. You may have local lighting companies. On an 8' island, I would suggest three pendants. In decorating circles, odd numbers are preferable.

Wow that first picture was GIGANTIC. Sorry about that, folks. Posting from the iPad made it hard to resize. Here are a couple of pictures of the island supports for aliris19 and dmwbcc. Please excuse the yet-to-be-installed refrigerator handles and paper towels on the island! Our overhang is about 52" give or take. It's supported with three legs and a giant multi-layered piece of plywood. I've attached a dimensioned plan for reference (the drawing only shows two legs, but that didn't work out).

Hi - my island is about as small as a rectangular island comes, and is in a small kitchen (12.5 x 14' I think). There are only 3 practical places to put it but they're pretty limiting as you can imagine. One is to turn it parallel with the long counter (that has the sink in it and two windows above); the other way is to make it appear to be coming out of the old furnace chimney (has the mushroom painting hanging on it) - almost like a built-in counter; and the final way is to do the latter only pull it out from the chimney a little to make its edges line up with other edges in the room (e.g. edge of stove or doorway to mudroom) to give it a feeling of more symmetry and make it more centered. Here are the pics - apologies for the dirty kitchen! The first one is of the island parallel to the long counter: (I'll be replacing the stainless top of the island w/ butcher block since our new counter will be stainless and I don't want to go overboard...that counter will have a white farm sink and gooseneck faucet BTW - I'm always defending it and trying to explain how it won't look too modern in its surroundings! ;) Here is a link that might be useful: Kitchen island parallel w/ long countertop

Yep, we're going with painted. This photo shows cream instead of white. I have a choice of eggshell or white and that I havent decided on yet. Im going to get samples of each color, take them to the house and see how they look. And yes, Keim has FREE delivery - thank goodness!

Hi, just wanted to let you know that when I was looking for island legs, I was quoted some ridiculous prices for legs. I finally found some I loved and they were a fraction of the cost others had quoted.

I don't work for the company, just had a good experience with them and wanted to share.

So far I like the Morris and I also like the Crafstman Era legs from budge's link. From optionalnecessity's link I like the square mission post, but it isnt available in cherry.
