small patio design ideas,

We have a very small backyard next to a busy street. Our cement patio is 10x10 and 5 ft behind it we have 10 blue spruces. I don't know what to do to make our patio area look more appealing. We do some entertaining, but not alot. We have a 6 yr old boy who loves to be outside, but our patio is so plain and boring we hardly spend time back there. Pergola or a 10x20 floating wooden deck w/ benches? Our budget is $1,500.

A picture would be helpful. Do you have anything there now?

A pergola would be nice if shade is needed. But one would cover the entire patio. DIY you could construct one within your budget. Adjacent planting beds could provide privacy and color.

I am currently planning on fixing up our 12'x14' concrete patio slab with a much smaller budget. I have decided to use quikrete concrete stains to make the concrete look like marble. A medium gray and deep blue are the colors I'll be using, the semi transparent is $25 a gallon at my lowes, and they're supposed to cover somewhere around 300sq feet. I will have to clean the concrete really well before, but it will save me a lot doing it all myself!

I also have a container garden on the patio, which dresses it up nicely, I have roses and annuals, but with a little boy, you may want to go with something thornless. You could even do something more tropical and overwinter it in your garage. I have clematis vines that crawl up the side of the house on trellises, which could be used to climb up a pergola if you go in that direction. A climbing rose would be gorgeous on a pergola, just don't go to a hardware store and buy a bagged rose, they are notorious for being disease prone and never as nice as the picture! Depending on your zone, New Dawn, Climbing Pinkie (thornless rose), Madame Alfred Carriere, and Climbing Eden are all rose climbers that I have and love. I buy from Roses Unlimited, Pickering Nurseries, Rogue Valley Roses, & Countryside Roses which always send me fantastic plants. There is also a website for roses, peonies, and clematis called Help Me Find, it is IMHO the best resource out there for roses.

You did not give us any information on your location and what kind of weather you get, but if you get hot summers, and need shade, I have a few neighbors who have the shade sails, and they look great. In the winter I think most people take them down, so if you have heavy snow that wouldn't be a problem. A pergola is a great way to spruce up your patio, but as fnmroberts pointed out, one would cover your entire patio. That may be what you're looking for though.

I also came across these decking tiles, I really liked the way they look and that they are easy install that you can put them right over a concrete slab. And, when you move, you can just unsnap them and take them with you! The brand I saw most was Vifah, they have some styles for discount at Overstock.com and you can buy them in bulk on Amazon & www.aquasuperstore.com. I put a direct link below for you. Each tile covers 1sqft so you would need 100 for your 10x10 deck. Well, good luck and keep us updated!

I like our 2" thick 12x12 pavers edged in orange brick laid on a sand base. It was a lot more work than we 1st thought because our ground wasn't level. I wish we would have checked that before we started excavating the soil. If you're going to DIY instructions are available online for building a base. I highly recommend you follow the advice so that your patio has the correct slope for drainage & stays in place. It's hard work digging, leveling, tamping, carrying & spreading sand, moving pavers, etc. & you don't want to have to do it over. An evergreen climber on a trellis would screen views. If you want partial shade you might consider a pergola and grow grapes or other edibles on it. You mentioned a child & I've found that our younger visitors enjoy playing on the lawn, wood chip area under the cedar tree, or the wooden deck rather than the paver patio. You might consider a more forgiving surface while your child is young. I'm also more relaxed when our nephew is on the lawn or deck with resin furniture than on the patio near the iron furniture. When our kids were young we had a covered sand box that was enjoyed nearly year round then when they were done with it the sand went into the garden & we gave away the sand box. We kept the sand toys & trucks right in the sand box underneath the lid, so it was easy to remove the lid & play. In my area the cedar play chips are readily available & make a nice covering that stays dry during wet winters. Unplanted areas where our lawn wouldn't grow because of shade or where we walk a lot to the hose and to the chicken coops have been covered with the play chips and cedar arborist chips. I like the weathered look that is easy to maintain because it never need mowing, watering, or weeding! On occasion rake a bit & renew to keep the depth. If you think you might want to grow plants at some point in your backyard you may want to use chips now & let them decompose then when your child is older you could rake them aside & layer compost materials for growing vegetables & fruits. on_greenthumb, your firepit area is lovely. I really like that. I love the idea of a rubble patio, and perhaps can use that as the center of ours (which we hope to put in late summer or early fall). However it has to be flat (unlike my walkway of broken concrete: each source comes with a different thickness) for my Mom and my pal (who is blind) to navigate more easily than the front walk (which I will need to get laid flatter, eventually). I think if you plan on using really heavily weighted items like a stone fireplace, grill island, sink etc. you need at least some of the area poured. We plan on having a "primitive" kitchen (mostly cement items) around the edges, so we need stability: we also need a footer for a knee wall around the edge to keep any flooding waters off the patio and kitchen area. That said, I really want to keep things as do-it-yourself as possible. I have fun doing projects like hosenemesis patio area - and enjoy the feeling of a job well accomplished! on_greenthumb's area would be a nice "landing" for a hammock. Someone gave me a hammock last fall, and once we get some backyard happening, I'd like to find a place for DH to snuggle down into the garden and relax...

Yes, the patio should be the length of the house, whatever the shape. If you want a covered area or pergola, I would only put it over the side of the house to the right of the back door, where you have the horizontal window. That leaves one part of the patio with sunshine, and you won't be blocking the light into your home at the larger window. You can put slats on the end of a pergola to block the neighbor's view of your patio. Or leave the patio near the house open for a dining table and bbq space and plan a lounge area and pergola further out into your yard.

I agree, you have terrific potential. That is actually a generous patio space. IF the wall is a comfortable height, with some cushions it can make additional seating. As @latifolia suggests, have a landscsping plan developed to provide privacy and shade. One will site plantings correct for your climate and soil and to provide seasonal color. Think about how you wish to utilize the outside space(s). Will shade be necessary while landscaping matures? Insect protection? Size of group(s) for dining or socializing? Grilling, firepit, socializing, hot tub, etc.? Take your time. Meanwhile obtain a few inexpensive patio chairs from which to imagine.

Hi there,

I would recommend to get a small round wooden table & 2 benches side by side. I'd my patio garden designed that way. And it's best use of space when you have a small & cozy patio.

You just need to be creative : )
