How to discourage a duck?

We frequently have a vistor to our pool. A mallard duck. I chase him off as soon as I see him, but he keeps coming back.

We are one of 4 pools in the general vicinity. I guess from up above it must look like lake heaven to ducks.

Short of getting a dog, or using a BB gun, is there any way to change the ducks behavior to never come back?

I use Milorganite on my lawn and even spread it throughout my beds, and I have chipmunks galore. They have a big den under my deck, but I see them disappearing into other areas, too. I don't know if the tunnels all lead to the deck or not. So if Milorganite repels chippies in theory, where would they go? Would they actually leave their home? Or do you just mean they will leave the plants alone? I rarely see plant damage, but they've done a number on my front cement stoop. It's sinking and I see the little devils going in and out of the hole that's formed. So I've been using rat traps, but not having much luck this year with them. They must be getting smarter. I tried the bucket of death method last year...messy and it works...but I stopped when one poster witnessed it taking almost two hours of torture before it finally drowned. I can't stomach that, so scratch that idea. My next try is going to be the Rat Zapper. I think that's the name of it, it's the battery operated one that is reusable. So with the trap method, no butterflies are harmed.

I was out at 3:30 this morning turning on the sprinklers in anticipation of a windy day. Turned out even windier that I'd expected with speeds of 30+ mph and gusts above 40!! While I was setting up the sprinklers, an owl was watching and screeching at me from the neighbor's garage roof. Still, when I arrived at the garden late in the afternoon - a small bunny raced out of the area where I've seen him twice before. Given enuf time, the owl will have him. I haven't seen another rabbit in the garden in weeks. If you aren't blessed with owls, I'm not sure what to do with the rabbits short of shooting them or running them off with a dog. Ground squirrels are different. Usually, their burrows are easily found and the squirrels don't venture far from home. Several times, I have dissuaded them by showing up at their burrows with a sledge hammer and a short piece of wood. Rocks are always at hand in my area. I select about 3 "burrow-sized" boulders and drive them down the holes with the sledge hammer and chunk of wood. That has proven to be a solution. digitS'

I think this was discussed a long time ago - people recommended something floating (moving) about in the pool. Like a blow-up alligator! I seem to remember that it worked...

Pretty much any floating pool to should do it. A weight tied to it will keep it in the pool on windy days. I have used a tiger and an alligator at some f my customer's homes. I have dogs so I don't have the issue.

I'll give the pool alligator a try. However, the pool sweep is going when he's there and it doesn't seem to faze him at all. He swam with it moving around him.

Unless, of course, you want more ducks. Which I assume you don't.

Not really, he knows he's found a safe water zone and will continue to come back until he feels its unsafe

I'd try the owl statue, the alligator float, or IMO get you a super soaker water pistol and blast him with a bead of water every time you see him in the pool. A few days of being doused will be enough to get him to land in neighbors pools instead of yours.

The Scarecrow sprinkler is a tried and true solution. I use them to keep Blue Heron's out of my pond. It's a motion activated sprinker.
