Paint help: white cabs, wood countertops, copper pots...

I need some suggestions for paint color for our kitchen walls, of which there will only really be hints here and there, and for our ceiling (if something other than white). The house is a 1930 colonial. The kitchen will have traditional 1 1/2 inch red oak floors, white cabinets (SW Dover White), Ikea beech countertops which will be waterloxed, and a pot rack with patinaed copper pots. May use marble subway tile by range and may have a soapstone topped center island but not totally sure on either of those yet.

I should mention that unfortunately there is no direct natural light. :(

Any thoughts or pictures you can share? Will be much appreciated!

Restoration Hardware's silver sage is really nice w this combo - i have this in my mudroom.. will post pics at some point :o)

I think it will look terrible and you must sell me those sinks immediately! Seriously, I have a craftsman-style bungalow and am about to put in copper kitchen counters; already have copper cupboard knobs and the look really works well, especially with deep yellows and Morris greens. I have the original fir trim, so the orange tones are perfect -- this might work a bit differently for you with painted/white trim. Yes, I'd sink the bowls in a bit, more so they don't scream "2007 Vessel" than "I'm Copper", but sitting on top really wouldn't be offensive - that's more an issue of usability and how you think they'd work functionally. Fixtures: my kitchen faucets will most likely be copper, but I'd suggest polished nickel over the satin you're considering. In my experience modern brushed/satin fixtures bring out the gray in nickel but polished finish leaves the warm golden undertone, which would work better with copper. (Plus the polished nickel is vastly more historical, if authenticity is a plus.) Sounds gorgeous! Have you consulted Jane Powell's books?

Natural wood doors, white interiors (cabs) -- silly looking?

We did white interiors with natural wood doors with the Ikea cabinets we used in the laundry room. The person I ordered from looked at me like, "are you sure" when I said I wanted the white instead of the fake wood. I preferred the crispness of the white. I really like it, but maybe it's because it's in the laundry room and there is a lot of other white in the room with the w&d and big shelving/hanging unit. I believe you can get some sort of wood edging tape to put on the ends of the interior shelves and frame so that any frame showing in gaps around the doors and drawers blend in with the exterior. We had a cabinet maker friend make our bathroom cabinetry 20 years ago. They are beautiful cherry. At the time, he used white cabinet interiors and drawer boxes. He does it differently now.

Thank you all so much! It's so nice to get feedback from the experts here. EAM, I love the color boards you do for people. Really helps me visualize the final look. Funny you should suggest glass tile for the bs--that was my initial idea, but I haven't found one that doesn't pull green in my kitchen. Even the Yorkshire tan wall paint looks greener than it does here. I like your idea of incorporating the burgundy, SparklingWater. I was thinking of putting a burgundy pendant or two above the peninsula. Hadn't even thought of using it on the cabs! Hmmmm, more to think about. Looking forward to seeing your cabs when you are finished pinkpaula. I am DIY'ing too! Thanks again for taking the time to hold my hand through this:) I'll be sure to post progress (and hopefully soon, finished) pics.

White glazed cabs with stained wood window trim

pudgybaby- great question and one I've been mulling over myself. There was a kitchen recently where the poster did just that. She had while trim above her sink but the window next to the refrigerator and in her adjoining family room were stained. Look through all of her photos- the ones I'm talking about are at the end. I think what makes her kitchen so successful is the originality of it, the wood countertops that coordinate with her stained window trim, the stained wood island, painted beadboard trim and the warm feeling it gives off. We're thinking maybe yellow - like SW Hinoki. Any thoughts on this? The lack of natural light makes me shy away from sagey green. With compact fluorescent bulbs it might be hard to get right.

Yellow can be so pretty and it can be ugly. Its really hard to get the right shade. My previous kitchen had yellow that I loved loved loved WHERE THE SUN WOULD SHINE. In the part of the kitchen with no direct light - it looked GOLD :( I don't know the color you're considering, but I would just make sure its just a hint of yellow, not too much. Yellow and pink are 2 colors that (to me anyway) seem like the walls are reflecting or bouncing off each other. A little goes a long way. Especially with artificial lighting.

No light changes things.

Go yellow. I agree that yellow bounces off itself, but I disagree about a hint of yellow--that just looks off white or too pastel. But yellow does depend 100% on its environment. I have BM Lighthouse (NOT Lighthouse Landing) in my LR, and it looks soft, neutral and classically colonial. On a chip, it looks like the children's ward of a mental institution. It also looked awful when we tried it in the kitchen. Perfect in the LR, though.

Yellow can be very tricky, especially with not quite white...have you thought about a soft leaf green? The yellow side of green is spring like and cheerful...and will bounce what light you do have, around the room.

The difference between sage green and leaf green is like slate blue and soft turquoise...the yellow tones will really warm it up. It should be beautiful with your copper pots and butcher block countertops! Hope this gives you some good ideas :)

If the wall areas are just scraps of undesigned shapes in undesigned places, I'd paint them the same color, or very similar, as the cabinets, then bring in color just where I wanted it.

I think we want pics. We always want pics.

And I think lavender's leaf green suggestion is a very good one. Brings in the yellow light without giving you the sudden urge to do basketweaving projects and play checkers.

I'd get a sample of the soapstone and try paint samples and swatches next to it. You want your greens to complement each other. I think a light minty green might work.

Thanks for all the help - especially the inspirational photos, boxer. We painted the walls a soft buttery yellow this weekend. We have a lot of french provincial style furniture and a blue dining room so i think the yellow will work. We are in the middle of our remodel so no photos yet! The floors are being installed this week followed by the cabinets at the end of the week. I hope to have photos to share very soon!
