Question about water features

Reading this forum, it seems like a vast majority of pools run their water features off a dedicated pump. What about running the water features off the main pool pump? This will reveal my ignorance, but why cant you just return the water from the pool through the water feature?

Chil,
Depends on what you are doing with it.
If you have just a pool, then you can certainly divert that water to a water feature.
If you have a pool/spa, then if you want to use the spa, and use the water feature you have a problem.
If it is a large water feature, and you just want one pump, then you are running too much HP and wasting money to filter your pool.

In comes Pentair's new VS (variable speed) pump. TahDah
Yes it runs slow to save you money while you filter, and it runs fast to make that wow water feature.
I should get paid for this.

Others will have their reasons just wait.

We are experimenting with the Variable speed pumps as well. Usually we run separate pumps for our water features because of the size we build. We also add a booster pump to the spa. I get a kick out of the low ball builders who say "we will save you money and use everything off one pump". You end up with a nice pile of rocks and a trickle of water. And then when you are in spa mode and you want to enjoy the features you can't because they need the pump for the spa.

I have three rocks running off one pump. I measured the rocks and then asked the pump seller to recommend the size of pump. The first one wasn't strong enough so I returned it for a stronger one. DH made a three prong T with PVC pipe to split water to all three rock columns.

There are two factors to consider: 1) Where you live Some area have their tap water with very low ppm, even low enough for you to use on yours CP. The only way to know this is to get a TDS meter because it can fluctuate greatly just within a city. My tap water ppm is around 170 and my friend, that live 6 miles away, is 230. 2) What type of CP that you have Some CP are more acceptance of hart water than other. Like the Nepenthes, they will be okay with water at ppm around 160-170 as long as they are outside and in a open pot

Assuming you have a 9x48 resin tank which should have 1 cu ft of resin and you use a medium salt dose of 9 lbs you get 26,000 grains of hardness removal. Using the formula at the above link that results in a setting of 660 gallons because I find 60 gpd per person more realistic than 75 gpd. That includes a reserve calculated in. Ideally you want a softener to regenerate every 6 to 7 days unless there is iron and then more frequently. I think your small 1 cu ft softener will regen every 4 to 5 days. You could increase the hardness removal capacity of your 1 cu ft of resin by increasing the salt dose at the expense of salt efficiency. At a high salt dose of 12 lbs you'd set the gallons at 750 using 60gpd per person.

Our water features do attract wildlife. We are close to a large lake, but far enough away that the neighborhood raccoons, opossums, squirrels and birds come for a drink. I agree that a skunk or coyote would alarm me, but I don't mind sharing water with the wild creatures. Maybe make some noise prior to stepping out after dark? I'm sure that they don't want to encounter a human either :-)

Stupid question #2:

If you use one variable speed pump, and divert to the water feature, this water is not run through the filter?
Why not?
Why not have the water always go through the filter - run slow if it returns via the pool - run fast if it returns through the water feature??

Water would still go through filter.
The more you run your waterfall, the less time you need to run the filter to clean water.

echo what justapb said (and nice meeting you the other day...haha).

I strongly prefer the VS intelliflo the more I use them. Simply put, you can have a high rpm to clean the pool if you have an infloor or similar system that requires a greater flow rate, a slower rpm to filter based on your required turnover, and still have 2 more speeds to program for your waterfeature(s). For instance, I have a VS on 4 deck jets. I can use the different speeds for different heights of my deck jets. This also works great for controlling noise levels of your waterfeatures and also spa jet pressure.
