pop-up drain with overflow on sink w/ NO overflow

I wanted to reuse an old Delta faucet with pop-up drain with overflow (holes) on a Lowe's cultured marble sink without overflow.

Can this be done, or would the overflow holes retain stagnant water down there? The holes would still be below the bottom of the sink bowl (i.e. above the rubber gasket), but the holes would be a bit above the gasket, leaving a place to catch and hold water, etc. I wonder if I should somehow A) cover the overflow holes so water doesn't get caught in the holes, or B) forget about using this faucet and get a new one (without overflow).

A plumber in the plumbing supply parking lot said "it would be fine", but I'm second-guessing that advice.

For sink drain fittings without the overflow feature, look at a mobile home supply place.

Hmmm. Don't think I've seen a place like that around metro washington DC, but I'll take a look.

I'm no expert but I would think that if you can get an overflow drain that will accommodate the thickness of the material it would be easy to add the overflow/drain setup to the stone. I know in the local tile shop they have a travertine carved tub but I don't know if there is an overflow or not. A plumber could probably make something for the overflow and drain, or add length to the overflow/drain fixture, or have it made. I made my own SS sink recently, but without an overflow, and set my own drain. I followed along with the Buck's County Soapstone video to draw up my plans (with a lot of stop and starting of the YouTube video). They used a Kohler sink drain that could give them the depth that is needed for the stone. But even still I needed to take material out around the drain to get the hole thin enough to accept what I think was a 3/4" thickness for the drain and nut. So that is what I used. Taking out material also allowed me to create a slope to the bottom for drainage. So slope might be something to consider. I don't know how much slope you would need for drainage - probably around 2% at the min.? I haven't done the length to figure out how much material that would remove if you did it with a flat bottom. You don't want to get it too thin at the drain end. Unless, you put the drain in the middle near the back long side then you could split the difference. BTW, My sink holds water too :)

Hi neesie, As far as I know, there is only one standard size bath drain. Sometimes these are referred to as 1 1/2", sometimes 1 3/4", etc. The confusion is sometimes due to the escutcion size rather than the size of the hole. I'm assuming the seller of the sink also sells drains? If not, then you simply need to go to a hardware store, pick out a drain you want and measure the size of the part that will be going through the hole in the bottom of the sink. I suspect that any size "standard" bath drain - whether vessel style of not - will work with your sink. One other comment, I don't believe there is a "pop up" style drain that will work for a vessel sink. There is an "umbrella" style that you manually push down once to close, and again to open. A "pop-up" style generally means that there is a mechanism behind the drain that will open and close the drain from your faucet. ...however, this is always for a sink that has an overflow from my experience. Yes - of course you can. Most of the high end showers we build use German, Italian, french and English hardware. The fittings you seek something you need to know how to find and ask for. Here is a secret. Don't walk into the store and say "Hey - I bought the meat and potatos all ready over seas but really need the $20.00 fitting you sell to make it work". Find out who sells the high end stuff - go ask the questions in store. here in Vancouver the goto shop is Cantu. They are bomb barded with people shopping at Ikea and not being able to hook stuff up. I have heard from multiple people that Ikea sends them to Cantu. And Cantu asks "Where did you buy it?" Round and round you go. Companys actually make Euro to North American adapters. Some companys design their pieces top be cut and once cut the remeainder is NA. So many versions. The School of Hard Knocks is your friend.

Since HD and Lowe's are selling all those "cultured marble" sinks with no overflow, does it stand to reason that overflow type drain can be used with them anyway, if only because that's what they sell and also because they seem to be equally thick at the bottom of the bowls?

Even if that's true, I wish the drain overflow holes wouldn't sit a bit higher than the space above the rubber gasket, so there would be no place for water and gunk to rest at the side of the drain (outside and just below the overflow holes).

I wonder if that space is the reason for smelly sink drains that folks complain about.

well, if the drain pipe has the overflow holes, but the sink does nto, then no more water will sit there than it does in a sink with overflow.

the problem i see is that if the overflow is sticking up then you cannot stop teh sink from draining at all.

Correct. But it also depends on the sink.

Anyway, here's the apparent solution. I went to 3 plumbing supplies today, and finally found a pop-up drain that has side overflow holes that are "square" and "low" enough. Turns out they all differ somewhat(some round, some higher, etc.). (Delta's holes are round and too high, for example)

The bottom edge of the side square holes seem to suitably line up with the bottom of the sink, which will be safely just above the rubber gasket/washer. Therefore, not much water or gunk to be caught and get skanky over time. The drain I found has a "K" on the brass and seems to be of solid professional quality.
