view from the porch...it was Hail ! do you have pics ???

Wow...we were luckier than many yesterday . The storms that devastated much of OK and AR were not as bad here. We did get an impressive blast of rain and hail. Here are a couple pics. The ground is littered this AM with green leaves and my roses....oh..they are so sad. Petals are all on the ground. Have a major cleanup this AM.

Anyone else with pics of the storm ???

DH was about 30 minutes from our home, meeting his brother at Costco (brother won't get his own membership to buy wine and cheese once a month) and took these four photos within a minute. He said the sky was constantly changing... then said "I should have taken a video." New phone and he's technically challenged anyway. Taken about 11am CST. Didn't really start storming (raining) until later. No hail or damage in our area - Costco or our house. It was rough near my sister's (DeSoto Caverns area).

milehighgirl: miraculously no damage to cars or structures, other than some exterior lights. Here in NM it seems hail is not uncommon anytime from Spring to Fall, but usually it's just pea-sized and short-lived. This was the worst I've seen. ltilton: I don't think they froze, since what's left of the vines is still green and not black. It was just being pelted with and buried by ice balls the size of grapes that did the damage I think. Fruitnut: Gardening sure can be cruel, I'm just glad that it's only a hobby for me.

I have my photos stored on Picasa web album, and here's how I upload my photos from Picasa to GW. 1 - I check that my albums are shared with "Limited, anyone with the link", if they're not Public; 2 - I open the photo that I want to upload; 3 - I look on the right side of the photo to locate "Link to this photo" and click on that; 4 - I high-light the codes in the box under "Embed image", then copy the codes; 5 - I return to my post on GW and paste the copied codes. I always got my photos appeared in my post on here. Hope that helps. By the way, I'd like to share photo of my two bulbs recently received from Royal colors. Xuan

McT--you are so right--I'm hoping others with post pics. of a favorite hosta-view from your windows!!! inlimbo--I am so sorry for the loss of your 'Molly'! We had a cat live 19 yrs. as well, and I know of a lady who owns a gift shop in Gatlinburg, who had a 29 yr. old cat, and a 22 yr. old one! It's so hard to lose a 'member of the family,' around that long, especially!! Do take the pics. to show us your progresses, as you mentioned doing--okay? billykathy--I am so glad you took the time to post on this thread the beautiful thoughts you have shared!! Your thoughts (not boring me at all) remind me of this: "Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow." :o) And 'Shade', yes, lots of birds--and I do want to jump up and look at my view which then draws me further out with my cup of coffee to thoroughly enjoy! And--where are your pics. Shade??? Lisa and andi--you just come on--what is 3 more dogs and 2 more cats added to 2 dogs and two cats---a ZOO!!! lol And, this household could handle another dh--especially if he likes to cook like mine seems to these days--better yet--if he likes to clean up after my dh cooks---perfection!!!LOL Phil--I love hidden gardens and from your pics., yours is worth looking to find!!!! smorz--you would not believe the beginnings of our place. This home was only 6yrs. old and the original owners rented it out for two of those years and NOTHING was done to the outside beyond the obligatory two baby 'Silver Maples' out front, along with some Taxus shrubs along the front porch and some Juniper shrubs along the front where the bedrooms are. There was a very sorry lawn in place in front and about 20 feet out the back with the rest nothing but weeds and rocks. I spent the first summer, pregnant, so not much was done but the following summer I spent whatever time I could get, with bucket, fork and spoon in hand combing down that remaining back of rocks and weed, pulling up the surface rocks. Eventually we attempted to seed a lawn. The lawn has never been robust, due to the lack of topsoil. I wish I had known more about such things then. We would have invested in bringing in some topsoil, several years worth, as we could have afforded it before trying to develop a lawn. The very next thing we did was plant two small Ash trees in the back, and another Silver Maple, because we knew it would grow faster. In about 8 years the Maple had grown so fast (because we had dug out an 48 ft. square hole, and backfilled it with good stuff before planting it) that the two main trunks split down the middle and the leaves were just HUGE for a S.M.! Sadly, we had to remove it, because it was just too damaged with the split, and we then replaced it with the Ash that is in alot of the pics. I have posted with a blue bird-bath beside it!! I did plant a few things around the back--some Forsythia here and there--and eventually other trees, raised beds across the middle of the top back, Peonies, etc. but (big BUT) it wasn't till about 8 years ago that we really began concentrating on landscaping, and the last 4 years, with hosta! There--the 39 yr. history of our outdoor development!!! Hangeth thou in there--it will be worth it!!!! Oh lisasmall---I had no idea you have an illness that is disabling you! I am SO very sorry to hear that!!! I am often discouraged as I feel I am getting to a place where it is just so VERY HARD for me to do the work--that it takes to fulfill my dreams, which are ever new--no big plan--ever! I feel I really am very near the end of any further 'BIG' projects. I have to take a couple of medications, which have added a lot of weight to my poor body (I hate that) and it just has really slowed me down. I often wonder how much worse it would be to do without the prescripts--but--hubby won't let me try going without them!! :o( I do hope you get your sunporch, lisa--I really, really do!! Oh---no teahouse--it's a playset for the grandkids, so they won't be in danger of falling into a hosta or someday--in danger of getting eaten up by one such as 'Komodo Dragon' when it matures! LOL Oh--I remember a question about the daylillies, but, unfortunately I'm not as obsessive about them or their names as I am about the hosta--but I do know that one is 'Happy Returns' a common yellow and a couple others are the 'Ever Bloomins' (?) or something like that! The one I love the most, I have no idea what it is called!!! LOL Thank you, EVERYONE for your kind thoughts and comments about my favorite 'inside-out' view of the hosta garden we have today! I really do feel very thankful for the way it has come along and despite some struggles here and there with nems. and now Southern Blight, I do love what I have and am very, very thankful for the views I have everyday!!! Definitely WORTH the effort, I feel!!!

We spent an eon agonizing over how to incorporate a computer into the kitchen -- the computer is where we get all of our recipes, all of our music, as well as all of our news/movies/info/entertainment. We came _this close_ to buying an i-mac and putting it on an articulating arm mounted to the side of the pantry (which is next to the prep area). Our thinking was that it could face someone seated at the island for t.v. or could be used for recipe sites in the prep area, while also being able to play music or podcasts over the in-ceiling speakers. In the end after visiting the Apple store and talking at length with an APple guy (who happens to be a lawyer by day and about to embark on his own kitchen renovation), with his help we went an altogether different route, although the new i-macs are beautiful, we realized that we'd rather search for recipies (and music, and everything else) on our individual laptops while seated in the living room and then carry the laptop into the kitchen as opposed to doing this while sitting or standing in the kitchen. By our way of thinking, the hours that the kitchen computer would get used would not be enough to justify buying a new computer for the job, and most of what we wanted it to do could be better done on a laptop (and I'd argue even better done on a brand spankin' new i-book, but so far no dice). Thus this is the route we chose instead: 1 - speakers installed in the kitchen ceiling (and living room ceiling too)and wired to the back of the pantry, we had our electrician put an outlet inside it 2 - a shelf installed in the pantry that holds the following: 2- powered amps (0ne for each set of speakers), and an Airport Express that my laptop (or any computer in the household) that allows me to opt to play through the in-ceiling speakers (I-tunes, or Pandora mostly, but could play anything the computer can get to). 3 - a slate lazy susan (ordered from Amazon) to hold a laptop on the island while cooking, the thought here is that it keeps it up out of spills, and also turns as the cook changes positions while cooking. 4 - as for the t.v., there are lots of small, high-res lcd t.v.'s at Sam's Club/Costco that would do the job and fit nicely in a small space for less than $300, it didn't seem to make sense to buy a dedicated computer to primarily be a t.v. (at 3x the cost of the t.v.). We don't actually watch t.v.(just Netflix, I-tunes t.v. shows and Hulu) so it hasn't been an issue, but if we did, say want t.v. going while in the kitchen, II think I'd buy an inexpensive one rather than buying another/dedicated computer to be a t.v. (though that could be done as well). 5 I'd till like to add a wireless keyboard and mouse tothe laptop because they're under $100, cute as a button and would allow me to not worry about having messy hands on the keyboard while cooking. Wow! What amazing photos! We get a huge amount of hail and of course hail damage in Austin and around the area. It's crazy how the weather can be so powerful.

Trail... I hope your home and cars did not get any hail damage!

So sorry about your roses etc and all the work involved with clean up. My biggest concern here in AR is something eating the buds on my clematis by my kitchen window!

Sorry about your roses, Caroline. We would have major clean up days at our last home (for 20 years). Always made me more sad when blooms were involved!

Whoa is right...scary pics! We all get something...earthquakes here. The safest place storm-wise,I always thought, is the east coast with mostly only hurricanes to worry about. They can be devastating but come with plenty of warning, unlike tornados and earthquakes.
Losing rose blossoms during the height of their flush is hard to take, I know.:>/

Oh, "hail!" I'm so sorry your lovely roses took such a beating. I know all too well that helpless feeling when those "bullets" start pelting from the sky. I have a love/hate relationship with springtime in Texas, because the weather can turn ominous so quickly. We had very high winds yesterday and I've just returned in from picking up twigs and leaves from the lawn, but that's nothing to complain about, really, in light of the devastation that others have suffered.

Allison, your photos are awe-inspiring!

If a cow can eat my rose bush down to the ground in the dead of winter and it comes back tripled in size in the summer, then your Roses will be fine. lol

Jen, we got those high winds also. The eastern half of OK has been getting all the rain. We're right in the middle of OK. But the western half of OK has been under a severe drought since January, even with two big blizzards.

But I don't know if I want it to rain if we're going to have tornadoes though. We do have a storm cellar.

From Thursday night until around 8pm last night we had wind gusts up to 60mph. The wind would just not stop! The cats wouldn't even go outside and play!

Oh, the scary, awe inspiring and sick feelings those bad storms churn up all at once. :/

trailrunner, hope your roses recover. I have had some tea roses not rebound so well with further bloom flushes, others no problem. Shrub, floribundas seem to fair better.

Allison, I've stood in our driveway and watched clouds like that just boil & roll and they move so fast. DH doesn't like I'm out there in it, but it's completely fascinating (till it hits the fan, anyway). Even if he's technologically challenged, your DH took some great pics!

These storms are getting more powerful, does anyone else see that? Have lived a huge part of my life in areas prone to tornadoes, and up until maybe 10 years ago I can recall having to seek shelter in the basement twice. Now it seems like we've been huddled in the lower level shower (tile over concrete block walls) at least 5 or 6 times in last ten years. Thankfully it's big and holds all my furbabies, too.

Great pictures! I'm in the north Dallas area and we got a lot of hail, too. My cover on the grill is ruined and I need to look at my grill and see how it is. My van also has some hail damage.

A friend told me she ran outside and covered her cars with blankets, I wish I had thought of that!

It's barefoot hot & sunny here...started on bricking walkway and front porch area (I see some color clusters to be fixed).

Wow that was really coming down Caroline.
Allison, those are awesome cloud formations your hubby captures.

We had hail here too but it was a week or so ago. The first photo is from hail my hubby, how arrived home about ten or fifteen minutes after the storm, brought in the house from the driveway near our daughters vehicle that got damaged. Had I known the hail was that big I'd have run out and brought it in the garage, but what I saw was on the other side of the house that looked as what's shown in the second picture.

WOW Allison those are amazing pics...and just...whoa that is HAIL !

We are fine here and no damage. Sun out and breezy and cooler than usual. I had to get on the roof and lightly sweep all the leaves and branches off. Slipped 2x and was creeped out. DH was yelling ...GET DOWN ! LoL. He is a pill. Took 2 hrs of sweeping and pinching buds and calming down the posies but all is good. They will benefit from the through shakedown I am sure. Unfortunately we have a dinner party tomorrow and I was all set to show off the blooms....that's what I get for being a show off :)

Oakley you are right they will be fine only blossoms not leaves were hurt. Some hydrangeas have torn leaves. Car and roof good .

I am so glad no one was injured. Thanks for all the good wishes ! c

This storm is going to be here within the hour. Already tornatoes in nearby cities, thousands without power and one death known so far. The only good thing is the air is cooling due to the late afternoon/evening hours which may calm the storms. Glad all here is ok. Trail, glad you and your beautiful porch are ok!

That hailstorm from last week was something else! It actually left a 4-5" diameter hole in the window above my kitchen sink. I'm surprised I didn't have more damage!

Wow, that is something else. I love huge rain storms. I'd love to sit on your porch and watch the rain, but that's pretty scary.

sf: a HOLE in your window ! wow...that is really scary.

prill: whenever we have a "po'e down " as DH calls it we both head for the po'ch. Do you notice the absent "r"? :) We love love love to sit out there and watch the rain and look at the lightning and feel the breeze and watch the candles flicker. Of course , it is only charming as long as no one is in danger. c

I was shocked when hubby brought that inside. It was in the mid seventies so it could have melted a bit before he got home too. When you think about it I was probably better off not going out in it to bring our daughter's vehicle inside. That size could do some damage to the human body too. I'm already loony enough I don't need hit in the head with hail to make me any worse off!

Carmin I hope all is well for you. I head about the storms on east coast and been praying for you all.

Wow Southern Frenchie, that is scary.

During the construction of our home there was a terrible hail storm. Hubby was hear working on the house. We lived about seventeen miles south of here and didn't get the hail so I had no clue until he called me and asked me to come out with the camera. By the time I let the animals out and headed up it was an hour after the storm had stopped and the hail was still quite large. I'll see if I can find some pictures later. Right now I really have to make myself cut out some WTs for my client since it looks like hubby's going to be home late enough that he'll be pretty tired. Too tired to help though I know he would if I asked. I won't though.
I did have this picture I took of some in my hand. It's blurry, but I took the pix myself of my own hand. Not an easy task. Remember this was an hour after the storm. Hubby said they much larger when he first came out.

Wow everyone! Hail, storms, etc. Glad everyone is ok. We have been lucky, just cold, rainy, windy, overall miserable weather. Only got up to around 40 today and had enough snow to turn the ground white. Was supposed to put mulch on the beds today, but forget that! I stayed inside by the pellet stove and was happy to be there.

We had a really bad storm on Monday morning, and have a bit of damage. 80 mph winds, heavy rain, but thankfully, no hail. We lost quite a few shingles, a tree, one of the porch posts blew out, part of the fence is down, and the mailbox was blown apart and ended up about a block away.

That wind was just amazing. I've been through many bad Texas spring storms, but I've never felt a house shake or make that kind of noise before. Still working on the cleanup and fixing of everything. The irony is that we still desperately need more rain.
