I love this thread, How about this one, I have a sign in my garden and it is wearing out wish I had another one. It say's, Free Weed's Pull your own, so cute it makes people laugh. always catches a eye, and we have one that say's God's signature written in flower's. I just love the one you see everywhere, Live well, laugh often and Love much. One says welcome God Sunshine and Flowers or could put friends. Love the quote's this thread made me chuckle.

I don't know if anyone in our area knows the names of cannas; we mostly got them from our grandmothers & our aunts, who told us, "That one's yellow, that's the red one", "I got that one from an old neighbor". I don't think there's a canna that *doesn't* grow well in your area; if you get one with very dark or very light leaves, you'll need to put it in a lightly shaded area; dark leaves wilt in our brutal sun, & light leaves sunburn. For a natural setting like around a pond,I'd post a "wanted" on freecycle ro craigslist or in my local shopper, offering to dig people's overcrowded cannas, & plant them all together. Just be sure to protect them as much as possible from strong winds. Best luck, & have fun!

Here is a picture of my Henry Apples Dupree, Roxanne... This is what Diana has listed in her notes.... Henry "Apples" Dupree large creamy yellow named for the plumeria collector who found it. Big clusters, long lasting yellow and white, sweetly fragrant. The tree is a prolific bloomer. Henry originally thought was the tree named for Iolani which was a prize tree lost to borers back in the early nineteen eighties. The tree habit balanced, the season long, the inflorescence huge and fragrance sweet rose. 3+Ã¢ÂÂ bloom of a light shade of gold. The flowers appear in heavy clusters and have a sweet fragrance with hints of apple. Creamy white petal with bright yellow color toward center, nice texture, large to 4", wide petals and slightly irregular, smell like a good mixed of apple and jasmine. Flowers have a slight green tinge. During WWII, When a submarine departs its berth on the west coast and heads for the war zone the torpedo tubes are empty and all the torpedoes are stored in the Submarine and are armed just before being placed in the tube. On their trip through friendly waters the needed supplies are stored in the empty torpedo tubes. Henry stored several crates of apples in one of the torpedo tubes to be used on the long voyage in his cooking. One day before they entered hostile waters the torpedo mate decided he needed to test the torpedo tube, forgot about HenryÃ¢ÂÂs apples, loaded the tube with a test air charge and fired it. All of HenryÃ¢ÂÂs apples were projected out in front of the submarine with a big bang. As the submarine plowed forward through the hundreds of apples, they were hitting the sides of the submarine and bouncing along its side for the length of the submarine. From that day forward in the USN Henry was known as Apples Dupree. Scent is similar to the green apples which is fresh, yet sweet with a mildly sharp edge. Have a wonderful night!!! Laura

I tend to have runs on authors. I'll enjoy one of their books, and then try to get hold of lots more hoping that they'll be as good. Unfortunatly they seldom are. A good example is Iain Banks. I read "The Crow road", and enjoyed it - I then got "Whit", which is wonderful. After that, "Complicity" - which is pretty gory, but compulsive reading. I then worked through the rest of his canon in search of anything as good - but the only other one that came close for me was "Espedair Street". The rest fail, for me, for various reasons - "Song of Stone" is vile. (McCarthy's "The Road" reminded me of this), "The Business" seemed rather pointless, "Canal Dreams" belongs in a airport deparure lounge and nowhere else. His celebrated first book "The Wasp Factory" I found OK, but none of his other books have the same charm I found in the first three that I read. But I still buy them when they come out, in the hope.... I've not read any of his science fiction (Iain M Banks), perhaps that's one for the "irrational avoid despite" thread. Wodehouse never fails to disappont. I've read just about all of them (that I can find - I'm still missing a handful of rarities), and most at least twice. As Wodehouse only really wrote about three basic plots, and tirelessly repackaged them with his wonderful use of language, it doesn't really matter if you've read them before. I use them to punctuate more serious reading - or get me back into the habit of reading when I have a "dry spell".

1. Shelby Foote--his three book series on the Civil War is a must read, and his novel Shiloh is great, also.

2. Douglas Southall Freeman--his biography of Robert E. Lee is a classic.

3. Agatha Christie--the woman could write!

Okay, so I'm an unreconstructed Southerner who enjoys mysteries . . . .

I don't know that I have actual "favorites" - it's more that I have a favorite at this moment *LOL* When I "discover" an author, I want to read everything they wrote.

I am a huge Agatha Christie fan too, but only her Miss Marple series, in the pre WWII area are my favorites but all of them after that period were great. I grew up reading them, my parents loved her novels. I need to check out Shelby Foote, obviously, I'm a deep southern girl who was transplanted 16 years ago and tend to get homesick at times.

I'm a blank right now, I've read some of these authors and loved them. I did like Anne Rice's "The Witching hour" and the ones that followed that very much, as I did some of her best vampire novels, starting with "Interview". But, some of them were pretty much terrible, too.

I also love some of the classics and go back to them like comfort food.

I will read anything by Jeffrey Deavor

John Sandford is a favorite

Nevada Barr and J A Jance are a must-read when a new one comes out in paperback

I have everything Dick Francis ever wrote..his descriptions are spot on (I even found one plagiarized, word for word, in a Robert Parker novel)

I will read a book a day if I allow myself to do so. Literally hundreds of books are donated yearly to the library, or Habitat, or whoever will take them.

I read her years ago, and her early books were by far the best. I haven't been able to stomach her for about the last 6 years.
