Dining Room Paint - Red Below Chair Rail
Comments (2)Quite a few people did Duron's Tobacco Road (Sherwin Williams has it in their computer) on top and Cottage Red below. If you do a search for Tobacco Road, you will see it. Not sure who posted it though, sorry....See MoreDining room: same dark paint above and below the chair rail?
Comments (18)For the most part, my furniture is casual and neutral. The room next to the dining room (but not visible from the dining room) is the family room and it will hold a brown leather Ethan Allen sectional, muted orange wingback-ish chairs, and a rug with muted green, brown, gold, and orange squares. However, the orange chairs are in storage and due to some issues we had with the storage unit, they may not come out in usable shape. So the rug and orange chairs might be replaced with any variety of items in any variety of colors. Regarding metallic paint - that's not really in keeping with our style preferences. DH wants the dining room to be a dark room but I agree with johnatemp that I won't want to walk by a cave all the time. DH also had the same suggestion as creekylis -- to have the wall under the chair rail painted with the white trim paint to give the illusion of wainscoting. And I'm open to that. The walls are flat so I think that would look okay. As Les917 suggested, I think we need a rug to lighten the room a bit. I've been going through magazines and catalogs in an attempt to find a great room I can mimic but haven't stumbled upon anything that I love. But I think that we'll have a good result if we use the trim below the chair rail, chocolate brown above the chair rail, a sparkly chandelier, mirrors and lamps to create some light, and a good rug, we should be okay. Thank you, everyone, for your advice! try_hard ......See MorePoll: Chair Rails & Paint Colours
Comments (11)i used to be an economist, so I will answer with the same definitive response I gave to most economic questions...it depends! My gf has a small DR with 8' ceilings and she painted the room with a darker color above the chair rail and a lighter color below. The room looks great, very cozy without being dark given the smaller windows in the room. The darker tone above allows for drama and the art and window treatments to pop without the entire room feeling so dark as the lower half is light. I've seen other rooms well done with the dark below and the light above. As teacats suggested, the chair will really pop if you put the same color above and below the rail. And as Bronwynsmom suggests, the tonal and texture approach of same color different finish lends a much more subtle yet effective treatment. So it depends... Go to houzz.com and search on chair rail...you'll see lots of fabulous rooms in all sorts of combos of paint and chair rail colors....See MorePainting above and below a chair rail
Comments (3)Is it still in style to paint above and below the chair rail two different colors? If you have a generous volume of space, then you might be able to get away with two colors. Most people don't which means two colors will do nothing but unnecessarily split the room so it's visually clumsy. And the rail itself is usually out of proportion and installed at the wrong height for the room. Two colors just emphasizes everything that's usually wrong with most chair rail installations. So, to answer the question, no, it's never in style if the proportions aren't right which means in most cases one color is the right answer....See MoreRudebekia
