toilet shut-off leaking, can't turn nut

After shutting off the water valve for the toilet to fix the toilet (successfully), water started pouring out of the valve stem area when I turned it back on. Luckily, the flow stopped when I shut the valve. I tried turning (tightening) the nut on the valve (as suggested on several "how-to" sites), but it wouldn't budge. Not wanting to risk breaking the whole thing, flooding the house, and having to turn off the house water supply, I decided not to force it (we have another toilet). Any ideas how to get it to turn without breaking, or thoughts on whether that would even help. Other ideas?
