copper repair in tile bed

homebound

I have a leaking 1/2" copper supply running through the tile floor from tub to the lavatory, and "possibly" embedded in thinset just a bit. This is arm's reach from the access panel, and seems to be a fitting. House is over 90 yrs old, and the bathroom was redone about 20 years ago.

Access from the high kitchen ceiling below appears more difficult than going into the tile floor, due to the fact that the copper is running above a plywood "shelf" between the joists.

So I'm going to pull up a tile, dig into the thinset base, and get to it. Leak seems to be fortunately centered on one of the 9" tiles adjacent to the tub.

Advice on this repair, as far as embedding the copper again (or not)? I was thinking of blanketing the repair with a piece of rubber (like a scrap piece of inner tube), and then filling with thinset. Thoughts?
