Panicing - granite installation issues

The fabricators are in my house right now installing my granite. I have white painted wood cabinets and when they removed the old laminate and installed the granite there is about a 1 - 1 1/2 inch strip of unpainted wood that can be seen under the granite. I guess that part was never painted because it was under the laminate. What should I do about this? If I get it touched up with paint will it look bad? Or should I put a wood trim strip and paint it the same color as the cabinets? I am so upset about this. I feel the trim will not lay flat and then it will look like I got some double granite edge going on with one being white wood!

They are saying our faucet may not open properly once installed so my DH has gone to home depot right now to get another one just incase. I am in panic mode. I thought it would all go smoothly. Any suggestions? Thanks!

lol, there w3as your mistake. you must prepare for everything to go wrong and then be happy with only a couple of problems surfacing. :)
do you have a picture? i'm not understand ( amybe it is just me :) ) where thsi unpainted strip is. you say it is under the granite, yet it must be very visible to be problematic.

Some light sanding to smooth where the paint ends and bare wood starts, then fresh paint to cover up the bare wood should look fine. Matching the 'white' is a challenge but if you can take something down to the paint place - a small door for example - they can usually do a good matching.

Then I really have a problem - panic while making decisions and panic over the outcome - LOL. I too agree, this is a good panic, like getting ready to go on stage and worrying if you'll mess up even though you've practiced to death. If you did even a minute bit of planning, it will be OK. If it doesn't look like your dream, it will still be OK. My kitchen looks A LOT better than my dream - so much so, that I'm having additional work done - removing cabinets, opening up spaces, etc. NOW I'm worried. But, it still looks great (I least my neighbors are jealous!!) So don't worry, you can still make some darn good-tasting lemonade with a bunch of lemons, and I'm sure you have more than lemmons to work with. Best Wishes!! gng

Kiwilee, I have the exact configuration....off white cabinets with a mocha glaze. I chose star beach granite which is more like your Key West than the other granite. My sink is a black silgranit and my faucet is an oil rubbed bronze which looks almost black. I would choose the key west....the other granite really does not go with the cabinets. You do want things to tie. I posted pictures of my sink, faucet, granite and a little bit of my cabs on threads that ask for back splashes for a good cause and the faucet thread. I wish I could figure again how I posted those pictures, and I would post you the same here...but alas I am electronically challenged. search luvmyhouse_2010 and maybe it will bring up my pics?

Pqsmom, I'm so happy you love your Buckingham! I can't wait for mine. I'm still not 100% at ease, but doing better. There have been a few snags (what a surprise since that never happens right?). For example in spite of asking the owner of the cabinet shop about 7 times if she was sure she had made the trash cabinet big enough since I thought the Rev A Shelf website saying the opening had to be 15" meant it needed a 16.5" cabinet, she repeatedly stated her specs said a 16" would be fine. Well, installer agreed with me since the trash didn't fit. Now they are going to have to re-cut that cabinet, adjust some stuff and re-order the door. They also sort of forgot to make the fridge cabinet or order the doors for it. Whoops. Anyway in spite of those and a couple other issues, they were still able to come out to template so at least the mistakes won't mean I have to wait even longer for my Buckingham - just as long as it takes to re-cut and install the messed up cabinets. I found the templating interesting since it sort of looked like two grown men doing a big arts and craft project, using plywood boards instead of toothpicks! But maybe that's just the renovation insanity setting in.

Granite Seam / Pattern Installation Issue

We just completed building our beach house and had much wringing of hands over granite seams. The funny thing is that when I packed up our old beach house for the move (which we didn't build), I noticed, for the first time, that our granite was seamed exactly as your picture above, at both corners (u-shaped kitchen). It gave me a good laugh as we've been in this house since 2009! Is your seam perfect. No. Will it matter at the end of the day. No. On the other hand, putting the seam in the center of the vanity is a big no no, IMO. I think I'd ask for a new counter there. It looks too long to do in one piece but they could have put the seam in a less conspicuous place.

Thanks. I'll take pics once these guys leave to give you a better idea. I still have the original builders paint (8 years old) so I can either use that or get it matched. The part under the island is not smooth because for some reason they had to put a wood piece under the granite to bring it to the same height as the perimeter counters - is there a way to paint over that and still make it look smooth? Anyway, will take pics later to make it clearer. Thanks for any help - knew I could count on you guys to make me feel better.

Did you get 2 cm or 3 cm granite? 2cm requires plywood underneath, 3 cm doesn't but with 2 cm they usually laminate the edge to cover over the plywood so it isn't visible.
