Duma Key by Stephen King?

I happened to check Amazon, this book isn't available till October! How did you get to read it? I didn't like Lisey's Story. I loved early Stephen King, The Shining, The Stand, Salem's Lot,etc. I may give up unless someone highly recommends one of his books to me.

Jannie, this book has been out for a few months, I got it at the library. I haven't read it yet.

I've been listening to this book on cd in the car.

I can't wait for the drive to and from work - LOL!

I didn't like Dreamcatcher either, but this book is more like the old Stephen King. I'm really enjoying it.

Next on my list is a cd of The Talisman.

I am a huge Stephen King fan. I haven't read Duma Key yet. You'll have to post to let us know what you think.

I agree with the comments about his more recent work. It seems to be lacking something....

I can reccomend the Dark Tower books. They are my absolute favorite. The first in the series is not the greatest. It is one of his earlier works. His writing style is not quite the same. But the books do get better as they go.

I'm reading it now, can't put it down! The old SK is back, IMHO The characters feel real, even if you know the plot isn't----well------:) I've always had difficulty explaining why I like his works. Not SciFi? Not supernatural? Not "cult" ? I guess for me its suspense? Why do you read him?

I bought it for a friend at work for her birthday. We trade books all the time but she hasn't read her's yet. She's on vacation now so maybe she'll finally read it and then let me borrow it-lol.

Oh Jan I don't know why I read King's books. The first one I ever read was Carrie in high school, then I had to read everything else! I guess it is the suspense because I do not like fantasy or sci-fi and I've read very little "horror" other than King (I've read a few by Koontz and 1 or 2 by John Saul).

I've read many of his books and short stories, and love many of them too. I'm not normally a big horror fan, with the exception of King, and so plenty of his stories are not horror at all.

I particularly love the film adaptations of "(Rita Hayworth and the) Shawshank Redemption" and The Body, re-titled "Stand by Me."

I don't feel compelled to read all of his books yet, though, 'cause I want to have lots to look forward to.

Did I leave out "Different Seasons"? It has four novella/short stories in it, two of which are on my favorites list.

Jannie -- if you haven't already, please go to the library, check out "Different Seasons" and read "Rita Hayworth and
the Shawshank Redemption." Then, please read "The Body."

That is some excellent storytelling, without the horror element. You won't need to invest money or much time in either and you'll see if you still like King (I would skip the other two stories)

"On Writing" is a very good handbook for writing skills. It includes a lot of autobiographical information, including Stephen King's first-person description of when he was run over by a car, and his struggle to recover from major injuries and his return to writing.

A newer story "The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon," was too upsetting for me. Well written, though.

The last one I read was "Lisey's Story" (Jannie gave it thumbs-down). Started slow, but about 1/3 of the way through I got so caught up in it I would hurry to grab it first thing when I came home from work, just to make sure Lisey was still okay, then read a bit more.

Jampack -- after your review, maybe I'll put Duma Key next on my list. From what you say it also has that effect, getting the reader caught up in the story.

I loved his early stuff, but then he seemed to get more and more gross.
Gerald's Game...I had to stop reading it and then I just quit his stuff.
Salem's Lot...that was the first one I read, I was so scared I made my kids sleep together so I could sleep in the other twin bed in their room.

I'm not a particular Steven King fan but I keep gravitating to his works too. The only one I've read to the end was "The Drawing of Three". I think it's part of the Dark Tower series. I bought it to read on a long coast to coast flight to CA, only because it was thick enough to last that long. I never could get in to it. After trying several times, the last time I picked it up, I started reading the last 20 or so pages (not sure why). It intrigued me so much that I started from the beginning and couldn't put it down. I bought a few others, but havn't finished them yet. I'll have to try again.
