Does granite as hearty as quartz for counters?
Comments (12)I slide stainless and stoneware across my quartz and haven't had any scratching. What will scratch it is using an abrasive on it like Scotchbrite pads and gritty cleansers. My fabricator told me they can easily polish out scratches on granite. Not so with quartz. On install they cleaned epoxy off my Caesarstone with Barkeeper's Friend, which is oxalic acid, and dulled an area. They wanted to try to polish it out and got training from Caesarstone, but after 2 1/2 hours of a two-man team working their way through different levels of polishing creams and buffing tools, it was still noticeable, so they replaced the countertop. But it was a good learning experience for them....See MoreRadon in Granite
Comments (27)When you know what you are buying you have a choice. I believe most of the granite is okay, but there has been a small percentage that is questionable. Ask yourself, what levels of radon and radiation are safe? Do you know how much uranium is in the slab of granite you are buying and/or where the hot spots are? If there are hot spots, can they be left out of the installation? What are you comfortable with? We found out about our granite after it was installed, it was not in our comfort zone, and we chose to remove it and replaced it with a different granite. I am sure there are people on this list who think they would have been willing to live with it, we weren't. Please respect our choice. Comments (2)There are a few granites that have been shown to release significant amounts of radon gas. Uranium is very common, and if there's enough of it in a particular granite, then you can get radon. Most granite does not. It's good to be aware, but you shouldn't worry about it too much. "Quartz" as in countertops refers to a man made material. There is a lot of crystalline quartz in the earth which is very durable, but crumbly. These quartz grains are bound with resin and formed into slabs, which are then polished down so that the actual rock is on the surface (rather than a layer of plastic). All of the makers use the same machinery. The main differences are in appearance, how far it's shipped, etc. The resin binder in quartz can yellow over time when exposed to a lot of direct sunlight. Both are durable and appropriate surfaces....See MoreTesting Granite for radiation and radon
Comments (1)You can do an initial test yourself, and if it comes out "positive" you'd want a pro to follow up. Check the threads on the link below for more. Here is a link that might be useful: link...See MoreGranite City Services
