Granite and radon & radiation . . .

I was pretty much decided on Quartz (cambria) for my counters, but I went counter browsing with a friend yesterday.

She suggested I look at a big slab of similar color granite to try an envision what a large amount of the surface might look at.

I really liked the glossy finish of the granite (much more so than I did the quartz).

The salesman asked me why I was leaning towards quartz and I said: 1) quartz doesn't need to be sealed each year, and 2) there are no radon or radiation issues.

He said: 1) they have a 10 year sealer, and 2) the radon and radiation issues are overblown.

I just googled granite and radiation and saw this news piece on CBS:

Questions:

1) Are granite slabs presently certified to be radiation free and radon free?

2) How do you go about ensuring your new counter isn't a health hazard?

3) Is a 10 year sealer for $500 a good deal?

Thanks,
Mike
