About the cat name.......

His paws look to me like he's wearing boxing gloves, so I'm considering naming him Rocky.

He's going to be a big boy, and blue eye or not, I think he needs a big-boy name. :-)

Waddya think?

You can't "discipline" a cat as you would a child. That's absurd. They don't think like humans do, nor do they reason like we do. To hit or abuse a cat, will create a very frightened animal that will be traumatized for the rest of its life. It will jump at its own shadow, and be constantly petrified in anticipation of the next beating. Why do that to an animal? People need to understand why cats defecate and urinate around the home when there is a perfectly clean litter box nearby. I have a cat, she's now 15 years old and she's been doing this on and off for the past 15 years. We've read up on this, done research, listened to dog/cat experts and none of their advice worked. I've "figured" this out on my own. Cats in the wild (lions, tigers, etc) "mark" territory using their feces and/or urine. When a domestic cat does the same thing inside its home, it's "marking". The question is: why does the cat mark? My best guess is, to help its owner "find it". Translation: I've found whenever me or my husband (or both of us) leave the home for extended periods of time, our cat will "mark" our home using both her feces and urine, usually on my husband's clothing, or a towel. In her little cat brain, she's leaving us a "scent" for us to find our way home. She doesn't like it when we leave the house, she would prefer we stay at home all the time, so we could pet her all the time, which is how she expects us to spend our time - petting her. In her mind, petting her comes above everything else. So when we're gone from home, she doesn't like that one little bit. And if we're gone long enough, she's figured we're "lost" and we need to find our way back home. So she "marks", using her urine, and/or her feces. Our cat has used both to "mark" for us. So would 'beating' her help? Would "discipline" help? As already mentioned, NO. You have to figure out animal psychology to understand just what makes them tick and what doesn't. Our latest way of handling our cat, is to lessen the amount of time petting her. It's hard for us, because we like to pet her, but this is a last resort for us. I'm sorely tempted to pet her, but I don't want her soiling our home. And rather than have her euthanized, we'd rather have her around a warm home with good food and clean water and live out her life. But with minimal petting, because the more we pet and spoil her, the more she soils our home. We'll see where this latest "theory" takes us. More later.

Thanks to you all for posting the pic for me! natal, Thanks! I had to postpone the vet appt to Tuesday. My dryer quit working and had to get it fixed that day. sable, I will definately ask the vet if it could possibly be asthma. She still does it a lot! Funny thing about her, I was ready for her to be a "talker" since she is a siamese mix, and she hardly talks! Maybe she will as she gets older? bestyears, she is doing great with my son! She still loves my DH the best though. My son wants to carry her around, when she would rather be sleeping, I think. He sometimes picks her up when she's in her little post (in the pic), asleep. tjerrilynn, that is the CUTEST thing I have ever seen! I love his (or her) haircut! marlene, thank you and I am glad to hear about the male and female cats together. I am going to seriously start looking for another one. betsyhac, your cats are so pretty and full-figured-LOL! June is on the skinny side now, and I'm guessing she will be until she gets out of the kitten stage. I wonder what she will look like when she's all mature! She plays with us a lot now, and is very curious. She loves to lay on her back and let us rub her belly until she falls asleep, so cute! I got a hooded kitty litter box and she likes it, thank goodness! It has been much easier to keep clean around the box now. I put one of those rubber (I think) kind of pads down in front of her box as she walks out and it has made such a difference, plus the hood on the box. She has Softpaws on her nails right now, baby blue to match her eyes! We just love her!

I had a problem with a cat using the corner of the living room for a litter box. After replacing the carpet and installing hardwood, I thought the problem was solved. But no. I heard some scratching noise on the hardwood and went to investigate and found a rather unpleasant pile. What I found to solve the problem is called SSSCat. It is about the size of a hairspray can and the top contains a motion sensor. When the cat walks by it blasts a spray of air. I put one in each of the 2 corners the offenses were occurring. One blast was all it took. That cat will not set foot in the room again. you can use it on counters, furniture, rooms you want to keep the cat out of. I wish I knew about this when I still had some nice Christmas ornaments :( Here is the product description: Product Description Scat the gentle way to protect off-limit areas. Stop cats from roaming freely throughout the house. This unique spray deterrent system uses an adjustable motion sensor to detect a cat's movement within three feet of a designated area. Once the cat has been identified, the system is capable of delivering either an audible warning or combining tone and a burst of compressed air. Package includes motion sensor device, adjustable spray nozzle, compressed air spray and instruction guide. You can buy it online at Petco or Amazon. I wish I had known about this years ago !!!!!

Question about wounded 15-year-old cat
Q

The wound has been getting worse instead of better. On Saturday, I noticed that it smelled bad, and I called the vet. They told me to come in on Monday (today). As I'd feared, the infection is bad. The vet thought it smelled "almost like gangrene." The focus now is on saving his leg, although I donÂt think IÂd consider amputation to be an option at his age (15). We went through that with a dog years ago. It was quite an ordeal for her, but she was a lot younger. And we had a lot more money then. The vet gave him fluids under his skin and a DMSO treatment. She gave him two shots of antibiotics (two kinds), plus a steroid. I have to soak his leg with warm water and Epsom salts, for 15 minutes, four times a day. Then I have to squirt DMSO on the wound. I have to keep the bathroom floor mopped, and change his bed every day. And give him a liquid antibiotic twice a day. So far I did one of the soaks. Mickey tried to lunge out of the sink a few times, but mostly he didn't fight. I was hoping he could just stand in the water, but he had to sit. I had to bend over, and it was harder on my back that I'd anticipated. Afterward, his towel and my apron went right into the washing machine. All I can say is IÂm glad IÂm off work all week, and IÂm glad I hadn't planned to prepare and serve a Thanksgiving dinner. Let's hope and pray this works. Since you said the wound was healing at the time you discovered it, why is a collar now needed? Good question. The wound looked much better when I first brought him in a week ago. Today the vet took his collar off and said maybe he can get some of the infection out by licking. Then she changed her mind and said cats' mouths are filthy and their tongues like sandpaper, so they can do a lot of damage. So she put the collar back on. I pointed out that he must have been licking it before I discovered it, and it looked not bad a week ago, but she said it looked much bigger than it should have because of licking. What are you opinions on licking?

I like it! I think it fits him.

When I name an animal, I usually look at it and the first name that comes to mind is what I name it. Favio, the kitten.....I will keep his name Favio, but when I looked at him a day or so later. I thought "Emmet." Don't know why. I had a little donkey that someone brought me in the middle of the night one night....almost starved to death. My FB friends thought I should name her Hope....and I did, but in my mind, I always called her Rags. (Unfortunately, after six weeks of trying to save her, she died.)

I love "Rocky", suits him very well. Of course, if you are anything like me, the name will devolve into cutesy nicknames anyway and soon you'll have to think hard to remember his "given" name. :o)

Rocky is a great name! When he's naughty you can call him by his full name 'Rocky Balboa'. lol

Is your granddaughter feeling better about her friend not getting him?

We'll since you're going with a boxing theme and he's yellow/orange ... you can tell everyone that he's a "golden gloves" boxer. :-)

Good one, Jodi!

And I like the full-name-when-naughty, Lydia. As for my granddaughter, I hope so. We emailed about something else recently, but the big subject didn't come up. I heard from someone else that the friend applied to adopt a cat. Good girl!

"Rocky--the paws--Balboa"

I like it!

My son's cat is Murphy Patrick O'Brien. Not my last name. He's so rotten he gets all three names called, often!

Like Petra, our cat names change to silly things over time. I initially give them regular names so I'm not embarrassed at the vet's. I can say, here is Eloise instead of "here comes monkey dog!" Rocky is a great name for your boy.

Everyone of my 15 cats and dogs except one were/ are named people names. The only exception was Pumpkin, an orange cat I got on Halloween. Hated that name though thru the years. I like two syllable names ending with y or ie. So much easier to call and think how often you call them over the years. Current ones are Nellie, Annie, Phoebe, Henry, Ziggy and Wally ,but I have had Lily, Louie, Maddie, Simon, Casey, Emma, Minnie, Ruby.

.Rockey should work well for your cat.

Rocky is purr-fect. (sorry). And Rocky also links itself to another 'real' heavyweight champ Rocky Marciano.

Just watch our for more cats in the future - there were 5 sequels to the Rocky movie!

Sounds like he is happy with the decision, too.
