My rose was only a couple of years old and at the time about waist high. You might be okay on a big old rambler. I dug up some of the root of Polish Spirit and planted it with an ornamental wire climbing structure well away from any rose. That was the last time I saw the structure. The clematis completely swallowed it. It is happy there and wishes the structure were larger. I do too; I get tired of whacking back the clematis. You know about three types of clematis, and how you should prune them at certain times? PC is group 3, blooms on new growth, and should be hard-pruned in spring. I was just reading that unpruned it will grow to 20 feet. I believe it. Pruned you can maintain it at 8-12 feet. Apparently it is the house-eater of the clematis family. On the other hand, Polish Spirit is very pretty, and eager, hardy, healthy plant. After all, it is a viticella. As long as you keep it away from your roses, an excellent choice. I would be sorry to be without it in my garden. Polish Spirit, leafing out after pruning I whacked off lots and lots (and lots) extra growth this fall. It needs to be taken down more, which I will do in spring at the proper time. There is straw waiting to be used as mulch on a nearby vegetable bed, but what looks like straw at the bottom of the wire structure is the bare stems of the plant. You can see a bit of a gallica rose on the left, and a bit of the multiflora rambler Violette on the right, giving you an idea of what I consider a save distance for this plant. Rosefolly

ginny, how sweet! lovely to see your typing as well. claire, you must be really fun to eat ice cream with. yeah! that's the spirit! economy, schmeconomy. if i'm going down the tubes, i'm dragging a whole mess of plants with me, dang it. here is my own personal rationalization for yesterday's profligate PDN spending spree: i allow myself around $200 a year for plants & grow everything else from seed. (ok, i admit, i never skimp on seed-buying, but there you go.) though there was over $800 worth of pure floral awesomeness brimming from the cart at one point (don't you just love playing with the PDN catalog?) i bravely(!) whittled the final order down to 2 of the least-wildly-expensive cypripedium + 2 admittedly fancy-ass hellebore ... and c'mon! extra points should be given for waiting for a sale. yep. that's my rationalization and i'm sticking to it. nope. nothing weak about it at all. ;0) i'm so excited. Here is a link that might be useful:

Builder Prices Versus On-Line Prices For 'Stuff'
Q

we wern't impressed by our builder "discounts". I would definately shop around. In some cases we went with the builder supplier (e.g. lighting, cabinets) but in other cases we found a better local supplier and now the builder has switched over to them (e.g.granite). In some cases we purchased items on line and gave them to the builder (e.g. sinks). In the case of the lighting, we did not get the absolute best price on the fixtures (although the prices were good and dicounted off suggested retail) BUT we did get a "free" design and that was well worth the small premium on the fixtures. We could have saved a few dollars by puchasing the same lights on-line but we did have some broken fixtures on delivery (replaced quickly) and the lighting in our house is fantastic. There is something to be said for having a local supplier who can quickly get you parts or replace an item if there are problems. But you have to weigh that against what you are getting locally and any savings you can get on line. For example, we purchased our faucets locally using the builder's plumbing supplier but we bought the stainless steel sinks on line. The markup on SS was unbelievable (2 grand for a Kohler kitchen sink with the "discount" - are they nuts!). I think we paid 1 grand for 4 SS sinks - 16 gauage - they are awesome and we got that tip from GW. So Scrutinize every line item and do not assume that every item on the list is at the best discount you can get. Toilets were another one - we bought Toto's on-line and got a very good deal. The appliance purchase was amazing. Builder told us that his guy had the very best prices. BS - we saved over 4 grand by buying appliances from a local store who has been around for decades and their price included installation!. Plus we got 0% financing on the stuff which we just finished paying off - nice to have that off the mortgage. I don't think I would buy appliances on-line - research that approach and definately don't be affraid to check local stores and tell them the best prices you can get on line - see if they will at least match it or throw in installation. Shop til you drop. Its your money that they want to take. PS - assume that EVERY builder "allowance" is crap - pulled out of the air. Validate every allowance against actual bids from suppliers for items that are at the quality level you expect. Hopefully you can do this before you sign the contract. If we had only budgeted what our builder "allowed", we would have no lights and probably have plywood for countertops.

Ravencajun, I would like some advice if you don't mind. My sister needs to replace her old desktop computer. She is thinking she would like a laptop. She needs something basic and simple. Her vision is very poor and her hands are very crippled. All she needs or wants to do is email, facebook, her online banking and some shopping. Would you have any comments or suggestions of what I should think about and look for? We would appreciate any help.

I see the privo shoe by Clarks that I paid about 60.00 for (on sale) for 39.99. Hate that! But if you want great prices on shoes and boots check out 6pm.com. Both DH and I buy shoes and boots from them, some drastically reduced. He is really into Keen's, which are pricey. Has recently gotten some great deals. I just bought a 350.00 pair of Frye boots for 98.00 just today. These are on the clearance part of the website.

I did! I found several pair of summer shoes that interested me, but they weren't available in my size. Size 9 must be popular. I'm sure I'll revisit the site.

Last week a friend told me about a sale that Sierra Trading Post was offering. It was the last day to get free shipping on orders over $100 and an extra 20% certain sale items. She had a bunch of stuff lined up to order, and wanted to know if I had anything to add to it. I'd been wanting to try Acorn shoes, and found a pair of sneakers I liked. They're called Earthroamers, I think. Originally $88, and with all the discounts I ended up paying $26. I just got them, and they're very comfy!

Hubby ordered a bunch of stuff from them, too. He got some really good deals. He got in on that sale, too. Their shipping was really fast, too. I want to say something like 2 days? Now is the time to order winter boots and such, if you have room to store them. Some incredible deals. The thing I like about 6PM is you can get the current season's stuff for really good deals. I have bought Born and Clarks sandals for the summer, during the spring, for really good prices, way better than at the department store.

Okay, I just ordered a pair of Tretorn Rain Boots. Free shipping, and the price is probably lower than Walmart charges for whatever rain boots they sell. Thanks again, Sleeperblues!

PS: My son stopped in while I was ordering. I'm not sure what he intended to do while he was here, but when I told him about 6pm.com and he looked at my monitor and saw the price of the boots and the free shipping, he turned around and left. He said he was going to go check out the site. LOL

I went and looked in my closet at the shoes and told myself that really, Susan, you don't need another pair of Clarks. So I didn't order. But I might just take a tiny peek at the Earthroamers. Sale is probably over, but it's good to know about comfy shoes.
