allison0704 -- River Bottom Pine?
Comments (2)Thank you, Jeff, I did not use River Bottom Pine, but have seen their ads and the floors in Siebels. I had talked to the Siebels owner about them, but decided against pine flooring. Went with #2 grade oak, stained walnut and finished with Minwax tung oil. The island is antique pine that was ordered thru Roy Lumber in Bessemer. Cedar beams and T&G spruce came from Cole-Hall in Pelham. Good luck with your build....See MoreAllison0704- Dark wood floors with wood trim
Comments (6)Hi nostalgicfarm. Our floors are #2 grade oak. I wanted a lot of knots, but the dang installers cut most of them out! They are stained Dark Walnut (I think) and finished with tung oil. The trim is pine stained Sherwin Williams Walnut Wainscot. We currently have five inside pets; three cats and two dogs (54lbs and 10lbs). The floors have held up great. No scratches. Easy to clean. Most of the house is painted a warm white (looks much brighter in photographs) so it balances the wood doors, flooring, windows and beams. My youngest daughter has Anderson Hickory Forge in Ringing Anvil. She has four dogs, two cats, one 2yo. It is gorgeous and since it is literally hand scraped (not machine) there's no pattern. It has held up better than I imagined. The few places I've seen have been in the grooves (vacuum wheels?), and she just goes over with a felt tip staining pin, followed by paper towel to wipe up any extra. Here's a link to her MBR redo so you can see hers. Here is a link that might be useful: MBR Redo...See MoreAllison0704?
Comments (3)Thanks. I have a few on Photobucket. I'll leave large so you can see the flooring better. It's #2 grade oak. Stained with Minwax Wood Finish in Dark Walnut. Three coats of Tung Oil to finish. I didn't want it shiny and the tung oil is great. If the dog scratches when running, I just touch up with a tad of tung oil on a paper towel. We've been in the house going on four years and I've only touched up three times....See MoreMedium Brown Minwax stain on red oak floors.
Comments (9)With Red Oak you want to ensure you work with a colour that tones down the "salmon" colour. To 'kill' red, you need green undertones. Jacobean has green undertones. And the next thing you want to work with is a WATER BASED polyurethane. The oil based or oil modified products "amber" or turn yellow or orange ALL BY THEMSELVES. Just make sure the finish you plan on using is compatible with Minwax oil based stains. Too many times we have seen failures due to chemicals being mixed = ruined floor....See Morejuddgirl2
