My boxer throws up

My 2 year old boxer throws up a lot. Heaves is more like it. It is usually when her tummy is empty and there is mostly phlegm (sp?). I also suspect that she eats grass then throws up and have been told dogs do this on purpose when their tummy is upset.

She is 2 and does not eat very much, only weighs about 45.

Is there some sort of disease that this is a symptom of or is this common for dogs/boxers?

Well our boxer-pit mix, tends to 'hack' alot. Alittle foam or water will come up. If he eats too fast, it's coming back up. If he drinks too much water, it's coming back up.

Though he tends to 'hack' more than anything, and has apparently always done this since he was first around. I don't know if it's a boxer specific thing, or a big dog thing in general. He's healthy.

It always seems to me like he's got something stuck in his throat. It happens most when he's super excited and roughhousing, mostly.

My beagle, as well as quite a few dogs on this forum, throw up yellow bile if they haven't eaten in a while.

If this is new behaviour, or really concerning you, it's always good to check with your vet.

There are lots of reasons why a dog may vomit. If your dog is vomiting more than once a week, seems under weight or seems to have problems eating and drinking properly, I would take him to the vet.

I can help with some. Its not the species that will be scratch resistant, its the finish. The species will help hide any boo boos. Too many people put too much emphasis on the hardness of the wood and then are dissapointed to see scratches etc. Your walking on the finish not the wood. Oak is generally used as the benchmark for durability. If you had a throw rug in front of the washer that would solve the bleach problem but even assuming the worst, a board replacment is pretty inexpensive when using factory finished. I'm thinking slate isn't very level and is prone to breakage so I don't believe it would be a suitable subfloor. When you do this splurge for new washing machine hoses just to be on the safe side.

I have an 8 year old Boxer, Millie, that had her first seizure just over a year ago. It was long and violent and tortuous to watch lasting well over 3 minutes. I immediately took her to the vet and he started her on Phenobarbital and Valium. She had several more smaller ones until the levels were where they needed to be. In the year since she's had dozens, some worse than others, and we've added Potassium Bromide to the mix. She continues to have small focal seizures lasting a few seconds almost daily. She was hospitalized last month with Pancreatitis. While there she had one larger and one smaller seizure. Since she's come home she seems to be deteriorating. She sleeps most of the days away. She has difficulty walking, stumbles or falls when she stands still for more than a few seconds, bumps into things and has fallen down the stairs. She seems to be losing control or strength in her hind legs. Last night she fell asleep at my feet and then couldn't stand or walk for a couple of minutes when she woke. This morning, on the other hand, she came as close to running as she has in a while to go outside and potty and play for a moment. It was brief. She's eating well, looks and sounds a good as ever which makes it that much harder to wonder "How much is enough for her?" I guess that's what I'm looking for, advice on "enough". She is our absolute favorite person in the world and is loved beyond measure. As terrified as I am about her leaving us, I am more afraid that she's suffering as she is. I've never had to even consider this for a pet so I'm lost to the rationale of it. How do you know when they've had enough?

Here's my potty-training hint cut-and-paste: 1) Don't give the puppy the run of the house. When you are home, keep the dog leashed to you or in a crate. 2) Feed and go potty on a schedule - don't do free-feeding - at least for now while he's still being trained. This will help put his body on a potty schedule too. Then take him out at the same times each day. (And since he's so young, after playtimes and naps as well). 3) Choose one spot specifically for "potty". When you take him out, at the door say "Let's go potty." Take him to the same spot immediately on taking him out. Go to the spot and use a catch-phrase command like "go potty" repetitively. Do not let him out of the spot. Don't go for a walk. Walk him around and around the spot and tell him "go potty". 4) When he does go potty - praise him loudly, immediately and very excitedly - "GOOD POTTY!" and if he has a treat he goes nuts over, throw him a small treat. This has to happen immediately after he potties. 5) If he doesn't potty, bring him inside, keep him leashed to you, then try again in 5 minutes. 6) Only AFTER he potties, he can go for a walk and smell his favorite "pee-mail" spots, etc. Going for a walk should be a different activity than going out for potty. He will learn the difference eventually. Accidents may still happen but they will get fewer and farther between. Good luck! ------------------------------------------ Crate training should be fast if you are doing it methodically. It will take longer if you stray from the rules. Depending on the pup, after a week or two you can let him loose in one room of the house at a time, under your supervision. When he has not had an accident for a few weeks, you can try the run of the house, but when you are not there continue to confine him to one room.

My previous cat had a similar problem. It is possible your cat may be sick so you should take her to the vet just to be safe. However, it could be an issue that your cat is eating her food too quickly and it's too much at once so they throw it up. My previous cat suffered from this for a long time. There are several ways to tackle this problem. First, you could give the cat only a little bit of food at a time. Give a little. Wait 10 minutes. Give a little more, repeat process until all the food given. This is a simple method, but I also realize some people are busy and don't have 30 minutes to feed / wait / feed wait. Second, (and this may sound a little weird and it ONLY for dry food, not wet) but put large SMOOTH stones in the food bowl. The purpose of doing this is that it takes the cat longer to pick out the food bits around the stones / crevices. It basically forces the cat to eat more slowly. Third, you could give your cat only wet food. This method worked very well for a friend of mine who also had a cat who threw up all the time because he ate too quickly. In general cats take longer to eat wet food. Anyhow, I understand the frustrations of cats throwing up all the time. It gets a little annoying cleaning it up constantly. Good luck!

How often do you feed her? I think it was mentioned in the other threads, but dogs that do this usually do better on 2-3 meals a day vs 1 large feeding.

Diet should also be examined as a culprit!

Since your dogs throwing up seems to be a regular problem and you say it sounds like your dog is trying to clear its throat take your dog to the vet, it is possible there is a weed seed stuck in there. As far as feeding goes, feed your dog less food more often. A couple of cups max 3 to 4 times a day. Your dog is a boxer, which means it has a deep chest, these dogs can be more suseptible to having their intestines turn on them after eating a heavy meal. Which is another reason to feed your dog smaller meals more frequently. Be mindful about not running your dog or having him play hard immediately after eating, this will help your dogs chances of not having his intesines turn on him. But I would absolutely have his throat checked - there may be something lodged in there which needs removal

I have a 8 yr old boxer. He ate and threw that up and it smelled foul, it looked like dog food. Then during the nite he puked 3 times and one time it was yellow, the other times it was white.
